> Chapter 28

復次，凡愚之人若有輕毀於彼賢人，賢人終不生於瞋恚，得他毀罵生隨順語。

> Furthermore, when foolish people insult or defame a virtuous person, that virtuous person never becomes angry. Instead, they respond with kind words in return.

我昔曾聞，有一人於其家中施設客會，多作花鬘以與眾會，眾人得鬘皆戴頂上。有一賢者極為貧悴，詣客會中，次得花鬘不著頭上以置傍邊。眾人皆言：「此人貧窮欲賣此鬘，是以不著。」時優婆塞聞是語已，答言：「實爾。我若賣時，極得貴價，然後當與。」即說偈言：

> I once heard a story about a man who hosted a gathering at his home. He made many flower garlands to give to the guests, and everyone who received one placed it on their head. A certain virtuous man, who was very poor, arrived at the gathering. When his turn came to receive a garland, he did not put it on his head but set it aside. Everyone said, "This man is poor and wants to sell this garland, which is why he isn't wearing it." When the lay disciple heard these words, he replied, "It is indeed so. If I were to sell it, I would get a very good price. Only then would I part with it." He then spoke this verse:

「如昔日須鬘，本曾賣一花，九十一劫中，天上受快樂，今日最後身，得於涅槃樂。如似放牛女，以臭惡草花，眾人所不喜，女人賣此花，得生忉利天。如彼女所賣，我今欲向佛，亦欲賣此花，能發如是心，希有極難值。如此賣花者，三界中無比。」

> In a past life, a man named Sumana once sold a single flower. For ninety-one world-ages, he experienced heavenly joy and happiness. And in his final life, he attained the ultimate bliss of liberation. Consider also the cowherd girl who sold ugly, foul-smelling flowers— Flowers that delighted no one, yet she sold them. Because of this, she was reborn in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. Just as that woman sold her flowers, I too now wish to offer this flower to the Buddha. To bring forth such a mind—this is the most precious and priceless thing. Among all beings in the three realms, no one surpasses this humble flower-seller.

爾時諸人問優婆塞：「誰能少施獲大福報？」時優婆塞語眾人言：「今當為汝說善堅法。花鬘萎乾便即棄捨，佛捨王位如棄萎花。」即說偈言：

> At that time, the people asked the layman, "Who can make a small offering and receive great blessings?" The layman said to the crowd, "Now I will explain to you the teaching of unwavering virtue. A withered flower garland is cast aside without hesitation; the Buddha abandoned kingship just like casting aside a withered flower." He then spoke these verses:

「佛捨轉輪位，如棄萎花鬘，七覺嚴其心，清淨無垢穢。莊嚴悉已備，安用是花為？但我專精心，以鬘施佛塔。今我賣上佛，世間無倫疋，如是法商主，終無貧窮時。此賣最為勝，名稱有功德，我今持此花，欲以供養塔。」

> "The Buddha rejected the throne of a world-turning king, Like one casting aside a wilted flower garland. His heart adorned with the seven factors of enlightenment, Pure and stainless, free from any taint. All adornments of royalty were now complete for him, Why would he need such flowers as these? But with single-minded devotion, I offer this garland to the Buddha's stupa. Now I sell to the highest Buddha—incomparable in all the world— To this true master of the Dharma, there is never poverty. This sale is most excellent, bringing fame and merit; I now take these flowers to offer at the stupa."
