The Śūraṅgama Sūtra, Volume Two<note>Also known as the Nālandā Mahā Monastery Sū
Translated by the Tang Dynasty Indian Monk Paramiti
At that time, Ananda and the great assembly, having heard the Buddha's instruction, felt peace and ease in body and mind. They reflected on how, since beginningless time, they had lost their original mind, mistakenly clinging to the fleeting phenomena of sensory objects and conceptual discriminations. Now, having awakened to this truth, they felt like a child who had lost its mother suddenly finding her again. With palms joined, they bowed to the Buddha, wishing to hear the Tathagata reveal the true and false, the empty and real, of body and mind, and to clarify the dual natures—the arising and ceasing, and the non-arising and non-ceasing—present before them.
King Prasenajit rose and addressed the Buddha, saying, "Before I received the teachings of the Buddhas, I encountered Kātyāyana and Vairāṭīputra, who both claimed, 'After death, this body is completely annihilated—this is called Nirvana.' Although I have now met the Buddha, I still harbor doubts. How can you expound upon this, so that I may realize this mind that neither arises nor ceases? All those in this assembly who are still subject to afflictions wish to hear this."
The Buddha asked the king, "Your body is here before us now. Let me ask you: Is this physical body of yours like indestructible diamond, enduring and unchanging? Or is it subject to decay and transformation?"
World-Honored One, this body of mine will ultimately change and perish.
The Buddha said, "Great King, if you have not yet passed away, how can you know what passing away is like?"
"World-Honored One! Although this impermanent, changing body of mine has not yet perished, I observe that in the present moment, each thought fades away, and each new moment does not remain. Like fire turning to ashes, it gradually diminishes and fades away, ceaselessly declining. I am certain that this body will ultimately come to an end."
The Buddha said, "Indeed, Great King. You have now grown old. How does your appearance compare to when you were a child?"
"World-Honored One! In my childhood, my skin was smooth and supple. As I grew to adulthood, my vitality was abundant and full. But now, old age presses upon me with decline and decay. My form is withered and haggard, my spirit dull and dim. My hair is white, my face wrinkled—it seems I will not last much longer. How can this compare to the vigor and fullness of my prime!"
The Buddha asked, "Great King, does your appearance not suddenly age?"
The king said, "World-Honored One, these subtle changes happen so gradually that I truly do not notice them. It is only through the passing of seasons and the flow of time that I gradually come to realize this. Why is this so? When I was twenty, though still called young, my appearance had already aged compared to when I was ten. By thirty, I had further declined from my twenties. Now, at sixty-two, looking back at my fifties, I see I was still quite strong then. World-Honored One, I observe these hidden shifts, and though this decline occurs over intervals as long as ten years, if I reflect more carefully, the change is not merely over a decade or two—it happens year by year. Nor is it only year by year; it changes month by month. Not just month by month, but day by day. Upon deep and careful contemplation, I see that in every instant, every moment, there is no ceasing of change. Thus I know that this body of mine will ultimately fade and perish."
The Buddha said, "Great King, you have seen how things change and shift without pause, and have realized that you will cease to exist. At the moment of your passing, do you know that within your body there is something that never ceases?"
King Prasenajit folded his hands and said to the Buddha, "I truly do not know."
The Buddha said, "Now I will show you the nature that is neither born nor destroyed. Great King, at what age did you first see the Ganges River?"
The king said: "When I was three years old, my compassionate mother took me to pay respects to the deity Jiva. As we crossed this river, even at that time I recognized it as the Ganges River."
The Buddha said, “Great King, as you described, at age twenty you had declined from age ten, and so on up to age sixty. Moment by moment, year by year, everything changes. Now, when you saw this river at age three, and then at age thirteen, how was the water then?”
The king said, "When I was three years old, it was just as it is now; and now that I am sixty-two, it is still no different."
The Buddha said, "You are now lamenting that your hair is white and your face is wrinkled. The wrinkles on your face are certainly not the same as when you were a child. But now, when you look at this Ganges River, has the seeing itself aged or stayed young compared to when you were a child?"
The king replied, "No, World-Honored One."
