Thus I have heard:
Once, the Bhagavan was dwelling in the monastery of Jeta's Grove, in the Anāthapiṇḍada Park near Śrāvastī. At that time, there was a monk named Sāti, who had only recently left home and received full ordination—new to the monastic discipline. He was cutting firewood for the community to prepare bathing water. A large black snake emerged from a hole in the rotten wood and bit the monk on the big toe of his right foot. The venom spread throughout his body; he collapsed unconscious to the ground, with foam coming from his mouth and his eyes rolling upward.
Then Venerable Ānanda saw that monk suffering greatly from venom. He quickly went to the Buddha, bowed at his feet, and said: "World-Honored One! The monk Sāti has been bitten and is in terrible agony, as I have just described. Out of your great compassion, how can you help and protect him?" Having said this,
Then the Buddha said to Ananda: "I have a Great Mother of Buddhas, the Radiant King Great Mantra. It possesses immense power that can eliminate all poisons, fears, disasters, and afflictions, while protecting and nurturing all beings, bringing them peace and happiness. Take this Mother of Buddhas Radiant King Great Mantra and use it to rescue the monk Sati. Use it to establish the earth boundary and the directional boundary, bringing stability and safety, so that all suffering and distress are completely eliminated.
Should they be possessed or controlled by heavenly dragons, Asuras, Maruts, Garudas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, Mahoragas, Yakshas, Rakshasas, Pretas, Pisachas, Bhutas, Kumbhandas, Putañas, Kataputañas, Skandas, Umanas, Chayas, Apasmaras, or Ustarakas—beings who seize and afflict others—the Mother of Buddhas Radiant King Mantra can protect them, granting them freedom from worry and fear, and a lifespan of one hundred years.
Or if someone falls prey to others' curses, spells, black magic, or harmful practices—such as Kritikas, Karmanas, Kakurunas, Kiranas, Vetanas, those who drink blood and marrow, those who transform humans into servants, those who summon ghosts and spirits, or those who create evil karma through poison, tainted food, malevolent shadows, malicious stares, harmful jumps, or malicious leaps, or who write harmful letters or commit rebellious acts—any such evil deeds meant to cause trouble, this Mother of Buddhas Radiant King Mantra will protect that person, along with their family, so that none of these harmful forces can affect them.
Furthermore, for all fevers lasting one day, two days, three days, four days, up to seven days, half a month, or even a full month; intermittent fevers or sudden fevers; every kind of fever, including the four hundred and four diseases; chronic fevers, paralysis, goiters; fevers caused by spirits; imbalances of wind, bile, and phlegm; diseases resulting from the combination of the three humors; indigestion; headaches or half-headaches; pain in the eyes, ears, nose; pain in the lips, mouth, or cheeks; pain in the teeth, tongue; pain in the throat, chest, ribs, back; heart pain, stomach pain, lower back pain, abdominal pain; thigh pain, knee pain; pain in the four limbs; pain in hidden places; or pain throughout the entire body—all these afflictions will be completely eliminated.
May the Mother of Buddhas protect me, [insert name], along with my family. As I establish the earth boundary and the directional boundary, while reciting this scripture, may we all be safe and secure."
And he spoke this verse:
"Grant me peace at night, Peace through the day, At all times, May the Buddhas watch over me."
He spoke a dharani, saying:
Tadyathā: Ine vini kini hine mini ṇini aṇne gaṇne nugaṇne harini vaguṇe baṅguśaśiṇi aruhaṇi uruhaṇi eḷe meḷe teḷe tili tili meḷe meḷe time time nume nume ijiyapilya māpūja śavaṇa pratāraya vyākālaye vikālaye apriyāntata stambhanāta daṣṭānā mukhehīnā vṛtti virodha kūṭa kūṭa kūṭa kūṭa kūḍa māra māra māra māra māra māra māra māra māra māra rāja rāja rāja rāja rāja rāja rāja rāja rāja rāja nāma namaṇa dāta dātaṇa śvāla śvālaṇa byāla byālaṇa hāla hālaṇa nuṇa gajaṇa dharāṣaṇi saparyaṇi attapaṇa pācaṇa harini dhāriṇikāriṇi kampaṇa manaṇa māntiki makari śakari kakari śokari śaṅkari śvāriṇi numa numvri numve numve golāya parivrāya dharāṣṭu nīve sāmantena ikṣikasthāna svāhā!
(If you are reciting this sutra and reach this point, you may make whatever wish you have—just speak it aloud. In times of severe drought, say: "May heaven send rain." In times of severe flooding, say: "May heaven stop the rain." If there is war, banditry, plague, famine, or any other hardship, simply state your situation. With a focused heart, make your request, and it will be granted as you wish.)
Ānanda, there are names of dragon kings. You should arouse a mind of loving-kindness and recite these names to dispel all poisons. They are:
**To the Dragon King of Maintaining the Nation, I offer loving-kindness. To Iraṇa the Serpent, constant kindness I send. To Virūpākṣa the Dragon King, I extend the same, To the Dark One Karkoṭaka, my thoughts are full of care.**
**To the Mapi Dragon King, I offer compassion. To Vāsuki Nāga, a heart of kindness flows. To Kālakā with a staff, I hold this blessing, To Pūrṇabhadra, may my goodwill always go.**
**To Varuṇa of the Cool Lake, to Mandalaka and Takṣaka, To Nanda, and to Upananda, Nāgas born, To them all, I constantly send my goodwill and intent.**
**To the Boundless Dragon King, I hold a caring heart. To Vās Mukha Nāga, kindness I impart. To Ajita (the Invincible) Nāga, constant kindness I send, To Huhu the Nāga King, my wish for peace will never end.**
**To Great Manasa, I offer my compassion true, To Little Manasa, the same goodwill is due. To Apalāla, to Kālaka, To Riches-Like the Nāga, and his equals all— To the Nāga of the River Mouth, and Mapi Nāga King, To White Lotus and the Four Guardians—these many beings.**
**To the Crocodile-Mouthed, the Clam-Foot, the Taster-Feeling, and the Horse-Best— All are held in kindness, each and every guest.**
**To Sagita, the Offering-Offering Nāga, Needle-Hair and Feeling-Chest, To Rṣika, I send loving-kindness, to Full-Ear and Chariot-Face. To Kulaka, my care extends, to Pāśi-putra and Su-nanda, To Elāpattra, the Great Nāga, to Lambilaka, compassion rends.**
**To the Spirit-Like Nāga Kings, kindness I bestow, To Sublime-Spirit, the same does flow. To the Merciless-One, constant kindness may there be, To Mucilinda, I wish harmony.**
**Some Nāga Kings walk on the ground below, Some Nāga Kings always live in the sky. Some dwell on Mount Sumeru, high and grand, While others in the waters make their quiet stand.**
**To Nāga Kings with a single head, I offer goodwill bright, To those with two, the same is true, And so to those with many heads— To all such Nāgas, I wish a peaceful night.**
**Whether Nāgas with no feet, or two, or four, Or those with many feet, on surface or on floor, May all Great Nāgas, in their hearts, take a kind turn— A mutual kindness, in return.**
**These Nāga Kings, with majesty endowed, With beauty, strength, and fame allowed, When gods and demons clash in war, With mystic power, they are bold and more.**
**Let no footless ones harm me with deceit, Let two-footed, four-footed never meet my defeat, Let all many-footed Nāgas never strike, But from my body, let all harm take its flight.**
**To Nāgas and to Spirits, I send my care, Whether on the ground or in the air. May all living beings, hearts aligned, Protect each other with a mind that's kind.**
**And may all beings, born in any way, And all great spirits, night and day, See only signs of peace and grace, Never witnessing misfortune's face.**
**I always send a vast and loving thought, To charm and clear all poison they have brought. To benefit, protect, and keep them free from fright, Wherever and whenever, day and night.**
Homage to the Buddha. Homage to the Enlightened One. Homage to the Liberated One. Homage to the Liberated One. Homage to the Peaceful One. Homage to the Peaceful One. Homage to the Utterly Liberated One. Homage to the Utterly Liberated One.
Those who are pure in conduct can overcome all bad karma.
I bow with respect to such ones, and pray they always guard me.
If I ever face terror or all kinds of confusion,
Times of disaster, strange illnesses or changes,
If I am poisoned, or when harm comes to me,
Protect me and my family, keep us healthy for a hundred years.
