Great Compassion Mantra (大悲經)

Chapter 12: Entrusting the True Dharma Through Parables

Then the World-Honored One said to the Venerable Ananda: "Set aside for now the merits and benefits I attained when I realized enlightenment. The merits and benefits I obtained while practicing the bodhisattva path are such that even Pratyekabuddhas cannot fathom them, let alone Hearers or other beings. Ananda! When I was a bodhisattva, I long cultivated ascetic practices, renouncing my royal position, wife, children, palace women, my own body, life, hands, feet, head, eyes, ears, nose, flesh, blood, marrow, and bones, and endured countless kinds of suffering—all of this I did for your sake, in my quest for supreme, perfect enlightenment. Ananda! I have abandoned all that is hard to abandon, and all the suffering I have endured was for the sake of sentient beings. Ananda! If I were to fully expound these merits, they could never be exhaustively described. Even those who hear about them would become confused and dizzy—how much more so those who try to speak of them?"

"Ananda! If any sentient being gives rise to a single thought of compassion, feeling pity for the Tathāgata Śākyamuni—the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One—who in the past practiced the asceticism of a Bodhisattva, and says: 'For our sake, He endured all kinds of suffering and difficult tasks.' Ananda, I declare that even those who give rise to such a single thought will surely attain final Nirvāṇa. How much more so those who have planted wholesome roots within me?

Ananda, there are foolish people who are stubborn and faithless. Upon hearing of my past ascetic practice as a Bodhisattva, they do not give rise to even a single thought of compassion, they do not say that the Tathāgata has brought great benefit, and they neither respect nor believe. Therefore, they cannot attain the supreme practices that lead to Nirvāṇa.

Ananda, these meritorious qualities and beneficial Dharmas are beyond the reach of the Pratyekabuddha, let alone all Śrāvakas or ordinary beings."

"Ananda, the great compassion attained by those who practice the Bodhisattva path is not something that Pratyekabuddhas can possess. Ananda, if someone cultivates the Bodhisattva practice as I do, they will attain this great compassion. Once they have attained it, they will surely realize supreme, perfect enlightenment. Therefore, this teaching is rooted in great loving-kindness and great compassion. For this reason, Pratyekabuddhas do not possess it. Because of this, they cannot become Tathagatas, Worthy Ones, or Perfectly Enlightened Ones, nor do they possess the ten powers, the four grounds of fearlessness, great loving-kindness, and great compassion."

Ānanda! I recall that in the past, as I was cultivating the bodhisattva path and seeking virtuous qualities, my mind was always filled with dread toward birth and death, while I developed great compassion toward all living beings. Then in a dream, I saw a large iron wall collapsing, and in the space between worlds there were beings in a great hell, tormented and oppressed by the wardens. Their bodies were broken and crushed, engulfed in flames like a blazing mass of fire, suffering pain as intense as the agony of death itself.

I went to that place, and those beings joined their palms, bowed, and said to me: "Virtuous one! You are now experiencing joy, while we suffer the torments of hell—a bitterness so hard to endure, as painful as the throes of death. We have no one to rescue us, no protector, no refuge, no one to turn to. Great being! If you wish to rescue us from such suffering, you surely have the power to do so."

Ānanda! At that moment, I felt great compassion for those hell beings. Even in the dream, I wept tears as vast as the waters of the Ganges River. I consoled those beings, saying: "Virtuous ones! Do not be afraid. I will free you from this mass of suffering."

Ānanda! I then gathered those hell beings together in one place, and with my right hand gently touched the crowns of their heads, telling them: "Virtuous ones! Do not be afraid. I will surely rescue and liberate you all."

The moment I spoke these words, the blazing fires of hell were immediately extinguished, and those beings instantly experienced peace and happiness.

Ānanda! At that time, I woke from the dream, shook out my robe, collected my tears, and placed them in a vessel. Ānanda! This is how I, possessing such great compassion, cultivated the bodhisattva path. How much more so now that I have attained unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment?

Ānanda! You should understand that such a quality is not even possessed by pratyekabuddhas, let alone by śrāvakas or ordinary people. Ānanda! Whoever possesses this quality is one who cultivates the bodhisattva path.

"Ānanda! Observe how the Tathāgata, during His practice of the Bodhisattva path in the past, possessed such a great heart of compassion filled with pity and care for all beings. If I tried to describe this virtue through words, I could never reach its end."

