The Vajra of Great Bliss, the Unfailing True Samaya Sutra: An Exegesis on the Principle of Prajñāpāramitā is a Buddhist tantric scripture translated by the eminent monk Amoghavajra of the Tang Dynasty, belonging to the important exegetical works of the *Principle Sutra*. Amoghavajra was one of the representative figures of Tantric Buddhism in the Tang Dynasty, known together with Śubhakarasiṃha and Vajrabodhi as the Three Great Masters of the Kaiyuan Era, exerting a profound influence on the development of Esoteric Buddhism in China. This sutra expounds the profound principle of Prajñāpāramitā, integrating exoteric and esoteric teachings, with a focus on revealing the non-dual relationship between great bliss and emptiness, emphasizing the tantric concept of attaining buddhahood in this very body. The text systematically interprets the meaning of the seventeen pure phrases, providing a theoretical foundation for tantric practice. It holds a lofty position within the Tang and Eastern esoteric traditions and serves as a crucial document for the study of tantric philosophy and practice.

"Thus have I heard" — "Thus" refers to the scriptures as compiled at the time of the council. "I heard" indicates that it was personally heard from the Buddha. "At one time" refers to the occasion when the sutra was taught, when the earth shook in six ways or celestial flowers rained down, phenomena absent at other times. It is also called "one time" when disciples of all three vehicles attain noble fruits. "Bhagavan" means the one who conquers, specifically the conqueror of the four demons. It also carries six meanings as explained in linguistic treatises: radiance, sovereignty, dignity, and so forth. "Achieving excellence" refers to Vairocana's self-realized noble wisdom. "All Tathagatas" refers, according to the Yoga teachings, to the five Buddhas, which are the inexhaustible and boundless assembly of Buddhas filling all space and the entire dharma realm, embodied in these five forms. "Vajra empowerment" signifies the Tathagata's ten true suchnesses, ten dharma realms, and ten Tathagata stages, forming the upper and lower ten-peaked vajra great emptiness wisdom. "Empowerment" indicates that from the Tathagata's middle way, the wisdom of the sixteen great bodhisattvas, beginning with Samantabhadra, flows forth sequentially, together constituting thirty-seven stations, completing the great mandala of liberation. "Samaya wisdom" means vow, also the mandala — ensuring that future practitioners of the supreme vehicle do not rely solely on themselves without receiving from a teacher. Thus it is understood that those cultivating the supreme vehicle must first receive the samaya from a teacher before practicing. "Having received the crowning empowerment of all Tathagatas as lord of the three realms" — the Tathagata, in his causal stage, entered the samaya wisdom mandala through an empowering master. The acharya empowers the disciple's inherent Tathagata nature within the body, bestowing vajra empowerment to make them a vessel for true mantra practitioners, capable of undertaking mantra practices and receiving successive stages of empowerment up to transmission and recognition. This serves as the initial cause, and through the correspondence of three secrets and four wisdom seals, culminates in the fruit of supreme dharmaraja of the three realms. "Having realized the yoga mastery of all Tathagatas' all-knowing wisdom" — "having realized all Tathagatas" refers to the five Buddhas mentioned above. "All-knowing wisdom" is the wisdom realized solely by the Buddha, all attained through yoga practice, achieving mastery over the dharma. "Able to perform all mudras of all Tathagatas" refers to the four wisdom seals. "Perfect in various deeds and all intentions for the boundless and inexhaustible realm of all beings" — "able to perform" arises from mastering yoga. "All Tathagatas," the five Buddhas, are as explained before. Each Buddha possesses the wisdom of universal karmic activity with all seals, extending to all boundless Buddha realms and beings, performing all kinds of beneficial deeds, ultimately bringing peace and happiness to all beings, each achieving the nine grades of accomplishment. "Constant throughout all times of the three periods" — this is the body, speech, and mind vajra, the great Vairocana Tathagata. "Constant" signifies the Tathagata's pure dharma realm wisdom, inherent since beginningless time — undiminished amid afflictions, unenhanced when aligned with pure dharmas. "Three periods" are past, future, and present. "All times" refers both to when beings are ordinary and after they attain noble fruits — the three karmas remain pure like empty space, untainted by afflictions arising from false discrimination. "Vajra" signifies attaining mastery over all dharmas at the Buddha ground. Having realized the vajra of body, speech, and mind, one cultivates the path in the alaya consciousness; since afflictive habits are as hard as vajra and difficult to break, one uses the great empty vajra wisdom samadhi to realize the dharma body's radiant light pervading everywhere — Vairocana Tathagata.

