蓮池以信願行為適淨土者之資糧三者缺一不可而信尤要焉非信則願力不生起行無本樝菴云淨土無難易難易在人難者疑情咫尺萬里易者信心萬里咫尺故證不退轉地者須有不退轉之心以為之先導信是也信由自發非由他人然長夜必須秉燭幽谷必待日光淨土之說如來金口所宣古今諸大知識所論其明白不啻日與燭矣而信心猶或不啟其真扣槃揣籥之徒與今取龍舒所載而補其未及述啟信第二。

> Lianchi regards Faith, Vow, and Practice as the three provisions for those who seek rebirth in the Pure Land—none of them can be omitted. Among these, Faith is especially crucial. Without Faith, the power of Vows cannot arise, and Practice has no foundation. Zhuan'an said: "The Pure Land has no distinction of easy or difficult—the distinction lies in the person. For those with doubt, a thousand miles away seems like ten thousand; for those with Faith, ten thousand miles seems like a thousand." Therefore, those who reach the stage of non-retrogression must first possess a non-retrogressive mind as their guide—and that is Faith. Faith arises from within oneself, not from others. Yet in the long night, one must hold a candle; in a deep valley, one must await the sunlight. The teachings of the Pure Land were proclaimed by the Tathāgata's golden mouth, and discussed by the great teachers of ancient and modern times—their clarity is no less than the sun and the candle. And yet, Faith still may not awaken—such are those who truly grope for a bell or feel for a sun. Now I take what Longshu has recorded and supplement what he omitted, presenting "On Awakening Faith" as the second chapter.
