Chapter 2: King of the First River of Hell, Shiyi Jiang Wang Palace (Shakyamuni Buddha)
By the winding banks of the River of Burial, near the First River of Judgment, stand the official halls in a row. Beyond them lies the great river that must be crossed—this is the Burial River. The crossing for the departed is called the Ford of Nai River. There are three ways across: first, the rushing mountain shallows; second, the deep river abyss; third, the bridge crossing. Before the official hall stands a great tree, named the Garment Collar Tree. Its shade holds two spirits: one called the Robe-Snatching Hag, the other the Garment-Hanging Elder. The Hag spirit punishes those whose karma is theft, bending two of their fingers. The Elder spirit condemns those who are wicked and faithless, pressing head and feet together into one place. When the newly deceased are first brought forth—men carrying women on their backs—the Ox-Headed demon, wielding an iron staff, presses down on both their shoulders and drives them through the swift rapids, until all gather beneath the tree. The Hag spirit strips off their robes, the Elder spirit hangs them on the branches, revealing the weight of their sins, high or low, before they are sent to the hall of the King of the Afterlife. At that time, the Heavenly Worthy spoke this verse:
On the twenty-seventh day, the departed cross the River Naihe, In countless throngs they wade through waves and currents. Ox-Head guides the way, a club pressed on his shoulder, Horse-Head urges them on, a pitchfork raised at his waist. The suffering ox eats the ox—Ox-Head then appears, The ridden horse endures pain—Horse-Head appears in droves. Without clothes, the bitter cold torments their bodies, Elderly ghosts glare with fierce eyes and bare sharp fangs.