Ānanda! In a past life, there was a great merchant leader who, seeking treasure, led many traders into the ocean. Their ship was filled to capacity with jewels, but midway across the sea, it suddenly broke apart. The traders were terrified and overcome with despair. Some grabbed planks, some floated, and some perished.

Ānanda, at that time I was that merchant leader. In the great ocean, I used a float-sack to cross safely. Then five people called out to me, "Great merchant leader! Please grant us safety!" Upon hearing this, the merchant leader said, "Friends, do not be afraid. I will ensure you all cross this ocean safely."

Ānanda, the merchant leader was carrying a sharp sword and thought: "It is the nature of the sea not to keep a dead body. If I now give up my own life, these traders will surely cross this perilous ocean." With this thought, he called to the traders, telling them to hold onto him. Some rode on his back, some embraced his shoulders, and some grasped his thighs.

Then, wishing to grant them safety, the merchant leader cultivated great compassion, stirred up immense courage, and exerted his physical and mental strength. He swiftly cut off his own life with the sharp sword. At that moment, the sea washed his corpse ashore. The five traders then crossed the ocean safely, experiencing joy and peace, free from danger, and returning to Jambudvīpa.

Ānanda, was that merchant leader someone else? It was I myself. Those five traders are now the five monks. They were saved from the great ocean back then, and now they have been saved from this ocean of birth and death, set on the shore of Nirvāṇa, where there is no fear.

"Ananda! Now observe — what kind of ascetic practices must one fully cultivate? How does one attain the boundless merit to become a Great Bodhisattva? Ananda, you should understand that such merit is attained step by step, and it is not something even a Pratyekabuddha can possess. Ananda, the merit of Bodhisattvas is like this. Because Pratyekabuddhas lack this teaching, they do not become Tathagatas, Worthy Ones, or Perfectly Enlightened Ones, nor do they attain Supreme Perfect Enlightenment. Ananda, it is by being able to cultivate such ascetic practices that one becomes a Bodhisattva with great compassion, pitying all sentient beings.

"Ananda! Some ignorant people do not develop faith and reverence toward me, the Buddha. Because of this, they cannot plant the fundamental seeds for attaining supreme perfect enlightenment, nor can they realize unsurpassed nirvana. However, if they develop faith and reverence toward me, they will immediately be able to plant the seeds of enlightenment and realize nirvana. Ananda! Practicing a little brings a little merit; practicing fully brings full merit."

"Ānanda, let me speak further on the certainty of practice. If any living being can arouse even a single thought of reverence and faith, this good root will become a seed [for liberation]—how much more so when they plant superior wholesome roots? Ānanda, those who plant good roots with the Buddha, even solely through a single thought of mindful recollection of the Buddha—I declare that such roots are like the nectar of immortality, the final nectar of immortality."

”Ānanda! A practitioner should contemplate the Tathāgata in every respect—that is, recollecting what the Tathāgata recollects, recollecting the Tathāgata’s virtue, and recollecting the Tathāgata’s solar lineage. The lineage is not like others, for it arises from the noble sugarcane lineage. The solar lineage means it dispels all darkness and brings light. Ānanda, since I was born into the Śākya clan, my lineage is pure.”

Ānanda! You should recollect: the Tathāgata's birth, the Tathāgata's family lineage, the Tathāgata's clan name, the Tathāgata's full store of merit, the Tathāgata's beauty, the Tathāgata's homeland, the Tathāgata's marks, the Tathāgata's secondary characteristics, the Tathāgata's ten powers, the Tathāgata's four kinds of fearlessness, the Tathāgata's eighteen unique qualities, the Tathāgata's complete origins, the Tathāgata's loveliness, the Tathāgata's freedom from ignorance, the Tathāgata's full practice of past lives, the Tathāgata's fulfillment of vows, the Tathāgata's perfection of discipline, meditative absorption, wisdom, liberation, and the knowledge and vision of liberation, the Tathāgata's full measure of loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity, and the Tathāgata's complete dignity in conduct.

Ānanda! Whoever cultivates mindfulness of the Buddha, reflecting on these qualities one by one, will attain great supernormal powers, great benefit, and vast merit. It is like ambrosia, the highest ambrosia, the ultimate ambrosia.

