Thus have I heard:
Once, the Buddha was staying in the kingdom of Śrāvastī, at the Jeta Grove in Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park. The Buddha then addressed the monks: “There are four kinds of ‘dwellings.’ What are the four? The first is the dwelling of relinquishment. The second is the dwelling of guarding. The third is the dwelling of protection. The fourth is the dwelling of cultivation.
“What is the dwelling of relinquishment? When a thought arises, you do not grasp it, do not cling to it, and let it go, keeping a clear distance. If anger or deceit arises, you do not cling to it, let it go, and keep a clear distance. This is called the dwelling of relinquishment.
“What is the dwelling of guarding? When the eye sees a form, you do not seize upon its appearance or details. If, due to conditions, something ugly arises, if something foolish arises, if something unpleasant arises, if a harmful or corrupt intention arises — you immediately guard yourself and cultivate virtue. You guard the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. You do not seize upon appearances, as described above. This is called the dwelling of guarding.
“What is the dwelling of protection? Here, a monk, when an impure appearance has already arisen — whether it be a bloated reddish corpse, a corpse half-eaten by foxes and dogs, a corpse flowing with red blood, a black-green decayed corpse, a white-bleached skeleton, or a skull — you closely and repeatedly observe it. You carefully protect your mind so that it does not lose this wholesome perception. This is called the dwelling of protection.
“What is the dwelling of cultivation? Here, a monk, because the mind has separated from conditioned patterns, because it distinguishes things differently, because it is far from clinging — having arrived at this point, you contemplate the nature of the mind. This is called the dwelling of cultivation.”
Then, after this teaching, it was summarized in verse.