The Buddha said, "Great King! Though your face may wrinkle, the essential nature of your seeing never wrinkles. What wrinkles is subject to change; what does not wrinkle remains unchanged. What changes undergoes destruction and ceases to exist, but what is unchanging has fundamentally neither arising nor ceasing. How could it ever be subject to your birth and death? And yet you still follow those like Maskari, who claim that after death, this body is utterly annihilated!"
When the king heard these words, he believed and understood that after death, one leaves one life and enters another. He and the great assembly were filled with joy and excitement, experiencing something they had never felt before.
Ananda immediately rose from his seat, bowed to the Buddha with palms together, and knelt upright, saying, "World-Honored One! If this seeing and hearing are truly unborn and imperishable, why do you say that we have lost our true nature and are acting in confusion? Please, out of compassion, wash away the defilements from my mind!"
The Thus-Come One immediately let his golden-colored arm hang down, pointing his wheel-marked hand toward the ground. "Now look," he said to Ananda, "do you see my mudra hand as upright or inverted?"
Ānanda said, “Beings in this world see this as upside-down, but I myself do not know what is right-side-up and what is upside-down.”
The Buddha said to Ananda, "If worldly people consider this as being upside down, then what do worldly people consider as being correct?"
Ananda said, "When the Tathagata raises his arm and points his cotton-soft hand upward toward the sky, that is called correct."
The Buddha raised his arm and said to Ananda: "If you take this upside-down example where head and tail are swapped, ordinary people would immediately see the confusion. So you should understand: when comparing your own body to the pure Dharma-body of the Thus-Come Ones, the body of the Thus-Come Ones is called 'Right Universal Knowledge,' while your bodies are called 'Nature Inverted.' Now, look closely at your body and the Buddha's body—in what sense are they called inverted? Where does the name 'inverted' actually apply?"
Then Ananda and the great assembly were dazed, staring at the Buddha without blinking, not knowing where their own bodies and minds were inverted. The Buddha, moved by compassion, felt pity for Ananda and the assembly, and with a voice like the ocean tide, declared to all gathered there:
"Good people, I have often said: 'All conditioned phenomena—forms, minds, mental functions, and the objects of perception—are manifestations of the mind alone.' Your body and your mind are both manifestations of the brilliant, true, and wondrous essence of that mind. How, then, have you lost sight of that originally perfect, miraculous, radiant mind, and mistaken the confusion within awareness for reality? You mistake darkness for emptiness; within the murky darkness, you solidify darkness into form; form becomes mixed with delusive thoughts, and these thoughts and forms make up the body. Clinging to conditions, the mind churns within, rushing outward to wander, and you take this restless, confused state to be your mind-nature. Once you mistakenly identify this as the mind, you are convinced it resides within the physical body. You fail to realize that the body, along with mountains, rivers, the vast earth, the sky, and all space, are all things within the wondrous, bright, true mind. It is like abandoning hundreds of thousands of vast, clear oceans and clinging to a single floating bubble, claiming that bubble is the entirety of the ocean’s flow, even the whole tide. You are doubly deluded! It is just like when I lower my hand—there is no real difference. The Thus-Come One declares you to be objects of pity."
Ananda, moved by the Buddha's compassionate rescue and profound teachings, wept and pressed his palms together as he said to the Buddha: "Although I have received such wonderful teachings from the Buddha and have realized that the wondrously enlightened mind is originally perfect and everlasting—the true ground of mind—I still use my conditioned mind to witness and admire the Dharma teachings you are now giving. I have merely gained this realization, but I dare not accept it as my original ground of mind. I pray that the Buddha, out of compassion, will declare the perfect teaching, uproot my doubts, and guide me back to the unsurpassed path."
"Ananda! It is like someone who takes a kalavinka bottle, seals both its openings, fills it entirely with space, and carries it on a long journey of a thousand miles to present it as a gift to another country. The consciousness-skandha should be understood in the same way.
Ananda! This space does not come from the place it left, nor does it enter the place it arrives. Thus, Ananda, if it came from the place it left, then since the bottle originally contained space taken from there, the space at its original location should have diminished. If it enters the place it arrives, then when the bottle is opened and emptied, one should see the space emerging. Therefore, you should know that the consciousness-skandha is illusory; its nature is fundamentally neither caused by conditions nor self-existent."