"Ananda! In the past, when I was a Bodhisattva practicing the Perfection of Giving, I examined my merit with the wisdom of a Buddha and could not see its limit—let alone the merit I cultivated through the Perfection of Pure Conduct, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Meditation, and the Perfection of Wisdom, or any other such virtues. Even the merit of a Bodhisattva who has not yet received a prediction of enlightenment is beyond measurement when observed with a Buddha's wisdom. How much more so is the merit of one who has received a prediction? And how much more so is the merit of one who has become a fully awakened Buddha? Even if you were to proclaim it for hundreds, thousands, millions, or billions of eons, you could never reach its limit. Why is that? Because a Tathāgata, an Arhat, a Fully Enlightened One has immeasurable merit.

Ananda, I speak these things having realized this benefit through true wisdom. Anyone who remembers the merit and benefit of my time as a Bodhisattva, and who develops faith and respect in their heart, will, through these wholesome roots, ultimately attain ultimate Nirvāṇa. Therefore, Ananda, do not be anxious or sorrowful. For your sake, and for the sake of all gods and humans, I have shown the path. I have taught you the Dharma, guiding you toward the secure and ultimate peace of final Nirvāṇa. Now, practice diligently in this way, and be careful not to be negligent."

Then the World-Honored One addressed the monks, saying: "Tonight I will enter Parinirvāṇa. You now see me for the last time, receive my teaching for the last time, and gather with me for the last time. From now on, you will no longer see me, and I will no longer see you. Monks, cease your sorrow and lamentation. All that is beloved and pleasing must be parted from. Monks, anything that is born, that exists, that is conditioned, that is differentiated, that can be known, that arises from causes and conditions and is subject to decay—if it could not be destroyed, that would be impossible. Monks, even if something lasts long, it will eventually pass away. Monks, whatever is born inevitably dies. All conditioned things are impermanent, without any fixed or unchanging foundation. Monks, birth and death are suffering; Nirvāṇa is bliss. If you wish to attain what has not yet been attained, to reach what has not yet been reached, to realize what has not yet been realized, you must diligently strive for it. Monks, practice diligently, and be careful not to be heedless. It is through heedfulness that the Buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have attained Supreme Perfect Enlightenment and all other wholesome qualities that aid the path. Therefore, you should accept my teaching."

At that time, the assembly—monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, as well as devas, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, Shakras, Brahma devas, and the Four Heavenly Kings—upon hearing these final teachings, were overcome with sorrow and misery. Struck by the arrows of grief, they wept and wailed loudly, crying out:

"O Blessed One! How swiftly you enter Parinirvana! O Sugata! How swiftly you enter Parinirvana! The light of the world has been extinguished, and the world has fallen into darkness—how suddenly this has happened! How can we be parted so soon from this treasure of all beings?"

At that time, Ananda, upon hearing these words, gazed at the Tathagata without blinking. Then he reflected, and overwhelmed with sorrow, wept aloud. He threw himself to the ground, like a great tree cut down on the edge of a steep cliff.

At that time, the World-Honored One said to Ananda, "Stop now—do not be sorrowful. Haven't I already told you long ago: everything that pleases you and everything you cherish will one day be parted from you. Whatever is born, exists, is conditioned, differentiated, perceived, or produced by causes and conditions is subject to decay and destruction. To think that such things could never end would be impossible."

The Venerable Ananda, upon hearing these words, said to the Buddha: "Blessed One, how could I not be sorrowful? Sugata, how could I not be grieved? I will be parted from such a treasure of beings, the shared vessel of beings, the guide of beings, the one sought by the world, the refuge of the world, the great teacher of gods and humans. Therefore, Blessed One, how could I not be sorrowful? Sugata, how could I not be grieved? World-Honored One, I will be parted from one of such great compassion, who loves all beings, the world's dearest friend, the eye of the world, the jewel that brings light. And I am amazed that my heart does not shatter into a hundred pieces. World-Honored One, I am further amazed that I still remain here and have not taken my own life. World-Honored One, I am even more amazed that my body does not crumble like chaff. World-Honored One, then I thought: 'If I do not die now, it must be because of the Tathāgata's sustaining power.' Blessed One, how could I not be sorrowful? Sugata, how could I not be grieved? Today, this shared vessel of beings, this world's guide, this compassionate one, tomorrow will be gone and seen no more."

At that time, the Buddha said to the venerable Ananda, "Do you love me?"

Ananda said, "How wonderful, Bhagavan! How wonderful, Sugata!"

The Buddha said, "Ānanda, how can you love me?"

