The *Chan School’s Verses on Old Cases Linked as Pearls* was compiled by the Qiantang monk Puhui, building upon the work of the Dharma master Faying. It captures the direct pointing sounds and coughs of the ancient patriarchs. For each case, existing pieces were expanded and gaps were filled. Now carved into blocks, it calls to Chan practitioners.
One day, someone came eagerly flipping through the first volume, seeking a short preface. After reading it through, they praised, saying, “Is this peerless freedom itself? Is this the wish-fulfilling Mani gem? Did the compiler, Master Puhui, truly obtain these linked pearls from the waters of Red Cloud, like Xiang Wang himself? In times past, a western merchant packed his goods, heading to Xianyang to haggle with a bearded, high-nosed, blue-eyed trader. He held up an item in both hands, declaring it genuine or fake—then the uncut jade from Mount Jing was tossed onto a blind man’s path. A crippled man, feet twice severed, how could he splash blood and embrace tears to prove its worth? Some say, ‘Visit my garden and see the Trumpet Flower; step onto the ground of awakening and taste the Mango Fruit.’ That flower needs no eye to pluck, yet you take it in your chest; that fruit needs no counting, yet you savor its marrow. This we call true realization, true practice. But if you skim idly, taste casually, and hastily fail to discern what it truly is, then you are just an ordinary wanderer in worn straw sandals.”
I say wisdom has sharpness and dullness, so understanding can be fast or slow. Insight has depth and shallowness, so thought can be refined or crude. It’s like fragrant grass on the horizon—a noble heir sees it with his eyes, sharing common knowledge of the landscape’s flow, untouched by brambles. Yet in a thick, tangled patch, only one can name each plant: coriander, angelica, vanilla, mint. That is true connoisseurship—a single encounter with the world’s delights. Otherwise, your nose might smell all kinds of clean fragrances, but if your skin and cheeks are off by just a little, you still haven’t the authentic eye beneath the surface of the *Li Sao* commentary.
Still, in Moga, one must silence the tongue—all distinctions vanish. In Piyey, lips must be sealed—words themselves cut off. The Honored One speaks nothing; I hear nothing. In future Chan groves, when we meet face to face, handing over family treasures, turn your head—it’s right by your side. Under the monk’s robe, give a shake, and pour out a full measure: each one a jewel from the sea of the Sangha. Why link them as pearls? This writing stands as the preface.
(Dharma Eye) [Additional] National Master Deshao of Tiantai Mountain(Dharma Heir of Fayan) addressed the assembly: "Green vines twist and climb, reaching straight to the top of the chilly pines. White clouds drift calmly, appearing and disappearing within the vast void. The ten thousand things are inherently at ease; only people stir themselves up." Verse: A verse follows.
In compassion, he came for your sake, His tongue dragged on the ground, words like thunderclaps. Tangled vines cover the earth, no one to prune them, Scattered in the spring breeze—another turn of the cycle.