The Buddha said to Ananda: "In the past, on the southern side of the Snow Mountain, the Golden Splendor Peacock King lived there. Every morning, he would recite the Great Peacock Wisdom King Dharani of the Buddha Mother. During the day, he would surely be at peace. Reciting it at dusk, he would surely be safe at night." Then he spoke the dharani:

"Ananda! Once upon a time, the Golden Peacock King suddenly forgot to recite this Great Peacock Wisdom King Dharani of the Buddha-Mother. Along with a large retinue of peahens, he roamed from forest to forest and from mountain to mountain, indulging in play. Entranced by desire and attachment, lost in heedless confusion, he entered a mountain cave. At that moment, a hunter-enemy, seeking an opportunity, captured the Peacock King with a bird snare. As soon as he was caught, he recollected his true mindfulness. Immediately, he recited the Great Peacock Wisdom King Dharani of the Buddha-Mother as before. Instantly, the bonds that held him were naturally released, his retinue was safe and tranquil, and they all returned to their original dwelling place." Then, the following Dharani of the Wisdom King was proclaimed:
Namo Buddhāya (1). Namo Dharmāya (2). Namo Saṅghāya (3). Homage to Noble Sorrowless One (4), To the Sun of Wisdom’s Radiant Light (5), To the Great Loving Mother of All Liberation – (6) To her, the Mother of Infinite Eyes of Compassion (7), (8).
Thus it is said: (9) Perfect (10), Utterly Perfect (11), Freeing (12), Liberating (13), The Supreme Goal (14), The Ultimate Supreme Goal (15), Without Stain (16), Free from All Stains (17), Beyond All Stains (18), Auspicious (19), Sweet and Completely Fulfilling (20), Precious and Fulfilling (21), The Virtuous Path (22), the Supremely Virtuous Path (23), The Universally Virtuous Path (24).
She Who Brings All Wishes to Fulfillment (25), She Who Brings Ultimate Meaning to Life (26), She Who Completes All Aims (27), She Who Makes All Good Things Flourish (28).
Great Mind (29), Great Wisdom (30), Utterly Great Wisdom (31), The Powerful One (32), The Completely Purified One (33), The One Beyond all Limits (34), The Flame (35), The Radiant Flame (36), Without Limit (37), Deathless Nectar (38), Without Dual (39), Ever-Pure Unborn (40).
Sacred as Brahma (41), Sacred Goddess with Brahma’s Grace (42), Full and Fulfilled (43), Filled with all Perfections (44), Radiant Power of Nectar Light (45), Auspicious Grace (46), Grace of the Moon (47), Light of the Sun (48), Radiant Splendor Blazing On (49), Lady of the Rays of Golden Light (50), Luminous and Pure One (51), Splendor of the Highest God (52), The God-like Beauty (53),
May She be with All and Everywhere (54), Removing All Obstacles (55). Svāhā (56)!
Homage to All Buddhas (57). May they truly bless me and my family (58), And all who dwell within this circle (59). May harm be averted (60), May all blessings come (61). May protection and peace surround (62), May all dangers cease (63). Blessings Now (64), And through all times: may all good things arise! (65)
Svāhā (66)!
The Buddha said to Ananda: "The Golden Peacock King of the past—was that someone else? It was myself. Now I will again speak the Dharani of the Great Peacock Bright King, the Mother of All Buddhas:"
The Dharani says:
Adhimiti, timiti, timiri miti, tili pi, mili, militi mi, tili mili, suddha vaddha, suddha vaddha, su vaca, ciriksiya, pina me ni, namo buddhanam, cikksi pan dha mu li, adi hi ru, ruhi ta mu li, dham va, am va, ku ci, ku na ci, ti ra ku ca na ci, a na va ta ya, ra sa tu nai mu, na va ma sa, na sa ma si ti, adi mi ri, kili mili, kela mili, kidu mu li, nu nu mi, sunu mi nai, na li mi, sandhu ne, musa ne, musale musale, ai na va sutra ci, na ka la, na ka li mi, kha ra ma ra, ki li adi, sa ja li, tu ve, tu du ni, a na ne, pra na ne, a na na ne, va ra sa tu nai mu, namo da ke na, sandha ne du, samanti na, a ra ya ni, pa ra ya ni, ha ri ta ri, gun dhu ri, i mi ssu ti, gitti mi ssu ti, i mi sidham tu, na ra mi na, mantra ma na svaha.
“Ananda! This Dharani of the Great Peacock Wisdom Mother, the heart of all Buddhas, should be recalled by anyone who wishes to enter a village. Recite it in the wilderness; when traveling on a road, or even off the road, always keep it in mind. Recite it upon entering a king’s palace, when meeting bandits, in times of conflict, in danger from fire or flood, when confronting enemies, in a crowd, when stung by snakes or scorpions, when poisoned, in any moment of fear, or when afflicted by disorders of wind, bile, or phlegm. Recite it for the three types of ailments, or for each of the four hundred and four illnesses. Whenever suffering arises, always remember it.
Why is that? For if someone deserves the death penalty, by this they may be freed through a fine; if they deserve a fine, they may be freed with a light beating; if they deserve a light beating, they may be freed with a scolding; if they deserve a scolding, they may be freed with a reprimand; if they deserve a reprimand, they may be freed with trembling; if they deserve trembling, they may be naturally released. All their sorrows and anxieties will be completely dispelled.”
"Ānanda! This Great Peacock Wisdom King Mantra of the Buddha Mother has been proclaimed together by all Thus-Come Ones. One should constantly uphold it, speak one's own name, and make this request for protection: 'May you embrace me (this person), dispel all fears, and when faced with weapons, staffs, or shackles in times of suffering, may I be fully liberated. May I always encounter benefit, never meet disaster or danger, live for a hundred years, and see a hundred autumns.' Ānanda! If any person—whether a heavenly being, human, Māra, Brahmin, renunciant, or priest—recites, upholds, and maintains this Buddha Mother Great Peacock Wisdom King Dharani, establishing its boundary lines and cardinal directions, requesting protection with single-minded dedication, I do not see any being among the heavens, dragons, or spirits that can harm them. That is to say:
* Heavenly beings, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and all their companions—none can cause harm. * Dragons, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and all their companions—none can cause harm. * Asuras, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Garudas, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Kinnaras, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Mahoragas, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Yakshas, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Rakshasas, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Pretas, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Pishachas, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Bhutas, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Kumbhandas, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Putanas, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Kataputanas, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Skandas, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Unmadas, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Chayas, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Apasmaras, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm. * Ostharakas, their wives, sons, daughters, parents, and companions—none can cause harm."
Thus, any dragons, yakshas, spirits, or ghosts—along with their relatives and companions—who harbor evil intentions, waiting for a chance to harm people or create obstacles—even if such beings intend harm, they cannot disturb or confuse those who uphold this sutra. Why is that? Because such people constantly uphold the mantra of the Buddha-Mother, the Sovereign Lady of Wisdom. As for these dragons, spirits, or ghosts that seek to cause harm: if they withdraw and return to their own domains, they will not be permitted to rejoin their kind. Should anyone violate this mantra of the Buddha-Mother or transgress its boundaries, their head will split into seven pieces, like the tip of a basil branch (In Sanskrit, this is called Argamanjarī, meaning the tip of a basil branch; earlier translations that say "A-li tree branch" are incorrect—there is no A-li tree in the West.).
"Furthermore, Ananda, there is a Dharani of the Brilliant King that you should receive and uphold." Then he spoke the Dharani:
Tadyathā: Iri-miri, kinukite-mukite, su-mukite. Anā-nā, su-nā-nā. Varaṣa-tu-dhye vā, parama-ṅata-yām. Ārā-parā-parā. Ghōnu-hi-kā. Iri-miri, pīṅ-ri-kā. Unu-kā, un-nu-kā. Iri-miri, tiri-miri. Samantataḥ-kṛta-vā. Hulu-hulu, hiri-hiri, miri-miri, kiri-kiri, śri-lā-nā. Mṛi-śām, mulu-mulu, cala-cala, cili-cili, culu-culu. Viti-viti, śiki-śiki. I-viti-viti, śiki-śiki. Hucu-hucu, hucu-hucu, hucu-hucu, hucu-hucu, hucu-hucu. Harā-harā, harā-nī. Sambhe, pra-sambhe. Sarva-duṣṭa, manuṣya, sambhe-mi. Mama-sa-parivāra-śa, rakṣāṁ-kāru-mi. Jīva-tu, vara-ṣa-śedām. Paśya-tu-śarāṇaṁ, gṛhya-pari-trāṇa. Śāntiṁ, svāsthya-yana. Daṇḍa-pari-hāṇa, viṣa-nu-ṣa-nāṁ. Viṣa-nā-śa-nāṁ. Śimā-mantram, dhāraṇī-mantrāṁ ca kāru-mi. Cittre, citra-maya. Hare, harā-male. Phale, phalā-male. Kulu-kulu, khara-varuṇi. Vele, e ye. Aru-māru.