Ananda said: "My love for the World-Honored One cannot be fully expressed through words, nor can it be captured by any metaphor. Blessed One, this is how I love. Well-Gone One, this is how I love. World-Honored One, I would not hesitate to give up even my body and life for the Tathagata. Blessed One, this is how I love. Well-Gone One, this is how I love. World-Honored One, only the Buddha can truly know the depth of my love for the Tathagata. Blessed One, this is how I love. Well-Gone One, this is how I love."

Then the World-Honored One said to Ananda again, "If you love me, stretch out your right hand to me."

Then Ananda extended his right hand. At that moment, the World-Honored One, with his golden right hand—its palm soft and gentle, colored like fine purple-gold ore—took Ananda’s hand and spoke: “Ananda, if you love me, you should do what is loving for me. And what is the loving act for me? This great treasure of the Dharma—the one I have cultivated and realized through countless hundreds of thousands of billions of eons—this treasury of supreme, perfect enlightenment, I entrust to you. You must follow it, and just as I have turned the wheel, so you must turn it. Let it spread far and wide without ever being cut off. Do not become someone who lets the Dharma die out in the middle. Ananda, now I will give you my protection, so that the true Dharma and the monastic discipline spoken by the Buddha may grow, never decline, and never be lost.”

"I will now give a parable, and those with wisdom will understand it through this illustration.

Imagine a wealthy, noble elder from an aristocratic family—immensely rich, with extensive storehouses and everything he could possibly need. His wealth was entirely his own, not shared with others. He came from a long and distinguished lineage, and the circumstances of his birth were also impeccable.

This elder had one son. When the son grew up, the elder diligently taught him mathematics, accounting, writing, and various other profound crafts and deep wisdom. After the son had learned all of these, the elder said to him: 'I have now done for you all that a father should. You have learned mathematics, accounting, writing, profound crafts, and deep wisdom. Today is my final instruction to you. All of these treasures and wealth are mine, and now I entrust them entirely to you. From now on, you must practice three things to preserve our family's heritage:

What are the three? First, desire.* Second, effort. Third, vigilance.'

So, this wealthy elder skillfully instructed his one son. But that son became reckless and negligent, and wasted all his parents' property.

Ānanda! What do you think? Did that elder's son follow his father's instruction?"

Ananda replied, "No, Blessed One. No, Well-Gone One."

The Buddha said, "Ānanda! Would a wealthy elder act as his son's father?"

Ananda replied, "Yes, indeed, Blessed One! Yes, indeed, Well-Gone One!"

The Buddha said, "Ānanda, the Tathāgata is like a father to the world, and you are like a child. Today marks my final teaching. I entrust to you this treasury of the supreme Dharma—the priceless teachings I have cultivated over hundreds of billions, trillions, and countless eons. You should also practice three things. What are these three? The first is aspiration, the second is diligent effort, and the third is vigilant non-complacency. If you uphold these three things, this treasury of the supreme Dharma, cultivated over countless eons, will endure long. Those who have not yet reached the wholesome Dharma will be guided to it, and those who have already reached it will not regress. Therefore, you must steadfastly maintain this treasury of Anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi—the supreme complete enlightenment—cultivated over countless eons. Ensure that those not yet established in the three things become established, that those who have not yet reached the wholesome Dharma reach it, and that those who have already reached it do not regress. Why is this? It is because I act out of compassion, kindness, and a desire to benefit all beings in the world, wishing to bring them peace and happiness. Ānanda, I have fulfilled my role as father and friend to the world. I have done what needed to be done for you."

"Further, Ananda, the Dharma of Supreme Perfect Enlightenment that I have cultivated throughout countless eons will be lost in the future due to three causes. What are these three? First, a lack of faith; second, not abiding in resolute conduct; third, not practicing repentance. Therefore, Ananda, you must now protect this treasury of true Dharma. To cultivate deep faith and firm repentance, you should diligently apply yourself with aspiration, effort, and heedfulness. Thus have you, like children honoring your father—the World-Honored One, the supreme teacher of the Dharma—done what needed to be done. Ananda, for this reason, I now offer a metaphor to ensure this unsurpassed treasury of true Dharma is passed on with increasing care. Through this metaphor, all who are wise will hear, understand, and develop even greater love, respect, and faith. They will think: 'The Blessed One, the Thus-Come One, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, for our sake, at the moment of his passing, took Ananda’s hand with his right hand and entrusted to him this Dharma of Supreme Perfect Enlightenment, cultivated over countless eons.'"

