The Surangama Sutra, Volume 8
Translated by the Indian Monk Paramiti in the Tang Dynasty
"Ananda, each and every one of these beings, in every category, possesses these twelve kinds of delusion. It is like rubbing your eyes—you see flowers appearing chaotically. This wonderfully perfect, truly pure, luminous mind becomes endowed with such false and chaotic thoughts. In your cultivation to realize the Buddha's samadhi, these fundamental causes of chaotic thoughts must be eliminated through three progressive stages. It is like removing poisoned honey from a clean vessel, then washing it with hot water mixed with ashes and fragrant herbs, before finally filling it with sweet dew. What are these three progressive stages? First, cultivate to remove the contributing causes. Second, truly cultivate to cut off the inherent nature of afflictions. Third, advance further to counteract present karmic activities."
**What are the supporting causes? Ananda, in this world, the twelve categories of beings cannot sustain themselves independently; they rely on four kinds of food for existence: solid food, contact food, mental food, and consciousness food. Therefore, the Buddha said, "All beings depend on food to live."**
**Ananda, all beings live by consuming what is wholesome and die by consuming what is poisonous. For those beings seeking Samadhi, they should cease eating the five pungent plants of the world. These five pungent plants, when cooked, incite lust; when eaten raw, increase anger. In this world, those who eat these pungent plants, even if they can eloquently expound the twelve divisions of the sutras, will be shunned by the heavenly beings and immortals of the ten directions, who all detest their foul odor and keep their distance. Various hungry ghosts, drawn by their eating, will lick their lips. Constantly dwelling with ghosts, their virtuous merit diminishes daily, bringing no lasting benefit. When such people who eat pungent plants cultivate Samadhi, Bodhisattvas, heavenly beings, and virtuous spirits of the ten directions will not come to protect them. Instead, powerful demon kings will seize the opportunity, appearing in the form of a Buddha to preach to them, denouncing the precepts, and praising lust, anger, and ignorance. At the end of their lives, they will become followers of the demon kings. After exhausting the demonic blessings, they will fall into the Avici Hell.**
**Ananda, those who cultivate Bodhi must permanently sever the five pungent plants. This is called the first step of progressive advancement in practice.**
What is the right nature? Ananda, for beings to enter samadhi, they must first strictly uphold pure precepts, permanently sever lustful thoughts, abstain from alcohol and meat, eat food purified by fire, and consume nothing that retains life force. Ananda, if a practitioner does not cut off lust and killing, there is no way they can transcend the three realms. They should regard sexual desire as a poisonous snake, as a sworn enemy. First, they must uphold the four root offenses and eight major offenses of the Śrāvaka path, keeping the body still and unmoving. Then, they must practice the pure precepts of the Bodhisattva path, ensuring the mind does not give rise to defilements. When the precepts are fully accomplished, they will forever cease the karmic cycles of mutual birth and mutual killing in the world. Without theft or robbery, there will be no debts to repay, and no lingering karmic obligations from past lives. Such a pure person, cultivating samadhi, will—even with their ordinary physical body, without needing the divine eye—naturally perceive the worlds in all ten directions, see the Buddhas, hear the Dharma, personally receive the sacred teachings, attain great spiritual powers, travel through the ten directions, purify their past lives, and be free from all hardships and dangers. This is called the second stage of progressive cultivation.
What is the manifestation of karma? Ananda, consider a person who maintains pure precepts, whose mind is free from greed and lust, and who does not chase after the six external sense-objects. Because they do not chase after them, their awareness naturally returns inward. Since the sense-objects are no longer pursued, the sense-faculties have nothing to attach to, and the flow of consciousness turns back entirely to its source. The six sense-faculties cease their ordinary functions, and the ten directions of the world appear clear and pure. It is like a crystal-clear gem with the bright moon suspended within—body and mind become joyful, perfectly balanced in wondrous unity, and they attain great peace and stability. Within this state, the secret, perfect, pure, and wondrous nature of all Buddhas manifests. At this point, the person attains the patience of non-arising. From here, they gradually cultivate further, establishing themselves in the stages of sainthood according to their practice. This is called the third progressive stage of cultivation.
"Ananda, this virtuous man, with his desires and attachments dried up, and his senses no longer entangled with external objects, the residual elements of his present existence will not give rise to rebirth. His grasping mind becomes empty and luminous, purely wisdom itself. The nature of this wisdom is bright and perfect, illuminating the ten directions. Because his wisdom is now 'dried' of defilements, this stage is called the 'Dry Wisdom Ground.'"