May all poison be removed, And those who harbor ill intent. Root poisons, venom of fangs, Poisons within food and drink. Through the Buddha's radiant might, May the suffering of poison be cleared.
Sulu-sulu-ke, vara-vara-ke, vāra-ke, viri-hiri. May every poison be dissolved, May harm never come to me.
The seven Buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, The perfectly awakened Knowers, Together with their noble disciples— By their power, may all poisons vanish.
Elā-melā, ili-melā, tili-tili-melā. Tiha-nu-ha, vi-mā-nu-mā. Esu-nu-mā, sun-mā, tun-mā, samā-tun-mā. Ā-nai-nā-nai, kula-kula-va-nā-nai. Vara-ṣa-tu-dhye-vā, iri-kṣi, samānti-nā. Nāva-mā-sā, nā-sva-mā-sā. Maitri-me, sarva-sattveṣu. Musa-ne, mu-dāri-ṇi. Ke-va-ti-ke, vaṭa-ka-mule. I-ti-śa-vale, tu-me-bi-tu-me. Priyaṅ-gale, ā-vaṭe. Pari-vaṭe, na-vā-na-ke-nā. Vara-ṣa-tu-dhye-vā.
Namo Bhagavate Indrāya, gopaśikāya. I-viti-vati-ya, ghōnu-hi-kāya. Briṅgāri-kāya, ari-tari, kum-tari. Ā-śa-ni, pāśa-ni, pāpa-ni-ku-le.
Namo Bhagavatāṁ, Siddhyantu mantra-pada. Svāhā.
Vipassi Buddha sat beneath the coral tree; Sikhi Buddha dwelt under the blooming lotus; Vessabhu Buddha stayed in the sala grove; Kakusandha Buddha rested by the acacia tree; Konagamana Buddha sat beneath the fig tree; Kassapa Buddha rested by the banyan tree; Gotama, the Sakyan sage, Gained full enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.
All these World-Honored Ones, endowed with great majesty, Received abundant offerings from the devas, who were filled with faith and reverence.
All spirits and unseen beings rejoiced with joyful minds, Praying that I may always be safe, far from all misfortune and harm.
The Seven Buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have proclaimed this:
Tadyathā: Omi, li-mi, gi-li vi-li, Keli va-li, Unu-ra, su-nu-mu-me, Mu-sa-ra, hu-hu, Ga-ra-shi, ga-ra-ja-mu-le, I(d)ti-she-va-dā, ku-du-li, Nā-ra-ya-ni, Pa-she-ni, pa-she pa-she-ni, Kapi-ra-va-su-tu, I-ri-vā, sid-dhi-mu, Na-ra-mi-nu, ma-ntra-pa-da svā-hā.
"Furthermore, Ānanda, there are great Yaksha names that have been proclaimed by Brahmā, the lord of the Sahā world, Śakra, the Four Great Kings, and twenty-eight great Yaksha generals: 'Whoever accepts and upholds these great Yaksha names shall, even if ghosts or spirits harbor malicious intent to disturb or harm them, have their heads split into seven pieces, like the tip of a blue lotus.'" Then the names of the Yakshas are recited:
Tadyathā (repeat twice): (1) Kīrti, mucale, eḍu-mucale, (2) Samantamucale, (3) Ānanānane, (4) Kutsānane, (5) Iḍī-midī, (6) Paluḍu—aruṇa-kṣu- (7) Iri-kicīri, (8) Ā-nusi kā, (9) Udusumā, (10) Bida-vaitā.
"May all blessings come to those with two feet, And blessings to those with four as well; Blessings on the path ahead, And blessings when we turn to come back.
May the night be good and the day be good, In every place may goodness reign; May we never meet with evil, May every day be right, every moment wise.
All Buddhas have great power, All Arhats have cut off their faults; By this true and honest word, May I always find peace and good fortune."
The Buddha said to Ananda: “When reciting this Sutra of the Great Peacock Wisdom King, speak these words: ‘The Great Peacock Wisdom King, as proclaimed by the Buddha, I pray that through his divine power, he will always protect me, grant me blessings and guidance, take me as his refuge, bring peace and good fortune, and keep me free from all calamities, harm from weapons, poison, or medicine. Now, in accordance with the Dharma, I establish the boundaries of this land and its directions, to eliminate all worries and afflictions. May I live a hundred years, and hope to complete a full century of life.’”
"Furthermore, Ananda, there are great Yaksha kings and their generals who dwell by the great sea, or on Mount Sumeru and other mountains, or in the wilderness, or by rivers, marshes, ponds, and lakes, or in charnel grounds, pits, and caves, or in villages, crossroads, gardens, groves, and forests, or elsewhere. There is the great Yaksha who resides in the realm of King Anavadya. May all of them, with the help of this Mother of Great Peacocks, the Dharani of the Great Peacock Wisdom King, protect me, this person, and all my loved ones, granting us a lifespan of one hundred years." Then the Dharani is spoken:
The Dharani:
Tadyathā Harī, harīṇi Carī, carīṇi Trapaṇi Mohani Sthambhani Sambhani Svāyambhu Svāhā
"Furthermore, Ananda, in the eastern direction there is a great heavenly king named Dhritarashtra. He is the lord of the Gandharvas and is accompanied by countless hundreds of thousands of Gandharvas as his retinue, protecting the east. He has descendants, brothers, generals, ministers, and various servants—such are his multitudes. They too, through this Great Peacock Wisdom King Mother of Dharani, protect me (So-and-so) and my family, dispelling worries and sorrows, so that we may live one hundred years in health and see one hundred autumns. Again, Ananda, in the southern region there is a great heavenly king named Virūḍhaka. He is the lord of the Kumbhāṇḍas, and is accompanied by countless hundreds of thousands of Kumbhāṇḍas as his retinue, protecting the south. He has sons, grandsons, brothers, generals, ministers, and various servants. May these beings, too, through this Great Peahen’s Bright King Dhāraṇī—the mother of all Buddhas—protect me ([Name]) and my family, removing sorrow and trouble, granting a lifespan of one hundred years, and allowing us to see one hundred autumns.

All of these beings also use this Great Peacock Wisdom King Dharani to protect me([Name]) and my family, dispelling our worries and distress, so that we may live a hundred years and see a hundred autumns. Tadyathā: Su-li su-li, Shili shili, Mati-hari, Hari-mati, Kari-ri, Hari-ri, Bilu bilu, Bһingili, Julu julu, Duntu-mati, Haritan-visham, Duntu-mati svāhā.
In the East is the King who Holds the Realm, In the South the King of Growth by name, In the West the Broad-Eyed King is hailed, In the North the King of Many a Fame. These Four Great Kings protect the world, renowned, Guarding all directions all around. With mighty armies and majestic might, They subdue outer foes and put them to flight. No enemy can harm, their power is bright, Free from all terror, they dwell in light. When gods and demons in battle contend, These kings lend their aid, and bring peace without end. With such great assemblies, may this sovereign’s grace Protect me and my kin in every place. Grant freedom from sickness, a hundred years long. The Dharani says:
Namo Tadyathaa. E le mi le, Dili mi le, Va shi nu mi nu nu mi. (For rain, recite these four lines.) Va ra sha du ne san man di na. (For calamity relief or wishes: "[Name] and family, may our wishes be fulfilled.") Hiri mili, Don ve du don ve, An da va da, Lu pa ra ma nu va da, Va ra sha du ne wu, Ga ru gan da ya, Don nai du don nai, Su ki mu ki, I li ni, Mi li ni, Hiri hiri, Hulu hulu, Hiri mili, Du li da lu li sva ha.
Gods, titans, yakshas, and such— All who come here to learn the Dharma should set their minds sincerely. Uphold the Buddha's teaching, make it last long; Each diligently practice what the World-Honored One instructed.
All listeners who arrive May be on the ground or in the air. Always bring compassionate hearts to the human world, Both day and night dwelling naturally in the Dharma.
May all worlds be ever peaceful, Boundless merit and wisdom benefit all beings. May all karmic obstacles be cleared away, Far from all suffering, return to perfect stillness.
Always use the incense of discipline to adorn your being, Constantly wear the garment of focused meditation to sustain your life. With the wondrous flowers of enlightenment, adorn everywhere, Wherever you dwell, be always at ease and joyful.

"The eldest son of Kubera is named Sanshiya. He constantly rides upon humans and dwells in the land of Mimiluo. Through the truthful power of heaven, all people come to him to pray and make their wishes."
