> Chapter 18: The Merits of Rejoicing

> At that time, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Maitreya addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One, if a virtuous man or virtuous woman, upon hearing this Lotus Sutra, rejoices in faith, how much merit will they obtain?"

> And he spoke this verse:

> "After the World-Honored One's parinirvāṇa, those who hear this sūtra, if they can rejoice in it, how much merit will they obtain?"

> At that time, the Buddha addressed the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Maitreya: "Ajita! After the Tathāgata's parinirvāṇa, if bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, upāsikās, or other wise persons, whether old or young, having heard this sūtra and rejoiced in it, depart from the Dharma assembly and go elsewhere—whether to a monastic dwelling, a secluded place, a city, a lane, a village, or a field—and according to what they have heard, expound it to their parents, relatives, good friends, and acquaintances, each according to their ability. These people, having heard it, rejoice and in turn teach others; others, having heard it, also rejoice and teach in turn. Thus it is transmitted successively until the fiftieth person.

> Ajita! Now I shall speak of the merits and virtues of the fiftieth man or woman who rejoices upon hearing this Dharma. Listen well. Suppose there were a being who, seeking merit, provided all manner of delightful enjoyments according to the desires of all living beings throughout four hundred ten-thousand million nayutas of worlds—beings of the six destinies and four modes of birth: egg-born, womb-born, moisture-born, or transformation-born; with form or without form; with perception or without perception; neither with perception nor without perception; legless, two-legged, four-legged, or many-legged—all beings within the realm of living creatures. To each and every being, he gave a full Jambudvīpa of gold, silver, lapis lazuli, mother-of-pearl, carnelian, coral, amber, and all manner of exquisite jewels, as well as elephants, horses, carriages, and palaces and towers adorned with the seven treasures. This great donor made such offerings for a full eighty years. Then he thought: “I have given these living beings all manner of delightful enjoyments according to their desires. Yet these beings are now all aged, over eighty years old, with white hair and wrinkled faces. Death is not far off. I should instruct and guide them with the Buddha-Dharma.” Thereupon he gathered these beings, proclaimed and taught the Dharma to them, revealing, instructing, benefiting, and gladdening them. In a single moment, they all attained the stages of Stream-enterer, Once-returner, Non-returner, and Arhat, exhausting all outflows, attaining mastery in profound meditative concentrations, and perfecting the eight liberations. What do you think? Are the merits and virtues obtained by this great donor not abundant?

> Maitreya addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One, the merit of this person is exceedingly great, immeasurable and boundless. If a donor merely provides all beings with comforts and necessities, the merit is already immeasurable—how much more so when enabling them to attain the fruit of Arhatship."

> The Buddha addressed Maitreya, "I now clearly tell you, if a person were to offer all kinds of joyful provisions to sentient beings of the six destinies throughout four hundred thousand billion asaṃkhyeya worlds, and furthermore enable them to attain the fruit of Arhatship, the merit gained from this would not compare to the merit of the fiftieth person who, upon hearing a single verse of the Lotus Sutra, rejoices with faith. It does not reach a hundredth, a thousandth, a hundred thousand ten-millionth part thereof, nor can it be known by any calculation or analogy."

> Ajita! The merit of rejoicing upon hearing the Lotus Sutra, even when passed on through fifty persons in succession, is already immeasurable, boundless, and beyond calculation by asamkhya kalpas—how much more so for one who rejoices upon hearing it directly in the assembly! Their blessings are even more surpassing, immeasurable, boundless, and beyond any comparison.

> Furthermore, Ajita! If someone, for the sake of this sutra, goes to a monastic dwelling and listens to it for even a moment, whether sitting or standing, by virtue of this merit, in their next life they will obtain excellent and sublime elephants, horses, carriages, jeweled palanquins, and even celestial palaces to ride. If again, at a place where the Dharma is being taught, someone is seated, and another person comes, and the first encourages them to sit and listen, or shares their seat to let them sit, the merit of this person will cause them, in their next life, to attain the seat of Śakra, Lord of the Devas, or the seat of a Brahmā King, or the seat of a Wheel-Turning Sage King.