When the initial desire to learn is first dried up, and one has not yet connected with the flow of the Tathāgata’s Dharma, the mind enters the middle way and flows inward, opening in perfect wonder. From true, wondrous perfection, true wonder arises again, and wondrous faith abides forever. All delusions are extinguished without remainder; the middle way is pure and true—this is called the **Abiding of Faith**.
With true faith, one clearly understands that all is perfectly interpenetrating; the three realms—the aggregates, sense bases, and elements—cannot obstruct it. Thus, even past and future lives across countless eons, all habits from abandoning and receiving bodies appear in the present. Such a good man can remember them without omission—this is called the **Abiding of Mindfulness**.
Perfectly wondrous and purely true, true essence manifests and transforms; beginningless habits merge into a single lucidity. With this lucidity alone, one advances toward true purity—this is called the **Abiding of Diligence**.
When the mind’s essence appears, purely through wisdom—this is called the **Abiding of Wisdom**.
Holding wisdom-brightness, pervading stillness and clarity, stillness and wonder constantly stabilized—this is called the **Abiding of Samādhi**.
The light of samādhi shines forth, brightness deepens, advancing only, never retreating—this is called the **Abiding of Non-retrogression**.
The mind advances peacefully, maintaining without loss, connecting with the breath of all Tathāgatas in the ten directions—this is called the **Abiding of Protecting the Dharma**.
Awareness-brightness is maintained, able with wondrous power to turn the Buddha’s compassionate light back toward abiding in the Buddha. Like two mirrors reflecting each other’s light, wondrous images enter one another endlessly—this is called the **Abiding of Dedication**.
The mind’s light secretly returns, attaining the Buddha’s constant stillness, supreme wondrous purity, abiding in non-action without loss—this is called the **Abiding of Precepts**.
Abiding in precepts with ease, able to roam the ten directions, going wherever the vow leads—this is called the **Abiding of Vow**.
Ananda, this virtuous man, through genuine skillful means, awakens these ten minds. The essence of the mind fully manifests, and the ten functions interpenetrate, perfectly completing a single mind. This is called the Stage of Awakening the Mind.
Within the mind, clarity arises, like pure gold appearing within a clear crystal. With this wondrous mind as the foundation, he establishes his ground. This is called the Stage of Cultivating the Ground.
The mind-ground and its discernment both become clear and luminous. He traverses the ten directions without obstruction. This is called the Stage of Practicing Conduct.
His conduct aligns with that of the Buddha, and he receives the Buddha's vital influence. Like an intermediate being seeking its parents, through subtle affinity and hidden connection, he enters the lineage of the Tathagata. This is called the Stage of Noble Birth.
Having entered the womb of the Way, he personally serves the Heir of Enlightenment. Like a fetus fully formed with all human features complete, this is called the Stage of Perfecting Skillful Means.
His appearance resembles that of a Buddha, and his mental state is also the same. This is called the Stage of Right Mind.
Body and mind unite and increasingly flourish. This is called the Stage of Non-retrogression.
The ten spiritual forms and their characteristics are all simultaneously perfected. This is called the Stage of Childlike Purity.
His form fully developed, he emerges from the womb, personally becoming a child of the Buddha. This is called the Stage of Dharma Prince.
Manifesting as a mature being, he is like a great king who entrusts various affairs of state to the crown prince. When that king's heir comes of age, he is arrayed for the anointment ceremony. This is called the Stage of Anointment.
Ananda, when this virtuous man has become a true child of the Buddha, he is endowed with the wondrous virtues of the Tathagata, immeasurable and complete. He follows along with all beings in the ten directions—this is called the Practice of Joy. He skillfully benefits all sentient beings—this is called the Practice of Benefiting. He awakens himself and awakens others, encountering no resistance—this is called the Practice of Non-Anger. His kind manifests throughout the endless future, equal across past, present, and future, penetrating the ten directions—this is called the Practice of the Inexhaustible. All things harmonize as one, and the various Dharma gates are attained without error—this is called the Practice of Freedom from Confusion. Then, within sameness, he reveals all differences, and within each difference, he sees sameness—this is called the Practice of Skillful Manifestation. Further, even to the point where the ten directions of space are filled with fine dust motes, within each mote he manifests the realms of the ten directions; manifesting motes and manifesting realms without hindering one another—this is called the Practice of Non-Attachment. All manifestations that appear before him are foremost in perfection—this is called the Practice of Reverence. Such perfect fusion can establish the guiding principles of all Buddhas in the ten directions—this is called the Practice of Wholesome Dharma. Each and every one is pure, without outflows, truly one, unconditioned, and inherently so by nature—this is called the Practice of Truth.