Using this Great Peacock Wisdom King’s mantra, may it also protect me [name] and all my family, dispelling anxiety and sorrow, granting a lifespan of one hundred years, and the blessing to see one hundred autumns. Then the mantra was spoken:

At Antioch? / Ananta-vata? City, surrounded by a hundred crore spirits, Such Yakshas, possessing great armies and great might, Subdue other enemies, and none can conquer them. Their fame fills all directions, endowed with great majestic virtue. They aided the gods in war when they fought the Asuras."
"All these multitudes of merit—the great Yaksa spirits throughout Jambudvipa who protect the Dharma—have awakened compassionate minds. They constantly protect me, [Name], through this Great Peacock Wisdom King's mantra, embracing and blessing me, bringing peace and stability. All calamities and hardships are completely eliminated. Whether harmed by weapons or poison, threatened by kings, thieves, water, or fire, or seized by devas, nagas, yaksas, or ghosts—including all manner of evil spirits and tormenting entities—may they all stay far away from me, [Name], and from all my family. I establish the boundary of the earth and the boundaries of the directions as I recite this sutra. May all sorrow and worry be removed, may my life span reach one hundred years, and may I see one hundred autumns." Then the mantra is spoken:

May all harmful things toward [this person’s name] be shaken off: dhu dhu dhu dhu dhu dhu dhu dhu dhu dhu.
May all poison affecting [this person’s name] be purified: ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
May all curses and spells cast against [this person’s name] be neutralized: jili jili, jili jili, jili jili, jili jili, jili jili.
May all [this person’s name]’s negative karma be completely eliminated: curu curu, curu curu, curu curu, curu curu, curu curu.

"I pray that all divine beings will always protect me (So-and-so) and my family, granting us a long life of one hundred years, and that we may witness one hundred autumns."
The Buddha told Ananda: "There are also twenty-eight Yaksa generals whose names you should recite. These Yaksa generals can protect all living beings throughout the ten directions and eliminate disasters and difficulties. Four Yaksa generals reside in the east, guarding all beings there and freeing them from sorrow and suffering. Their names are:
"Nigga(pronounced like "neega") Ga(long a) Su Ning Da La(two syllables, drawn out)(second) Bu La Na(two syllables) Jia(third) Jie Bi La(last)."
With this Great Peacock Wisdom King Mother, may the Buddha protect me ([name]), along with all my family, granting a lifespan of one hundred years.(All requests made here follow this same pattern.)

"Ananda, there are four great Yaksha generals who dwell permanently in the celestial realm, protecting all beings who live there, freeing them from sorrow and suffering. Their names are:"
To the east, to the south, to the west, to the north, to the sky, and to the earth.
Through the power of this Great Peacock Wisdom King, the Mother of all Buddhas, may I(Name) and all those close to me be protected, and may we be blessed with a full century of life(Stated request).
"Again, Ananda, you should chant the names of the warrior generals, the brothers of the Great King of Knowledge, Vaisravana. They protect all beings, travel through the world to remove disasters, calamities, and sorrows, and bring great benefit. Their names are:"
Indra, Soma, Varuna, Prajapati, Brahma, Narayana, Ishana, Skanda, Kamadeva, Shreshta, Kubaya, Nanda, Kubaya-Ka, Vanimani, Manichara, Pralamba, Pralamanana, Uapamajita, Santagiri, Yamadvata, Purana, Kashmera, Kuvindo, Upalakshya, Ashvapata, Nararaja, Indra-aksha, Pancala-vinda, Sumukhi, Atavi-yaksha, Sadvirijana, Citra-sena, Shvayandava, Triphari, Catul-kandaka, Nigashpti, Svachamatri.
These Yakshas are great commanders of armies, leaders of all spirits, possessing great power, all radiating light, with perfect forms and appearances, renowned far and wide. They are the dharma brothers of Vaisravana, the Heavenly King of Many Hearings. Vaisravana often commands these Yaksha brothers: "If any spirits or ghosts disturb those people, you shall protect them, causing them no trouble or distress, and bring them peace and happiness." Hearing this, the Yakshas faithfully followed the teachings and put them into practice.
These Yaksha generals, through the power of this Great Peacock Wisdom King Buddha-Mother, shall protect me and all my family, granting us a lifespan of one hundred years. If disputes or troubling events arise before me, may the Yaksha generals always safeguard me [Name] and my family, freeing us from sorrow.
Whether we are possessed by devas or nagas, asuras, maruts, garudas, gandharvas, kinnaras, mahoragas, yakshas, or rakshasas; whether we are haunted by pretas, pishachas, bhutas, kumbhandas, putanas, kataputanas, skandas, unmanas, chayas, apasmaras, ustadas, nakshatras, or lepas—whatever spirits or ghosts may possess or haunt us, may the Wisdom King Buddha-Mother always shield me [Name] and my family, freeing us from sorrow and granting us a full lifespan of one hundred years.
There are also various ghosts: those that feed on vital energy, those that feed on fetuses, those that feed on blood, those that feed on flesh, those that feed on fat and marrow, those that feed on raw flesh, those that feed on life force, those that feed on sacrificial offerings, those that feed on breath, those that feed on incense, those that feed on garlands, those that feed on flowers, those that feed on fruit, those that feed on crops, those that feed on fire sacrifices, those that feed on pus, those that feed on feces, those that feed on urine, those that feed on tears and snot, those that feed on saliva, those that feed on nasal mucus, those that feed on leftovers, those that feed on vomit, those that feed on unclean things, those that feed on stagnant water—when such ghosts and spirits cause disturbance and suffering, may the Buddha Mother, the Radiant King, protect me ([Name]) and all my family, freeing us from sorrow and hardship, granting us a full lifespan of one hundred years, allowing us to see one hundred autumns, and constantly enjoy peace and happiness.
If anyone creates curses, poisons, evil prayers, or spells, performing wicked acts such as: *kirṭika*, *karmaṇa*, *kakulinā*, *kīraṇa*, *vaitaraṇa*, *havanāta*, *utkaṭāta*, drinking others' blood and marrow, controlling people like slaves, summoning ghosts and spirits, committing evil deeds, causing harmful eating, harmful vomiting, harmful shadows, harmful glances, writing malicious talismans, performing malicious leaps and jumps, or engaging in malicious ambushes and offenses—when they commit these evil acts, may they all be protected from harming me ([Name]) and my family, freeing us from sorrow and hardship.
There are also various terrors: terror from kings, terror from thieves, terror from water and fire, terror from foreign armies, terror from wicked friends who rob and kill, terror from enemies, terror from famine, terror from untimely death, terror from earthquakes, terror from savage beasts—when such terrors arise, may they all be guarded against for me ([Name]).
Furthermore, all manner of illnesses: scabies, ringworm, eczema, hemorrhoids, abscesses, boils and ulcers; dark and rough skin; indigestion; headaches and migraines; eye, ear, and nose aches; mouth, lip, cheek, tooth, and tongue pains; sore throats; chest, rib, and back pains; heart and stomach aches; lower back and abdominal pains; hip and knee aches; or pains in the four limbs; pains in private parts; emaciation and wasting diseases; pain throughout the entire body—may all such pains be completely eliminated.
Also, all types of malaria: those recurring every one day, two days, three days, four days, up to every seven days, half a month, or a month; or those that come frequently or only last a moment; as well as constant fevers; deviation (stroke) and goiter; fevers caused by demons; ailments of wind, bile, and phlegm; fevers arising from combinations of the three bodily humors; and all the four hundred and four diseases—may all such diseases be completely eradicated.
I now bind and establish this boundary of the earth, this boundary of the cardinal directions. By reciting this scripture, may safety and peace be obtained. Svāhā.
He then spoke a verse, saying:
"May I find peace at night, May I find peace by day, At all times, May the Buddhas keep me in their thoughts."
Next, Ananda, there are twelve great female spirits called Pisacas. You should call out their names. These spirit women always protect the Bodhisattva while he is in the womb, when he is born, and after his birth. Their names are:
Emptyness, Emptiness, Perfect Emptiness, Radiance, Joy, Profound Joy, Joy like the moon, Joyful dancer, Dancer of illusions, The mother of all beginnings, The undivided, The one who cuts through confusion.
"These demon goddesses possess great spiritual power and brilliant light. Their bodies are perfect in form, and their fame spreads everywhere. When the gods and asuras wage war, they display immense might. Through this Great Peacock Wisdom King's sacred mantra, they will protect me ((this person)) and all my family, granting us a lifespan of one hundred years." The mantra is:

manas, being itself. One consciousness arises from suchness. Two, the mind's movement is restless. Three, conditions arise and converge. Four, dependent arising unfolds. Five, grasping attaches to the world. Six, craving burns and clings. Seven, the self clings to its own existence. Eight, the sacred abode of awareness.