The scripture states: "In the palace of the King of the Paranirmita-Vaśavartin Heaven, within the realm of desire, is the dwelling place where all Thus-Gone Ones forever abide. It is the great jeweled hall of auspicious praise, adorned with various interwoven bells, streamers, and banners that gently sway and chime in the breeze, embellished with pearl garlands, necklaces, and ornaments shaped like half-moons and full moons."

The Palace of the Paranirmita-Vaśavartin Heaven is known as the summit of the desire realm, the palace of its celestial king. A bodhisattva who has attained the sixth ground—the ground of manifest presence—abides in the contemplation of perfect wisdom and often serves as the king of this heavenly assembly, teaching the perfection of wisdom to gods and humans. In this heaven, the pleasures of the five senses surpass those of all other celestial realms. Therefore, Vairocana Buddha, for the sake of Vajrasattva, proclaimed the great bliss and profound craving-taint, blessing the swift realization of the yoga of suchness. By hearing this teaching, beings are no longer defiled by the mundane impurities and afflictions of the world, and they transcend the realm of Māra.

This palace is the great mandala of the Adamantine Being of great bliss and non-emptiness, born entirely from the merit-store of Vairocana Buddha. It is a precious tower of vajra peaks, formed of five supreme vajra gems. The mandala is square, with eight pillars arranged in eight stations. At the center of the four gates resides the inner wisdom of the universally illuminating Thus-Gone One, which is liberation itself. These eight stations will be explained later.

The sutra says: "He was accompanied by eighty kotis of Bodhisattvas, namely: Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Ākāśagarbha Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Vajramuṣṭi Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Cittotpādadharmacakrapravartana Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Ākāśakośa Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, and Sarvamāra'pramardinī Bodhisattva Mahāsattva. Surrounded respectfully by such great Bodhisattvas, he taught the Dharma."

Each Bodhisattva had a retinue of ten kotis of the same spiritual family.

Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva sits in the moon disc before Vairocana, embodying the awakening mind of all Tathāgatas. When one first gives rise to the awakening mind, through the empowerment of Vajrasattva, they cultivate and realize Samantabhadra's practices and vows, and attain the state of a Tathāgata.

Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva sits in the moon disc behind Vairocana, embodying the great compassion of all Tathāgatas. Following conditions through the six realms of rebirth, he rescues all beings from the suffering of birth and death, defilement, and affliction. He swiftly attains pure samādhi, neither clinging to samsara nor grasping at nirvāṇa. This is all realized through Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva's vajra dharma.

Ākāśagarbha Bodhisattva sits in the moon disc to the right of Vairocana, embodying the thusness and countless merits of all Tathāgatas—the accumulation of merit as provision for enlightenment. By cultivating Ākāśagarbha Bodhisattva's practice and performing the four kinds of giving (to be explained later), one's three spheres of action become pure, like space itself. This creates the inexhaustible provision for the enjoyment and transformation bodies in conditioned yet undefiled form.

Vajramuṣṭi Bodhisattva sits in the moon disc to the left of Vairocana, embodying the three secrets of all Tathāgatas held in the palm of Vajramuṣṭi. Practitioners of mantra who have entered the mandala and received empowerment hear the secret teachings of the Tathāgata's three actions. Through cultivation, they attain supreme accomplishments both worldly and transcendent, purify the ten unwholesome deeds accumulated since beginningless time, and realize unobstructed ultimate wisdom.

Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva sits in the moon disc in the southeast corner, embodying the wisdom sword of prajñāpāramitā of all Tathāgatas. Dwelling in the three gates of liberation, he reveals the true suchness of the dharma body—permanence, bliss, self, and purity. By realizing this wisdom, a bodhisattva becomes a fully enlightened one.

Cittotpādadharmacakrapravartana Bodhisattva sits in the moon disc in the southwest corner, embodying the four kinds of wheels of all Tathāgatas: the vajra realm wheel, the subjugating three realms wheel, the universal taming wheel, and the all-achieving purpose wheel. Practitioners of mantra who enter these wheels, through the four kinds of wisdom seals, accomplish the sixteen great bodhisattva births and attain supreme enlightenment.