"Ananda! This virtuous man, having perfected his spiritual powers and accomplished the deeds of a Buddha, is pure in essence and genuine in spirit, far removed from all lingering afflictions. He should liberate all sentient beings while eliminating any notion of liberation, turning his unconditioned mind toward the path of Nirvana. This is called the 'Vow of Saving All Sentient Beings While Transcending the Notion of Sentient Beings.'
He destroys what can be destroyed and transcends all that can be transcended. This is called the 'Vow of Indestructibility.'
His fundamental awareness is serene and clear, equal to the enlightenment of a Buddha. This is called the 'Vow of Equality with All Buddhas.'
His pure essence manifests brilliantly, and his state is like that of a Buddha. This is called the 'Vow of Reaching Everywhere.'
Worlds and Buddhas interpenetrate one another without obstruction. This is called the 'Vow of the Inexhaustible Treasury of Merit.'
On the same ground as a Buddha, each aspect gives rise to pure causes, and through these causes, he attains the path to Nirvana. This is called the 'Vow of Following and Upholding Equal Good Roots.'
Once his true roots are established, all sentient beings in the ten directions are his own nature. With his nature perfected, he does not abandon sentient beings. This is called the 'Vow of Following and Observing All Sentient Beings Equally.'
He embraces all phenomena while transcending all forms, neither clinging to embracing nor transcending. This is called the 'Vow of the True Suchness.'
Having attained true suchness, he is unobstructed in all ten directions. This is called the 'Vow of Unbound Liberation.'
His virtuous nature is perfected, and the limitations of the Dharma realm vanish. This is called the 'Vow of the Immeasurable Dharma Realm.'"
"Ananda, this virtuous man, having fully perfected the forty-one stages of pure mind, next accomplishes four wondrous and perfect preparatory practices. First, he takes the Buddha's enlightenment as his own mind. It is as if he is drilling wood to make fire—the flame is about to emerge but has not yet ignited. This stage is called the 'Warmth Ground.' Next, he makes his own mind tread the path of the Buddha. It is as if he is climbing a high mountain, his body entering the empty sky, yet still feeling a slight hindrance below. This stage is called the 'Summit Ground.' Then, his mind and the Buddha's mind become one, perfectly attaining the Middle Way. It is like a person who endures something—neither holding it within nor letting it out. This stage is called the 'Patience Ground.' Finally, all distinctions and measurements vanish; there is no longer any distinction between delusion and enlightenment, nor any label for the Middle Way. This stage is called the 'Supreme Worldly Ground.'"
"Ananda, this virtuous man has thoroughly comprehended the great enlightenment, awakening to the complete realm of the Tathagata's Buddhahood. This is called the Stage of Joy.
When differences merge into sameness, and even that sameness dissolves, this is called the Stage of Freedom from Defilement.
When purity reaches its peak and brightness arises, this is called the Stage of Illumination.
When brightness reaches its fullness and awakening is perfected, this is called the Stage of Blazing Wisdom.
Where all distinctions and similarities cannot reach, this is called the Stage of Invincibility.
When the unconditioned true suchness reveals its pure and luminous nature, this is called the Stage of Direct Presence.
When one fully penetrates the ultimate extent of true suchness, this is called the Stage of Far-Reaching Practice.
When the mind abides as one true suchness, this is called the Stage of Immovability.
When the function of true suchness manifests, this is called the Stage of Excellent Wisdom."
Ananda, these Bodhisattvas, from this point onward, having completed their cultivation, have perfected their merit and virtue. This stage is also called the Stage of Cultivation, where the wondrous cloud of compassion overshadows the sea of Nirvana, and is named the Stage of the Dharma Cloud.
The Tathagata moves against the current, while the Bodhisattva proceeds along with it; when the stream of awakening meets the shore of enlightenment, this is called Equal Enlightenment.
Ananda, from the initial dry wisdom mind up to the stage of equal enlightenment, this enlightenment first obtains the initial dry wisdom ground within the diamond-like mind. In this way, through the successive progression of the twelve single and combined stages, one fully accomplishes the wondrous enlightenment and attains the supreme path.