"These female spirits possess great spiritual powers, emit magnificent light, have perfect forms and appearances, and are renowned everywhere. When the celestial beings and asuras battle, these spirits display great might. They, too, through this Great Peacock Wisdom King's true mantra, protect me ([Name]) and all my family, granting us a lifespan of one hundred years." The mantra is:

"These rakshasi women possess great spiritual power, emit brilliant light, have perfect form and complexion, and are renowned far and wide. When the gods and asuras are at war, they manifest tremendous might. They, too, will use this Great Mother Peacock Wisdom King mantra to protect me([Name]), along with my family and followers, granting us a lifespan of a hundred years." The mantra is:

Praised be the noble ones, the greatly compassionate ones, the guardians of the world. Praised be the lords of all directions: Indra, the sun and moon, the heavenly bodies, the planets and stars. Praised be all the sages and accomplished ones. Praised be all mothers and goddesses. Praised be all beings, seen and unseen. May all harm be turned away. May peace and protection prevail. These great mantras, true words, great bindings, and great protections can eliminate all evils. May they break every curse and evil deed, may they remove sorcery, black magic, and malicious prayers. May they erase Kṛṣṇa, Kilāṇa, Vetāla, Chidcha, and Pilēśaka. May they remove Skanda, Ūnmāṇa, Chaitya, and Apasmāra. May they cure madness, epilepsy, wasting diseases, leprosy, and scabies. May they banish all kinds of ghosts, demons, and evil beings that feed on humans. May they stop those who drink blood and marrow, who transform people into slaves, who summon spirits, and who commit evil deeds.
May they eliminate all fears: fear of rulers, thieves, water, fire, bad friends, murder, enemies, foreign armies, famine, early death, earthquakes, wild beasts, and all other mortal fears. May they remove bad food, bad vomiting, bad shadows, bad looks, and written curses. May they stop evil jumps, leaps, and acts of rebellion. May they cure all fevers—daily, every two days, three days, four days, up to seven days, half a month, a full month, constant fever, or even momentary fever. May they heal all skin diseases, hemorrhoids, abscesses, goiters, fevers caused by spirits, disorders of wind, bile, phlegm, combined imbalances, and all 404 illnesses.
May they relieve headaches, migraines, indigestion, pain in the eyes, ears, nose, lips, cheeks, teeth, tongue, throat, chest, ribs, back, heart, stomach, waist, abdomen, thighs, knees, the four limbs, private parts, and every part of the body. May they nullify dragon venom, snake venom, poison from herbs, curses, sorcery, and all toxins, so that all are completely destroyed.
When these ghosts, demons, and diseases arise, may they protect me, ([Name]), and all my family, freeing us completely so that we may live a full hundred years.
"Moreover, Ananda, you should recite the names of the dragon kings. These virtuous dragon kings, if their names are spoken, bring great benefit. Their names are:"

These great dragon kings, with their multitudes and retinues, dwell on this great earth. Sometimes they roar, sometimes they emit radiant light, sometimes they send down sweet rain to ripen the crops. They have already seen the Thus-Come One, taken the Three Refuges, and received the training. They have escaped the fear of the golden-winged bird, the fear of hot sand, and the fear of royal service. They constantly support the earth, reside in the great jewel palace, enjoy long lifespans, possess great power, live in wealth and freedom, have countless retinues, are endowed with spiritual powers, can conquer enemies, have great radiance, perfect forms, and widespread renown. When the gods fight the asuras, they lend their mighty power, helping the gods to victory.
May all these dragon kings—their children, grandchildren, brothers, generals, ministers, and servants—also protect me (So-and-So) and my family through the Great Peahen King of Spells, the mother of all Buddhas. May they free us from sorrow and suffering, and grant us a lifespan of a hundred years. Whether I and my family are pure or impure, intoxicated or careless, whether we walk, stand, sit, or lie down, whether we are asleep or awake, may they always support us at all times.
May we be freed from terror caused by gods, dragons, asuras, storm spirits, garudas, gandharvas, kimnaras, mahoragas, yakshas, rakshasas, pretas, pishacas, bhutas, kumbhandas, putanas, kataputanas, skandas, umadas, chayas, apasmaras, and ustakas. May these and all terrors be far away.
Also, may these fears be removed: terror of kings, terror of thieves, terror of water and fire, terror of evil friends, robbers, murderers, and enemies, terror from foreign armies, famine, untimely death, earthquakes, and all ferocious beasts. In all times of fear, may I, (So-and-So), and my family be completely liberated.
Furthermore, the Buddha spoke this verse:
"May I find peace through the night, And be blessed throughout the day. At all times, may the Buddhas Watch over and protect me."
Homage to the Buddha. Homage to the Awakened One. Homage to the Fully Liberated One. Homage to the One of Perfect Peace. Homage to the One of Complete Liberation.
All pure and virtuous Brahmins, who can eliminate all evil deeds— To them I take refuge, to protect myself and my family.
Gods, titans, yakshas, and the like who have come to hear the Dharma, focus your minds, Uphold the Buddha's teachings so they may endure forever; diligently follow the World-Honored One's instructions.
All listeners who have gathered here, whether on the ground or in the sky, Always cultivate kindness toward the world, dwelling in the Dharma day and night.
May all worlds always be peaceful, with boundless merit and wisdom benefiting all beings. May all karmic offenses be eliminated, and all beings depart from suffering and enter Nirvana.
May they constantly anoint their bodies with fragrant incense and always wear the robes of meditative practice to sustain themselves. May the wonderful flowers of enlightenment adorn everything, and wherever they dwell, may they always find peace and joy.

The Buddha declared to Ananda: "The seven Buddhas of the past, who are the perfectly enlightened ones, also rejoiced in proclaiming the Buddha Mother's Great Peacock Wisdom King mantra. You should receive and uphold it. Even the perfectly enlightened Vipashyin Buddha rejoiced in proclaiming this Buddha Mother's Great Peacock Wisdom King mantra, which goes:
Tadyathā: Oṃ aruṇe, kāruṇe, muṇe, mune, dhanine. Āvare, śaavare, ture ture, pure pure, śaavare. Prajña-śaavare, huṃ huṃ huṃ huṃ huṃ. Svāhā.
"Furthermore, Ānanda, the thus-come one, the rightly and fully enlightened one named Śikhin, also joyfully proclaimed this mantra of the Great Peacock Wisdom King:
Tadyathā, Aṭe miṭe, Kule, vikule, Hili, mili, Ketu mūle, Ambale, ambale vate, Nume nume, Hili hili, Kuṭi kuṭi, Muṭi muṭi, Svāhā.
"Moreover, Ananda, the Fully Enlightened One, the Tathagata Vishvabhu, also joyfully proclaimed this Great Peacock Wisdom King's Dharani:
Tadyathā, om muri muri, ke pāti, māni māni ti ke, hare hare, khāre, gāre, phare, phari, phari ṇ ṇānti, nānti ṇi, nānti ri, śāke ca māke ca, nāni, nāni ṇi, śiri śiri, śiri śiri, svāhā.
Furthermore, Ananda, the thus-come one known as Krakucchanda, the perfectly enlightened one, also joyfully proclaimed the great mantra of the Peacock King Buddha-Mother:
Tadyathā: Hiṇi, miṇi, kuṇi, muṇi, tuṇi. An-nāṇ-dhi, nan-dhi-lī, śokari, chokari. Tāgari, dāgari, keñ-cha-ni, keñ-cha-nā-vati. Vāri vāri, vāri vāri. Nāndi siddhi, svāhā.
Moreover, Ananda, the Thus-Come One, the Fully Enlightened One, Krakucchanda, also joyfully proclaimed this Dharani of the Great Peacock Wisdom Queen:

Ānanda! I, Śākyamuni, the Tathāgata, the Perfectly Enlightened One, also joyfully proclaim this Great Peacock Wisdom King Mantra for the benefit of all sentient beings. The mantra is:
Tadyathā: Hili mili, kili mili, ili li, kātali, ketuvali, anāmali, napi nepī, masarāgi, masasti, trāghanē, kāmali, kamundari, trulu trulu, varani, prākridinēshthi, miritari, itihāse, ajaali, dutari, vakili, vaji vajiti kē, tsātamvai (when praying for rain: varāśa tu divā), (when praying for calamities or wishes: siddhi mamtāra padana), namo bhagavatu, Iri jāyayē, gunu sikāyē, blim gālikāyē, aruśi, nāruśi, nati, nati vajrī, nada vajrī, unāyāna pirīyē, alātāri, kulatayā, nārayāni, paśani, sva paśani, siddhi ntu, narāmina, mantrā padana, svāhā.