"Suppose a merchant who traveled far along the road has completed everything he set out to do. Ananda, what do you think—will that merchant now return home, or will he remain on the road?"

Ananda said, "World-Honored One, He came back home and did not stay on the path."

"Ananda! The Tathagata, the father of the world, the friend of the world, and the guide of the world, is like a great caravan leader. With the wisdom of supreme perfect enlightenment, he has accomplished all that needed to be done. There is no further Buddha-work remaining. All beings who could be saved have been saved; those who could be guided have been perfectly tamed."

"Ananda, there are three conditions that, if unsatisfied and unattained, prevent a Tathagata, an Arhat, a Perfectly Enlightened One from entering final Nirvana. What are these three? First is when a great Bodhisattva has not yet attained irreversible progress. Second is when the unsurpassed true Dharma of the Tathagatas is on the verge of vanishing—whether after one eon, a hundred eons, a thousand eons, or a hundred thousand myriad trillion eons—and a Bodhisattva has not yet achieved supreme perfect enlightenment. Although the time for the Buddhas and World-Honored Ones to enter Nirvana has arrived, they see that this Bodhisattva's wholesome roots have not yet ripened. In order to help this Bodhisattva mature and become irreversible, they use their supernatural powers to sustain their own existence and remain in the world. Only after this Bodhisattva has attained irreversibility do they immediately grant the prediction that this Bodhisattva will be the next to attain supreme perfect enlightenment. Only then do these Buddhas and Tathagatas enter final Nirvana without remainder.

Therefore, I now grant the prediction of supreme perfect enlightenment to Maitreya and countless hundreds of thousands of myriad trillion great Bodhisattvas, allowing them to abide in the state of non-retrogression. This is what all Buddhas, out of compassion for sentient beings, have done and must do."

"Furthermore, Ananda, if there are living beings who should be freed by the Tathāgata but have not yet been liberated, the Tathāgata will never enter Nirvāṇa. If the World-Honored One knows that for countless billions of eons no other Buddha will appear in this world or others, and among all beings in the five realms—whether after one year, a hundred years, a thousand years, a hundred thousand years, or even a hundred thousand billion nayutas of years, up to an eon or more—those beings are destined to be saved by me and not by any Śrāvaka or Pratyekabuddha. Knowing this through Buddha wisdom, even when it is time for that World-Honored One to enter Nirvāṇa, out of compassion for them, He uses His divine power to sustain His own body in the world without disappearing, until they become mature, and then He liberates them. Ananda, this is the second reason why the Buddhas, World-Honored Ones, after doing what must be done, enter the Nirvāṇa without remainder."

"Furthermore, Ananda, the profound meanings of the Tathāgata's teachings—whether in the sūtras, the monastic rules (Vinaya), or the analytical summaries (Mātṛkā)—cannot be fully understood by the community of Śrāvakas, whether they are still learners or beyond learning. If a monk in that assembly has a doubt and wishes to ask, out of reverence for the Buddha, he fears causing disturbance and dares not question directly. Then the Tathāgata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, knowing through his Buddha wisdom, creates a transformation monk who approaches the Tathāgata and asks: 'World-Honored One, how should this matter be done?' The Buddha then tells that transformation monk: 'Monk, this matter should be done in this way.' Ananda, these are the three tasks that all Buddhas and World-Honored Ones must certainly accomplish; if these tasks are not fulfilled, they do not enter Nirvāṇa."

All of this I have now accomplished and fulfilled. There is nothing more to be done, nothing more to be said. Ananda, I have already taught the monks the study of the Vinaya and the Prātimokṣa, showing the true path for the end of suffering and explaining the practice that leads to decisive accomplishment. Therefore, Ananda, from now on, you must not speak of what I have not taught, and you must not let what I have taught become extinct. Ananda, as I have taught, so should you learn, so should you practice. Do not be negligent, and do not seek pleasure. Through diligence, the fruits of the path will be attained. For this reason, I instruct you: do not grieve, do not lament.