> Ajita! If someone says to another person, "There is a sutra called the Lotus Sutra—let us go hear it together," and that person follows this advice and listens even for a moment, then such a person's merit will be such that in their next life they will be born alongside Bodhisattvas who possess the Dharani. They will have sharp faculties and wisdom, and for hundreds, thousands, and ten thousand generations, they will never be mute or dumb. Their breath will not be foul, their tongue will always be free of disease, and their mouth will likewise be free of affliction. Their teeth will not be stained, blackened, yellowed, or spaced apart, nor will they fall out, be broken, crooked, or bent. Their lips will not droop, nor be shriveled, rough, covered in sores, chapped, or misshapen—not too thick, too large, or darkened, and free of any unpleasant quality. Their nose will not be flat, sunken, or crooked, their complexion will not be dark, narrow, or elongated, nor hollowed or distorted, and there will be none of the unattractive features whatsoever. Their lips, tongue, and teeth will all be beautiful and fine, their nose straight and well-formed, their face full and complete, their brow high and long, their forehead broad, level, and upright—endowed with all auspicious marks. In every life they are born into, they will see the Buddha, hear the Dharma, and faithfully accept and uphold the teachings.

> Ajita! Behold now, the merit gained from encouraging even a single person to go and listen to the Dharma is such as this. How much more, then, for one who with single-minded focus listens to, recites, and expounds it to the assembly, and who practices in accordance with what is taught?

> Then the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, proclaimed in verse:

> If a person at a Dharma assembly Hears this sutra, Even just one verse, And rejoices and teaches it to others, And thus the teaching is passed on, Until the fiftieth person, The merit gained by the last person Shall now be distinguished. Suppose there is a great donor Who provides for a limitless multitude, Fully satisfying them for eighty years According to their every wish. Seeing their aged appearance, Hair white and faces wrinkled, Teeth sparse, bodies withered, Knowing death is not far off, He thinks, "I should now teach them, Enabling them to attain the fruit of the Path." He then skillfully expounds for them The true Dharma of Nirvana: "The world is all impermanent, Like water bubbles, foam, and flames; You should all quickly give rise To a mind of weariness and detachment." Those people, hearing this Dharma, All attain Arhatship, Fully endowed with the six supernormal powers, The three clear knowledges and the eight liberations. If the fiftieth person in succession Hears one verse and rejoices, This person's merit surpasses that donor's Beyond any comparison. Such merit from hearing in succession Is still immeasurable, How much more so for one who first hears And rejoices at the Dharma assembly? If someone encourages another, Guiding them to listen to the Lotus Sutra, Saying, "This sutra is profound and wonderful, Hard to encounter in millions of kalpas," And that person accepts the advice and goes to listen, Even if only for a moment, The karmic reward of that person Shall now be distinguished: Life after life, free from mouth ailments, Teeth never sparse, yellow, or black, Lips never thick, upturned, or cleft, Without any repulsive features; Tongue never dry, black, or short, Nose high, long, and straight, Forehead broad and even, Face and eyes all dignified and pure, Pleasing for others to behold, Breath free from foul odor, The fragrance of the utpala flower Constantly issuing from the mouth. If one intentionally goes to a monastic dwelling Wishing to hear the Lotus Sutra, And rejoices upon hearing it even briefly, Their merit shall now be told: In later lives among gods and humans, They will obtain fine elephant and horse carriages, Precious jeweled chariots, And ride in celestial palaces. If at a place where the Dharma is expounded, One encourages others to sit and listen to the sutra, Through this meritorious cause, they will gain The thrones of Śakra, Brahmā, and wheel-turning kings. How much more for one who listens single-mindedly, Explains its meaning and principles, And practices according to the teachings— Their merit is immeasurable.