"Ananda, I have already taught you to uphold and practice the Dharma of the Great Peacock Wisdom King, the Buddha-Mother, to rescue the monk Sāti from the peril of snake venom, granting that monk safety and peace. Likewise, If any being recites, upholds, and practices this scripture, they will attain great peace and joy, live a full lifespan of one hundred years, and see all their wishes fulfilled, just as I have explained before.
Additionally, Ananda, the Bodhisattva Maitreya also joyfully proclaimed this Great Mother Peacock Wisdom King's sacred mantra:
tadyathā om̐ śrī śrī śrī bhadre rute rute rute bhadre hare hare hariṇi nānte śvāre śveta śūrā pāṇiṇi o̐ mī o̐ mī o̐ mī bodhi bodhi sattve bodhi paripūraṇi svāhā
Ananda! The Great Brahma King, Lord of the Saha World, joyfully proclaimed this mantra of the Great Peacock Wisdom King, the Buddha-Mother:
They are thus: Hri hri, Mri mri, Mari Nitsangkari, Kiri kiri, Kiri kiri, Kiri kiri ti, Brahmanay, Kurantiki, Vinahas prasai, Dhara dhara, Hara hara, Puru puru, Puru puru Svaha.
"Ananda! This mantra can eliminate all evil poisons and remove all types of venomous harm. The power of the Buddha removes poison; the power of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva removes poison; the power of the Pratyekabuddha removes poison; the power of the Arhat removes poison; the power of the holy ones in the three fruits and four paths removes poison; the power of one who speaks truthfully removes poison; the power of Brahma's staff removes poison; the power of Indra's vajra removes poison; the power of Vishnu's discus removes poison; the power of Agni's burning removes poison; the power of Varuna's noose removes poison; the power of the Asura illusionist removes poison; the power of the Dragon King's wisdom removes poison; the power of Rudra's trident removes poison; the power of Skanda's spear removes poison. The great Peacock Wisdom King, Mother of the Buddhas, has the power to remove all poisons, causing poison to sink into the earth, granting peace and safety to me ([Name]) and all my family."
Ānanda! There are also all kinds of poisonous creatures. You should invoke their names: the poison of Baza snake, the poison of Haluoluo, the poison of Jialuoju, the poison of fangs, the poison of stings, the poison of roots, the poison of powders, the poison of suspicion, the poison of eyes, the poison of lightning, the poison of clouds, the poison of snakes, the poison of dragons, the poison of sorcery, the poison of spirits, all rat poisons, spider poison, elephant poison, toad poison, fly poison, bee poison, human poison, non-human poison, medicinal poison, and curse poison. May all such poisons be removed and eliminated. May [this person] and all their family be freed from all poisons, attain peace and security, live a full life of one hundred years, and see one hundred autumns.
Ānanda! Lord Śakra also joyfully proclaimed this mantra of the Great Peacock Wisdom King:
Namate. One: if one practices the path, two: through the practice of discipline, three: through the practice of meditation, four: through the practice of wisdom, five: through the practice of diligence, six: through the practice of patience, seven: through the practice of truthfulness, eight: through the practice of loving-kindness, nine: through the practice of compassion, ten: through the practice of sympathetic joy, eleven: through the practice of equanimity, twelve: through the practice of impermanence, thirteen: through the practice of freedom from attachment, fourteen: joy, joy, joy, joy, joy. Fifteen: in the community of practitioners, sixteen: the earth, seventeen: the earth, eighteen: the guide, the guide, nineteen: the radiance, twenty: the strength, the strength, the power, twenty-one: the swift, the swift, the power, twenty-two: the persistence, the persistence, twenty-three: the kalpa, twenty-four: the kalpa's root, twenty-five: the offering and the protection, twenty-six: all those who are not at peace, twenty-seven: and those who oppose peace, twenty-eight: on the other path, I shall cause the light to enter, twenty-nine: with steadfast wisdom, thirty: with resolute wisdom, thirty-one: I shall fill the world with the sound of the dharma, thirty-two: to those who sincerely seek the path, thirty-three: the vision, the enlightenment, the power, thirty-four: the victory, thirty-five: the lord of the shining ones, the power, thirty-six: the diamond, the diamond, thirty-seven: the diamond, thirty-eight: the diamond, the diamond, thirty-nine: the diamond's power, forty: the perfect union, the sacrifice.
Ānanda! The Four Great Heavenly Kings also rejoice in proclaiming this Dharani of the Great Peacock Wisdom King Mother of the Buddhas:
Tadyathā: Oṃ Jvala jvala, Dapa dapa, Dhama dhama, Sara saraṇa, Kuṭi kuṭi, Muṭi muṭi, Miṭi miṭi, Sara sara, Hara hara, Trā trā, Na na na na na, Va va va va va, Hala hala hala hala hala, Siddhi siddhi siddhi siddhi siddhi, Svā svāti svā svāti svā svāti svā svāti svā svāti svāhā.
"May I, [name], along with all my loved ones, be completely free from harm by messengers of ghosts, messengers of Yama, the dark mother night, and those who hold the black lasso. May we be free from punishment by the King of Death, Brahma, Indra, sages, all gods, dragons, asuras, Maruts, Garudas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, Mahoragas, yakshas, rakshasas, hungry ghosts, demons of filth, all spirits, Kumbhanda demons, putana demons, Kataputana demons, Skanda demons, unmada demons, chaya demons, apasmara demons, ustaraka ghosts, vetada ghosts, and free from punishment by rulers, thieves, water, fire, and from all forms of reprimand, even minor ones. May I, [name], and all my loved ones, be kept far away from these, always be protected, and live to a full life of a hundred years, seeing each of the hundred autumns."
"Ānanda! You should recite the names of the great river kings, which are:"
King Ganga, King Sindhu, King Vakshu, King Shita, King Sharapu, King Arravati, King Yamin, King Guha, King Vetravati, King Shatadru, King Vipasha, King Irawati, King Chandrabhaga, King Sarasvati, King Gagani, King Upayavati, King Kavir, King Tamsavrapana, King Madumati, King Ekavati, King Gumati, King Nandana, King Saumya, King Vishvamitra, King Amara, King Tamara, King Panjara, King Susvastu, King Pravandanika, King Daputa, King Vimara, King Gunavati, King Nairanjana, King Hiranyavati.
Thus, all these great river kings dwell in dependence on this great earth. In the domains of these river kings, there abide beings such as devas, dragons, asuras, maruts, garudas, gandharvas, kinnaras, mahoragas, as well as yakshas, rakshasas, pretas, pishachas, bhutas, kumbhandas, putanas, kataputanas, skandas, unmadas, chayas, apasmaras, ustatarakas. Also present are those who feed on vital energy, those who feed on embryos, those who feed on blood, those who feed on flesh, those who feed on fat, those who feed on marrow, those who feed on the newborn, those who feed on life force, those who feed on sacrificial offerings, those who feed on breath, those who feed on incense, those who feed on garlands, those who feed on flowers, those who feed on fruit, those who feed on grain, those who feed on fire sacrifices, those who feed on pus, those who feed on feces, those who feed on urine, those who feed on tears and saliva, those who feed on phlegm, those who feed on nasal discharge, those who feed on leftovers, those who feed on vomit, those who feed on impure substances, and those who feed on stagnant water.
"Thus, these various spirits and ghosts, with their different forms and colors, who can transform themselves according to their desires, dwell by that river. May they also protect me ([Name]) and my loved ones through the power of this Great Peacock Wisdom King Mother. May we be free from worry and suffering, live to a hundred years, and always enjoy peace and happiness."