Ākāśakośa Bodhisattva sits in the northwest corner, embodying the vast offering ceremonies of all Tathāgatas. Practitioners of mantra who cultivate the yogic samādhi of Ākāśakośa Bodhisattva, in a single moment, manifest before every Buddha throughout space and the entire dharma realm. In great assemblies, they offer clouds of various offerings to the Tathāgatas. They then hear the wonderful Dharma from all Buddhas and swiftly complete the provisions of merit and wisdom. With space as their treasury, they follow conditions to rescue and benefit all beings in every realm, skillfully guiding them step by step toward supreme enlightenment.

Sarvamāra'pramardinī Bodhisattva sits in the northeast corner, embodying the great compassion and skillful means of all Tathāgatas. Outwardly appearing wrathful, inwardly harboring compassion, he dwells in the stage of application, protecting practitioners and removing all obstacles. When enlightenment is attained, he subdues Māra, Maheśvara, and all difficult beings, leading them to receive teachings and guiding them to supreme enlightenment. Through wrathful wisdom, he accomplishes the ultimate goal.

The eight great Bodhisattvas explained above encompass three types of dharmas: the awakening mind, great compassion, and skillful means. These Bodhisattvas include all the mantra methods of Buddhism and all the exoteric Great Vehicle teachings. Such great Bodhisattva assemblies surround respectfully.

The eight offering goddesses and the four gate bodhisattvas represent the retinue of the Tathāgata's samādhi.

The sutra says, "The teaching is good in the beginning, middle, and end." What is this teaching? It is the profound wisdom of all great bodhisattvas. "Good in the beginning" refers to the body secrets of all Tathagatas—all mudras and the dignified manner of their physical presence. "Good in the middle" refers to the speech secrets of all Tathagatas—the mantras and dharani, the royal decrees of the Dharma King that must not be violated. "Good in the end" refers to the yoga of the principal deity—all states of meditative absorption and the countless wisdom liberations.

Another interpretation: "Good in the beginning" is the training in higher moral discipline; "Good in the middle" is the training in higher meditation; "Good in the end" is the training in higher wisdom.

"Skillful in wording and meaning"—the skillful wording, based on sound and grammar, is elegant and refined, possessing the sixty-four kinds of Brahmic tones. The skillful meaning is based on the two truths: the conventional truth and the ultimate truth.

"Purely unified" indicates that the yoga of the Tathagata is not shared with the three vehicles, for it alone is the Buddha's ultimate inner realization—the exclusive Dharma of enlightenment, the joy of wisdom.

"Perfectly complete" means that through the aforementioned wisdom, one cuts off all afflictions and their habitual tendencies in the nine stages of the three realms, both in the path of seeing and the path of cultivation. It eradicates the two types of obstructions and fully perfects the two types of merit.

"Pure and clear" signifies freedom from defilement and purity. Through the yoga method, aligning with a single moment of pure mind, one directly realizes the true suchness, and without abandoning great compassion, attains Buddhahood through the enjoyment body and the transformation body in both pure and impure lands.

The scripture says "pure" refers to the inherently unstained nature of the realm of truth, which is never defiled. Even when ordinary beings are shrouded in countless afflictions and dwell in ignorance, this nature does not diminish. Nor does it increase when one enters the path of the sages and attains Buddhahood.

The scriptures say, "The teaching of all dharmas as pure phrases" is given so that practitioners of yoga meditation remain unstained amid the cycle of birth and death, so that they may broadly engage in benefiting and bringing joy to sentient beings, so that they may quickly attain countless states of meditative absorption, liberation, and wisdom, so that they may swiftly accumulate vast stores of merit, and so that they may transcend all demonic forces and obstacles, swiftly fulfilling both worldly and transcendent aspirations. Thus, the Tathāgata's great compassion is proclaimed. "Compassionately regarding those of the highest vehicle lineage" leads to the seventeen types of pure yoga meditative absorption. Therefore, the sutras teach that the three realms are nothing but mind—when the mind is pure, sentient beings are pure; when the mind is defiled, sentient beings are defiled. It is also taught that the realm of sentient beings is the pure and wondrous Buddha-land of bodhisattvas, attained through cultivating these seventeen pure phrases.

"The phrase 'the purity of touch is the bodhisattva's position' means that through cultivating the yoga of the adamantine topknot and the practice of Lijiluo, one attains the purity of touch, and thus obtains the position of the bodhisattva Vajraśekhara Lijiluo."
