Sutra on the Fragrance of Precepts Spoken by the Buddha Translated by the Dharma Master Faxian of the Song Dynasty Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove of Anāthapiṇḍada’s park in Śrāvastī, together with a great assembly of twelve hundred and fifty bhikṣus. At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the bhikṣus: “There are fragrant grasses and fragrant trees in the world, whose scents can be smelled only when the wind blows. Even so, there is a fragrance that does not rely on the wind, yet its virtue pervades everywhere. What is this fragrance? If there is a disciple who upholds the pure precepts, accomplishes all wholesome dharmas, possesses right view, understands profound meaning, and delights in the true Dharma—such a person, even before speaking, is fragrant in body and mind. His virtue and fragrance pervade the ten directions, and all who encounter it rejoice and revere him. This is called the fragrance of precepts. “Furthermore, there are worldly fragrances: the fragrance of sandalwood, the

Thus I have heard:

At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika’s Park in the country of Shravasti, together with a large community of monks. At that time, the venerable Ananda came to where the Buddha was. He bowed his head to the Buddha’s feet, joined his palms, and respectfully addressed him: “World-Honored One, I have a small question I would like to ask. Please, World-Honored One, explain it for me. I see that in the world there are three kinds of fragrance: root fragrance, flower fragrance, and seed fragrance. These three fragrances spread everywhere. They can be smelled when the wind blows, and also when there is no wind. How is it that these fragrances work in this way?”

At that time, the World-Honored One said to the venerable Ananda, “Do not claim that these three kinds of incense can be smelled everywhere—whether the wind is blowing or not. Actually, even with wind or without, these three kinds of incense cannot be smelled everywhere. Ananda, if you wish to hear about the incense that pervades all places, listen carefully, and I will explain it to you.”

Ananda said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, I am eager to hear. Please explain."