"Ananda, tomorrow night I will enter Parinirvana. I am now about to abandon my own land and realm, and I will no longer return to this world, nor will I go to any other world *[Note: 'other world' refers to a future state of existence]*. From now on, you will no longer see me, and I too will no longer see you. Ananda, I will enter the state of final Nirvana—a state that is tranquil, cool, and pure, free from dust and defilement, where all suffering ceases, and the shelter of worldly existence is abandoned. In this state there is no birth, no aging, no sickness, no death, no sorrow, no lamentation, no pain, no distress, no dissatisfaction, no regret, no meeting with what is disliked, no separation from what is beloved. It is the very state that all the Tathagatas of the past, like the sands of the Ganges, together with their disciples and solitary enlightened ones, have already entered, are entering, and will enter."

"Ānanda! Now you should understand that I myself cherish the supreme state of complete Nirvana. Yet there are ignorant, foolish people who do not cherish that sublime, tranquil, and blissful Nirvana, nor can they even generate a single thought in accord with liberation. But if a person can generate that single thought, then by this very cause and condition, it becomes a seed that will lead them to Nirvana.

Ānanda, what strength could ordinary people possibly have? All ordinary people are weak and powerless. Ānanda, I see all ignorant, foolish people as mere chaff. Therefore, Ānanda, how could ignorant, foolish people have strength? How could they have peace? They are unable to generate even a single thought in accord with liberation. Yet if they could generate that thought, they would surely become a seed for Nirvana.

Ānanda, all ignorant, foolish people lack the power of moral discipline, the power of concentration, and the power of wisdom. But Ānanda, I am already endowed with countless powers of a Buddha—endowed with the immeasurable, inconceivable, boundless, and incomparable powers of discipline, concentration, wisdom, liberation, the knowledge and vision of liberation, the power of shame, the power of remorse, the power of long‑accumulated practice, the power of intellect, the power of renunciation, the power of merit, the power of insight, the power of faculties, the power of effort, and the fulfillment of the Ten Powers—and yet I still cherish that complete Nirvana.

"Ananda, there are common people who are dull-witted and ignorant, with little understanding of the Dharma. They delight in being bound by the prison of birth and death, unable for even a single moment to awaken a mind that aspires to liberation. Yet, these very people can attain the fundamental seeds of Nirvana. Ananda, in this way, the scriptures praised and spoken by the Tathagata will remain in the future. If, after my passing, someone in a future age hears them and awakens their aspiration, they will immediately enter the treasury of true Dharma and reach the realm of Nirvana without remainder."

"Ananda, let me give you a simile to help you deeply understand the meaning. Ananda, imagine a caravan leader guiding merchants through a vast and treacherous wilderness road. After escaping dangers from bandits, they reach the city of fearlessness. Among them is a person left behind, terrified, who follows the tracks and eventually sees the other merchants with great difficulty, finally escaping the danger and rejoining them.

Ananda, just so, after the Tathagata attains perfect enlightenment, I teach all these sutras and leave them for the future. After I pass away, if any good men or good women hear them, they will become inspired and reach the city of true Dharma that I have left behind—the realm of final Nirvana. Having entered the city of true Dharma, they will reflect, remember, uphold, and teach my treasury of Dharma. Ananda, I would entrust even one single person with this supreme teaching for you to uphold—how much more so for countless hundreds of thousands of beings? Therefore, now I entrust to you this treasury of the supreme true Dharma, accumulated over billions of eons. You should recite it well and uphold it firmly, explaining it separately to the pure-hearted assembly of four groups, and never let it perish in your hands."

"Ānanda! In the future, there will be beings who, not hearing the meaning of these sūtras, fall away and retreat. Therefore, Ānanda, I will give an example. Imagine a wealthy, noble man with vast treasures, his storehouses full and everything he needs for life complete. He has only one son, who has traveled to a distant land. Then the wealthy man falls seriously ill, suffering excruciating pain. As death approaches, he entrusts his many treasures—gems, pearls, crystal, conch shells, gold and silver coins—to another wealthy man, saying: 'You should know, my son has journeyed far away, and I am gravely ill, soon to die. For my son’s sake, I entrust these countless treasures from my storehouses to you. When my son returns from afar, teach him on my behalf. Tell him not to be heedless, but to remain firmly established in diligence and vigilance. Then, give him these storehouses of treasure. When you hand them over, say: "Young man, your father, at the end of his life, entrusted these treasures to me for your sake. Now I return them to you. They are your own property. You should accept them. Be careful, do not be careless. Hold onto them firmly and guard them well—do not let them be lost."' Then the wealthy, noble man said these words, entrusted all his treasures, and the other wealthy man accepted them. Shortly after, the son returned from his distant land. But the other man did not return the entrusted treasures. Ānanda, what do you think? Whose fault is this?"