"Ananda, you should recite the names of the great mountain kings. They are called:"
King Excellent Majesty Mountain, King Snow Mountain, King Fragrance Intoxicating Mountain, King Hundred Peaks Mountain, King Khaḍiraka Mountain, King Golden Rib Mountain, King Holding Light Mountain, King Nimindhara Mountain, King Circular Enclosure Mountain, King Great Circular Enclosure Mountain, King Indra's Stone Mountain, King Brahma's Abode Mountain, King Auspicious Mountain, King Beautiful Manifestation Mountain, King Vast Great Mountain, King Gem-Producing Mountain, King Many Insects Mountain, King Jewel Summit Mountain, King Diamond-Producing Mountain, King Asura Rock Mountain, King Bhīmavikrama Mountain, King Lightning Mountain, King Horse Milk Mountain, King Moonlight Mountain, King Sunlight Mountain, King Malayagiri Mountain, King Vindhya Mountain, King Virtuous Stone Mountain, King Citrakūṭa Mountain, King Golden Peak Mountain, King Pāriyātra Mountain, King Wonderful Arm Mountain, King Mani-Bearing Mountain, King Superior Shining Mountain, King Brahma Beak Mountain, King Pure Wisdom Mountain, King Ox Ear Mountain, King Makaṁa Mountain, King Sword Form Mountain, King Scorching Hot Mountain, King Collyrium Mountain, King Accumulation Mountain, King Deer Colored Mountain, King Dada Mountain, King Kailasa Mountain, King Great Sovereign Mountain.
Such great mountain kings, abiding on this great earth. Upon those mountains dwell all devas, nagas, asuras, maruts, garudas, gandharvas, kinnaras, mahoragas, yakshas, rakshasas, pretas, pishachas, bhutas, kumbhandas, putanas, kataputanas, skandhas, unmadas, chayas, apasmaras, utpatakas—all spirits and ghostly beings—as well as great sages who uphold dharanis, together with their retinues. May they all, through this Mother of Buddhas, the Great Peacock Wisdom King, protect me ((So-and-so)) and my followers, granting a hundred years of life, averting misfortunes, always bringing auspiciousness, and freeing us from all sorrow and distress. Furthermore, a verse is spoken:
"Grant me peace at night, And peace throughout the day. At all times, in every way, May all Buddhas always protect and think of me."
"Ānanda, you should call upon the names of the astral deities. These astral deities possess great power, constantly traverse the sky, and manifest signs of fortune and misfortune. Their names are:
The Pleiades and Orion's stars, The Hyades, and the Well-star too— The Ghost-star brings auspicious signs, With the Willow-star as number seven.
"These seven constellations reside at the eastern gate, guarding the east. Through the power of this Great Peacock Wisdom Queen Mother, may they constantly protect me (so-and-so) and all my family, granting a lifespan of one hundred years, free from all sorrow and affliction."
The stars and constellations can defeat enemies, the Wings and Wings* are just as able; the Chariot, the Horn, the Neck,* and the Root star comes seventh.
(*Note: "Wings" and "Wings" refers to two similar-sounding constellations. The specific star names are transliterated for accuracy.)
"These seven constellations reside at the southern gate, protecting the south. Through this Great Peacock Wisdom King—the Mother of all Buddhas—may they always protect me ([Name]), together with my family and companions, granting a hundred years of life and freedom from all sorrow and distress."
"The great majestic star Fang, The heart and tail stars are the same, The Winnowing Star, Dipper, Ox, And the Weaving Maiden is the seventh star in turn."
These seven constellations dwell at the Western Gate, guarding the West. And they, through the Great Peacock Wisdom King, the Buddha-Mother, shall always protect me ([Name]) and all my loved ones, granting a hundred years of life, free from all worry and sorrow.
"Ghost Star and Danger Star, House Star and Wall Star, and others, Asterism Star and Harvester Star, Stomach Star comes last of all."
These seven constellations dwell at the northern gate, guarding the north. They too, through this Great Peacock Wisdom King Buddha-Mother, constantly protect me(So-and-so), along with my family and followers, granting a lifespan of one hundred years, and freedom from all sorrow and affliction.
Ananda, you should recite the names of the nine celestial rulers. As these ruler-stars travel through the twenty-eight lunar mansions, they cause the length of day and night to increase or decrease. All abundance, scarcity, suffering, and joy in the world are first signaled by their signs. Their names are:
The sun, the moon, and fiery Mars, With Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus's stars, Saturn, Rahu, and comets' glance— These are known as the Wandering Stars.
"These nine luminaries possess great power and can indicate fortune and misfortune. May they, by virtue of this Buddha-Mother Great Peacock Wisdom King, always protect me([Name]) and my family, granting us a lifespan of a hundred years, free from all sorrow and affliction. Let us also praise the constellations through this verse:
With twenty-eight stars in the sky, Seven in each of the four directions, Along with seven visible planets, Adding the sun and moon—that makes nine; All together, thirty-seven celestial bodies, Mighty and awe-inspiring in their power. They rise and set, illuminating the world, Revealing signs of good and evil, Causing day and night to wax and wane, Radiating great light and presence. With a pure heart, One takes joy in this clear understanding.
These celestial constellations, through the power of the Great Peacock Wisdom King, the Buddha-Mother, constantly protect and guard me (So-and-so), along with all my family, granting us a lifespan of one hundred years.
Ānanda, you should recite the names of the great sages. These sages all uphold perfect precepts, constantly practice asceticism, are endowed with majestic virtue, and possess great radiance. Some dwell in mountains and rivers, some reside in forests and marshes. Whether they wish to do good or evil, or make blessings or curses about fortune or misfortune, whatever they speak is fulfilled. They possess the five supernormal powers, move freely, travel through the sky, and all their actions are without hindrance. You should recite their names:
Aṣṭaka the Great Sage, Vāmaka the Great Sage, Vāmadeva the Great Sage, Marīci the Great Sage, Maitrāyaṇī the Great Sage, Viśvāmitra the Great Sage, Vasiṣṭha the Great Sage, Bhāradvāja the Great Sage, Kaśyapa the Great Sage, Old Kaśyapa the Great Sage, Brghu the Great Sage, Bṛhaspati the Great Sage, Aṅgiras the Great Sage, Bhṛgu the Great Sage, Atri the Great Sage, Pulastya the Great Sage, Deer-Head the Great Sage, Yama-Fire the Great Sage, Island-Son the Great Sage, Black-Island-Son the Great Sage, Hari the Great Sage, Hari-Son the Great Sage, Equal-Voice the Great Sage, High-Courage the Great Sage, High-Courage the Great Sage, Patience-Talker the Great Sage, Reputation the Great Sage, Good-Reputation the Great Sage, Respected the Great Sage, Yellow the Great Sage, Potalaka the Great Sage, Aśvalāyana the Great Sage, Fragrant-Mountain the Great Sage, Snow-Mountain the Great Sage, Red-Eye the Great Sage, Hard-to-Live-In the Great Sage, Vaiśampāyana the Great Sage, Vālmīki the Great Sage, Generous-Giver the Great Sage, Nāmasya the Great Sage, Śarabhāṅga the Great Sage, Manu the Great Sage, Master the Great Sage, Indra the Great Sage, Jupiter-Star the Great Sage, Shining the Great Sage, Parrot the Great Sage, Ārāṇemi the Great Sage, Saturn-Star the Great Sage, Mercury-Star the Great Sage, Poison-Holder the Great Sage, Gandhara the Great Sage, One-Horn the Great Sage, Sage-Horn the Great Sage, Gaya the Great Sage, Daṇḍāyana the Great Sage, Kaṇḍāyana the Great Sage, Smoke-Top the Great Sage, Fearful the Great Sage, Kapila the Great Sage, Gautama the Great Sage, Mātaṅga the Great Sage, Red-Eye the Great Sage, Wonderful-Eye the Great Sage, Naradattā the Great Sage, Mountain-Dweller the Great Sage, Kṛmira the Great Sage.
"All these celestial beings are great sages of ancient times, who composed the Four Vedas. They are well-versed in spiritual mantras, have perfected their practices, and bring benefit to themselves and others. They also, through this Great Peacock Wisdom King, the Mother of all Buddhas, protect me, ([Name]), and my family and followers, granting us a lifespan of a hundred years, free from all sorrow and affliction." Then he spoke the mantra:
Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammasambuddhassa (Take refuge in the Blessed One, the Worthy One, the Fully Enlightened One)
Thus it is: Hiri hiri, hiri khari, mari huri, suri hari, hiri hiri, mili mili, rap rap, narap, gur sani, mathani, nohani, gatani, pazani, pazani, patani, tapani, hanani, nahani, naha naha naha, nara nara narani, patani, rahani, mohani, bam bani, saba sani svaha.
