Chapter 1: Seeking the Mind
Ananda initially relied on the mind that delighted in appearances and cherished attachments as the basis for renouncing the body and seeking the Way. Since the very ground of his intention was already not true, it was only natural that demonic states appeared before him, and he could not free himself. All of this arose from deluded thoughts of attachment, quietly growing and spreading in the hidden recesses of the mind, causing you to mistake your perceptions and thoughts for the source of your troubles. The Buddha, wishing to encourage Ananda, led him to directly investigate the mind and the eye. Ananda reflected again and again, yet ultimately mistook the conscious awareness for his true nature. The Buddha then broke through this assumption step by step, showing that this mind, which seems to perceive and know, is all illusory and is not the true mind. This marks the beginning of this scripture's teaching—first investigating the mind, as the primary concern.