The Venerable Ananda said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, the fault lies with the trustee, not with others. Why is that? Because the trustee personally received the many precious items from that wealthy elder, and then failed to return them to the elder's son."

The Buddha said, "Ānanda, the wealthy elder is a metaphor for the Tathāgata; the person on the verge of death represents the Tathāgata about to enter Nirvāṇa; the one child symbolizes the faithful men and women of good lineage in future ages; the journey to a distant land illustrates the cycle of rebirth through the five realms; the great treasure storehouse represents the supreme Dharma treasury that the Tathāgata has cultivated over countless eons; the elder entrusted with the treasure is like you, the great śrāvakas, bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, and protectors of the true Dharma.

"Ānanda, this supreme treasure of the Dharma, cultivated over immeasurable eons, I now entrust to you, along with Mahākāśyapa, Maitreya, and all the great bodhisattvas, for the sake of future faithful men and women. If you follow my instructions, you will give the Dharma treasure to those pure-hearted disciples in the future who receive your teaching.

"Why is this, Ānanda? There are beings whom I ripened in my past lives as a bodhisattva. Because of their evil deeds, they fell into hell, the animal realm, or the realm of hungry ghosts. After my passing, these beings will emerge from the lower realms and be reborn among humans. When their faculties become mature and developed, they will, even through slight causes, generate faith and respect for my Dharma. Some may even renounce the world and become monastics. Hearing the sūtras I have taught, they will embark on superior practice—whether toward the vehicle of the śrāvaka, the vehicle of the pratyekabuddha, or the great vehicle—and ultimately attain Nirvāṇa."

Ānanda, I entrust to you this supreme treasury of the Dharma—the great and precious teaching that I have cultivated over countless billions of eons—for the sake of all good men and good women in future ages. I do this so that they may hear it. Why? Because if those beings do not hear this true and right teaching, they will fall back and lose their way. Therefore, I now entrust to you this great Dharma treasure for those future good men and others. If they hear it, they will not fall back.

"Because of this, I will give another analogy. Ananda, imagine a universal monarch opening his treasury and commanding his officials: 'Good people, you must give gifts to all renunciants, Brahmins, the poor, beggars, and travelers. Give them whatever they need: food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, vehicles to those who need transport, and also garlands, perfumes, incense, clothing, bedding, clean lodging, and provisions for living.' But after receiving the king's command, the treasury officials do not carry out the giving. Ananda, what do you think—whose fault is that?"

Ananda said, "Greatly Virtuous One, the fault lies with the corrupt officials, not with the Wheel-Turning King."

The Buddha said, “Ānanda, it is exactly as you say. As the King of the Dharma, over countless eons beyond measure, I have widely gathered this great treasury of the Dharma. Having awakened myself, I wished to expand it further and have openly taught it among gods and humans—including what I have revealed to you, and what I have taught to all faithful renunciants, Brahmins, and ordinary people who seek the meaning of the Dharma—so that all may hear it.

“Therefore, Ānanda, I now entrust this great Dharma treasure—already broadly revealed—to you. If you do not widely explain and distinguish it for faithful renunciants, Brahmins, elders, householders, and all ordinary people who delight in the meaning of the Dharma, then you will have a fault toward the Tathāgata. Why is that? Ānanda, I am the supreme wheel-turning king of the unconditioned Dharma, possessing many Dharma treasures and merit-storehouses, fully endowed with the seven factors of awakening, the ten powers, and the four kinds of fearlessness. I am sovereign over all teachings, and therefore I am called the King of the Dharma.

“Take this treasury of true Dharma—eighty-four thousand teachings—and fully proclaim it for those faithful renunciants, Brahmins, elders, householders, faithful ordinary people, and all Dharma teachers who seek its meaning. Do not create divisions, and do not become the one who causes the Dharma to disappear. Therefore, Ānanda, if you proclaim the supreme Dharma treasure—the unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment that I have cultivated over countless eons—for the fourfold assembly, you will have no fault toward the Tathāgata. But if you do not speak it, you will commit a grave fault.”

