聞如是：
Thus have I heard:
一時，佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。佛告比丘：「人有四輩。有人自護身不護他人身，有人護他人身不自護身，有人亦不自護亦不護他人，有人亦自護亦護他人。是人不自護亦不護他人，是最下賤人；護他人不自護是勝上；若人自護不護他人是勝上；若自護亦護他是勝上。若如是人最第一。」
Once, the Buddha was staying at the Jeta Grove in the Kingdom of Shravasti. He said to the monks: "There are four kinds of people in this world.
Some people protect only themselves, but not others. Some people protect only others, but not themselves. Some people protect neither themselves nor others. Some people protect both themselves and others.
Those who protect neither themselves nor others are the lowest kind of people. Those who protect others but not themselves are better. Those who protect themselves but not others are also better. But those who protect both themselves and others are the best of all."
佛說如是。
Thus spoke the Buddha.