Ananda! You should recite the name of the great poison that lies within this earth. Its name is:
Aṇara (1), Sampara (2), Kāra-la (3), Keyū-ra (4), Bud-dhoga-ma (5), Bu-dda-patī (6), Mīnu-patī (7), Sirī-patī (8), Teja-patī (9), Tejog-ra-patī (10), Yaśu-patī (11), Yaśog-ra-patī (12), Āraṇa (13), Dā-raṇa (14), Āran (15), Tra-na (16), Nānta-noha (17), Jīha-jīta (18), Bhrāgu-gula (19), Cira-nantura (20), Iri-kicika (21), Śa-cutra (22), Vipulī (23), Nākuri (24), Kiri-bī (25), Trang-gariṣta (26), Am-mumatī (27), Sam-mumatī (28), Ma-mamatī (29), Kāmalī (30), Vimalī (31), Kuṇḍalī (32), Aś-tuhī (33), Vākī (34), Vāka-na-tī (35), Vāna-na-bhī (36), Mahā-galī (37), Tu-lamī (38), Su-lamī (39).
Ānanda! May this great poison and all the poison deities, through the power of the Buddha-Mother Great Peacock Wisdom King, protect me ([your name]) and my entire family, granting us a full hundred years of life and freeing us from all harm and poisoning.
"Moreover, Ananda, this Great Peacock Wisdom Queen Sutra was proclaimed by the seven Buddhas, the Perfectly Enlightened Thus-Come Ones. They are: Vipashyin, Shikhin, Vishvabhu, Krakucchanda, Kanakamuni, Kashyapa, and I myself, Shakyamuni, the Perfectly Enlightened One. Together we have joyfully proclaimed this Great Peacock Wisdom Queen Sutra.
The Bodhisattva Maitreya also joyfully proclaimed it. The great Brahma King, ruler of the Sahā world, along with Indra, the Four Great Heavenly Kings—Dhṛtarāṣṭra, king of the Gandharvas; Virūḍhaka, king of the Kumbhāṇḍas; Virūpākṣa, king of the Nāgas; and Vaiśravaṇa, king of the Yakṣas—together with the twenty-eight great Yakṣa generals, all joyfully proclaimed this Great Peacock Wisdom Queen mantra.
The great general Sāṃkāra, Hārītī the mother, her five hundred children, and their retinues also joyfully proclaimed it. Ananda, no one can defy this Great Peacock Wisdom Queen mantra—not gods, nāgas, asuras, maruts, garudas, gandharvas, kinnaras, or mahoragas. Nor can yakṣas, rākṣasas, pretas, piśācas, bhūtas, kumbhāṇḍas, pūtanas, kaṭapūtanas, skandas, unmādas, chāyas, apasmāras, uṣṭārakas, or any other ghosts or spirits defy it.
Furthermore, all evil beings who feed on essences—those who consume vital energies, embryos, blood, flesh, fat, marrow, raw flesh, life force, sacrificial offerings, breath, incense, garlands, flowers, fruits, crops, fire offerings, pus, feces, urine, mucus, saliva, nasal mucus, leftover food, vomit, impure substances, or leaking water—none of them can defy this Great Peacock Wisdom Queen.
Also, all forms of sorcery, black magic, curses, and evil spells—such as kīlakas, karmaṇas, kākulīnas, kirāṇas, vetālas, or any other malicious practitioners—cannot defy it. Neither can those who drink others' blood and marrow, enslave people, summon ghosts, perform evil deeds, or engage in harmful acts like vomiting, casting bad shadows or evil glances, writing hateful letters, leaping wildly, turning things upside down, or carrying out other wicked deeds. None can defy this Great Peacock Wisdom Queen.
Furthermore, kings, thieves, floods, fires, enemy armies, famines, untimely death, earthquakes, wild beasts, adversaries, and evil companions—none of these can defy it; they will all be kept far away.
And all evil diseases—skin eruptions, ringworm, hemorrhoids, abscesses, rough dark skin, indigestion, headaches, migraines, pain in the eyes, ears, nose, lips, mouth, cheeks, teeth, tongue, throat, chest, ribs, back, heart, stomach, waist, hips, spleen, knees, hands, feet, limbs, and private parts; wasting diseases, emaciation, and whole-body pain—none of these can defy it; they will all be kept at bay.
As for all fevers—those recurring every one, two, three, four, up to seven days; those lasting half a month, a month, or even daily; constant fevers, goiters, ghost fevers, wind, bile, and phlegm imbalances, or diseases of the three humors, and all the four hundred and four kinds of illness—none can defy this Great Peacock Wisdom Queen."
Ānanda! All ghosts, spirits, non-human beings, every kind of harmful poison, inauspiciousness, terrible diseases, all demons and spirits along with their messengers, enemies, terrors, all sorts of poisons, as well as spells and all evil prayers—none of these can violate the Great Māyūrī Buddha-Mother Wisdom King. Those who rely on it will always be free from all good and bad karma, attain great auspiciousness, receive the blessings of all saints, and have all their wishes fulfilled.
"Moreover, Ananda, if someone merely recites the name of this Great Peacock Buddha-Mother Wisdom King, they will protect both themselves and others. If they tie a knotted cord and wear it on their body, then even if that person deserves the death penalty, they will be released upon paying a fine; if they deserve a fine, they will be released after a light beating; if they deserve a light beating, they will be released with just a scolding; and if they deserve a scolding, they will be naturally released. All hardships and calamities will completely vanish. Such a person will also not be harmed by kings, thieves, water, fire, poison, weapons, or clubs. No human, heavenly being, ghost, or spirit will dare to oppose them. They will sleep peacefully, wake peacefully, be free from all terror, increase their merit, and prolong their life."
Ānanda! For those who read and recite this sutra, it will certainly bring results, except for those who are fated to receive the unavoidable retribution of past fixed karma.
"Ananda, during times of drought or excessive rain, if you recite this sutra, all dragons will be delighted. The downpour will cease if there is flooding, and rain will surely fall if there is drought. Whatever they seek will be granted according to their wishes."
"Ananda! This Great Peacock Wisdom King, the Mother of all Buddhas, can banish fear, enemies, and all calamities for those who simply recall it in their minds. How much more so for those who thoroughly recite, study, and uphold it—they will surely attain peace and happiness."
Ananda, this Mahamayuri Buddha-Mother Wisdom King has the power to dispel calamities and pacify enemies. It is taught in order to protect the fourfold assembly—monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen—and to free them from all fear and danger. Then he spoke the dharani:
Tadyathā(1) Yavatī(2) Dhāni(3) Dharagi(4) Kuruturumī(5) Svāhā(6)
Greed, anger, and ignorance — These three poisons plague the world. The Buddhas have all cut them off; By this true word, may poison be removed.

May we, together with our families, Always be free from harm and danger. May the Buddha-Mother, the Bright King, Bring safety and peace to all.
At that time, the venerable Ananda, having heard the Buddha teach this sutra, bowed at the Buddha's feet, circumambulated to the right three times, and then, following the Buddha's instruction, went to the bhikkhu Shadi. There, he used this Great Peacock Bright King Method of the Buddha Mother to offer protection for that bhikkhu. He established boundaries on the ground and boundaries in the four directions, providing aid and relief, removing his suffering and distress.
At that moment, the bhikkhu Shadi's poison and torment dissipated. His body became calm and secure, and he rose from the ground. Together with the venerable Ananda, he went to the Buddha. After bowing at the Buddha's feet, they stood to one side.
At that time, the World-Honored One said to Ananda: "Because of this, you should widely announce to the fourfold assembly—monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen—as well as to kings, ministers, and all people of the world. Urge them to sincerely receive and uphold this teaching, to explain it to others, to copy this scripture, to circulate it everywhere, and to decorate it with reverence. Build an altar, and with offerings of incense, flowers, and food according to your means, make offerings. May all living beings be freed from all worry and distress, gain boundless merit, always find peace and happiness, and live a full lifespan of one hundred years."
At that time, after the World-Honored One had spoken this sutra, humans, gods, yakshas, and all kinds of spirits—having received the Buddha’s command and not daring to disobey—all developed compassionate hearts and pledged to protect those who uphold the sutra.
Then the venerable Ananda, along with the great assembly—including devas, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, maruts, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans—upon hearing what the Buddha had taught, were all filled with great joy, received it faithfully, and put it into practice.
Devas, asuras, yakshas, and other beings, Come listen to the Dharma with sincere hearts. Protect the Buddha's teachings so they may long endure— Each of you, diligently follow the World-Honored One's guidance.
All listeners who gather here, Whether on the ground or dwelling in the sky, Always cultivate loving-kindness toward the human realm, Abiding in the Dharma day and night, within your own lives.
May all worlds always remain peaceful and secure, May boundless merit and wisdom benefit all beings. May every misdeed be completely dissolved, Far from all suffering, we return to perfect peace.
Let the fragrance of ethical precepts perfume your being, And the robe of meditative concentration nourish your life. With the beautiful flowers of enlightenment adorning all, Wherever you dwell, may you find lasting happiness.