"Moreover, Ananda, if an Arhat monk who has eliminated all defilements, having realized the unconditioned state, is unable to explain and teach it to others, such a person does not benefit the Buddha, the guiding teacher, nor does he uphold and protect my true Dharma. Therefore, I now entrust the Dharma to you. Why is that? Ananda, it is like this: imagine someone in great darkness holding a grass torch, returning to their home. There are also many others who wish to cross through the darkness. The torchbearer, using this grass torch, manages to cross the darkness and reach their home. Once there, they extinguish the torch and do not share it with others. Ananda, what do you think? Would that person, knowing that the grass torch has not yet burned out, and also knowing that many people want to cross the darkness, still use the torch for themselves alone without giving it to others—would this be considered proper and good conduct?"

Ananda replied, "No, Blessed One. No, Well-Gone One."

The Buddha said: "Exactly so, exactly so, Ananda. If a monk attains the fruit of arhatship and realizes the unconditioned Dharma, and also knows that the assembly has crossed the darkness of birth and death, yet does not explain and proclaim for others the Dharma-treasure I have cultivated over countless eons, so that it may be expanded and increased, such a person is not called a beneficial guide, nor is he called one who upholds my true Dharma.

"Therefore, Ananda, I now entrust to you this Dharma-treasure, which I have cultivated over billions and countless eons. You must steadfastly uphold it and widely expound it for others, so that this true path may never be cut off. Do not become one who lets the Dharma perish in the final age."

"Ananda! If any monk, nun, layman, or laywoman has firmly established themselves within this treasure of Dharma, they will surely be able to explain and teach it to others, sharing this Dharma-treasure which I have cultivated for immeasurable eons. Therefore, Ananda! I now entrust you with these good teachings I have cultivated for countless eons—this second entrustment—for the sake of future beings, so that such beings may not fail to hear these teachings and thus suffer loss."

"Furthermore, Ananda, suppose there is a wealthy and noble elder with many storehouses, filled with precious gems, pearls, coral, and conch shells—everything needed for daily life abundantly available. Then an enemy comes and sets fire to his storehouses. Now, this elder has many other enemies and their close associates—people who always take pleasure in causing him harm, who would be unhappy to see him gain joy, who would be unhappy to see him gain peace. When these enemies see the great fire consuming the storehouses, they simply stand by in silence, making no effort to put it out. But the elder also has close friends and relatives who wish to show him compassion and care, who sincerely desire his happiness and peace. When they see the fire, however, they too stand by in silence, unwilling to extinguish it. Ananda, what do you think? Could these friends and relatives be considered to be acting in a righteous and reasonable manner?"

Ananda replied, "No, Blessed One. No, Well-Gone One."

The Buddha said, "Ānanda, when friends and relatives saw the great fire burning the storehouses, they abandoned them without trying to save anything. Did the fire then intensify and burn everything completely?"

Ānanda replied: “Thus it is, Blessed One! Thus it is, Well-Gone One!”

The Buddha said: “Exactly so, Ananda. In the time when the precious Dharma, the supreme root of goodness I have cultivated over countless eons, is declining, there will be monks who have no faith or respect. They will break their pure precepts, practice evil deeds, and take the lead in places of singing and dancing. They will not delight in renouncing desire or cultivating meditative concentration. Their minds will be distracted, lazy, and indolent. They will rarely listen to the Dharma and will take no pleasure in reciting it. How could such people explain and proclaim the Dharma for others, enabling them to hear and uphold this precious teaching?”

"Furthermore, Ananda, imagine a great king who has undergone the purification ceremony. He has only one son, who has traveled far away and is absent. The king falls gravely ill. When he becomes sick, he entrusts his various treasures and belongings to his ministers and elders, saying, 'If my son returns, you must install him on the throne to continue the royal lineage, and give him all the treasuries and storehouses.' The ministers and elders each accept the king's entrusted goods. After they receive them, the king passes away. After the king dies, his son returns and ascends the throne. Once seated, he has full authority, but the ministers and elders do not return the treasures and property, saying, 'Oh, great king! Rule justly and govern well, and bestow these treasures upon us.' Ananda, what do you think? Do the ministers and elders who received the entrusted goods commit any fault toward the king?"

Ananda said, "Yes, Bhagavan. Yes, Sugata. That is a mistake."

The Buddha said: "Ananda! The traveler represents sentient beings in the five realms; the sick person represents the Buddha wishing to enter Nirvana; the abundant treasure represents the thirty-seven practices that aid enlightenment; the minister and elder represent the Arhats; entrusting the treasure represents me passing on to you the Dharma treasure I have cultivated for immeasurable, countless eons, and for the sake of those future disciples to come."
