### ▲須菩提尊者

> Venerable Subhuti

在巖中宴坐。諸天雨花讚歎。者曰。空中雨花讚歎。復是何人。云何讚歎。天曰。我是梵天。敬重尊者善說般若。者曰。我於般若未甞說一字。云何讚歎。天曰。如是尊者無說。我乃無聞。無說無聞。是真說般若　尊者一日說法次。帝釋雨花。者乃問。此花從天得耶。從地得耶。從人得耶。釋曰弗也。者曰。從何得耶。釋乃舉手。者曰。如是如是。

> Sitting in serene meditation within a cave, the honored one caused heavenly beings to shower flowers and praise. One asked, "You up in the sky, raining flowers and offering praise—who are you, and why do you praise?" The heavenly being replied, "I am Brahma. I deeply respect the venerable one for his excellent teaching of wisdom." The honored one said, "I have never spoken a single word about wisdom. So why do you praise me?" Brahma answered, "That is precisely the point, venerable one. You have spoken nothing, and I have heard nothing. When there is no speaker and no listener, that is the true teaching of wisdom." Another day, as the honored one was teaching, the king of gods rained flowers upon him. The honored one asked, "Do these flowers come from the sky? Do they come from the earth? Do they come from people?" The king of gods answered, "No." The honored one asked, "Then from where do they come?" The king raised his hand. The honored one said, "Yes, yes. Exactly so."

雲門偃云。帝釋舉手處。與你四大五蘊。釋迦老子。是同是別　妙喜曰。須菩提解空第一。生時家室盡空。世尊纔陞座。須菩提便出眾云。希有世尊。且道見甚麼道理。便恁麼道。天親菩薩作無量偈。只讚希有二字。圜悟禪師云。一句是一個鐵橛。故六祖聞應無所住而生其心。便悟去。

> Yunmen Yan said: "At the point where Indra raises his hand, he gives you the four elements and five aggregates. Is that the same as or different from the old man Shakyamuni?" Miaoxi said: "Subhuti was foremost in understanding emptiness. When he was born, his household became completely empty. As soon as the World-Honored One ascended the seat, Subhuti came forward from the crowd and said: 'How rare, World-Honored One!' Tell me—what insight did he see that made him speak this way? The Bodhisattva Vasubandhu composed countless verses simply to praise the two words 'How rare.' Master Yuanwu Keqin said: 'Each sentence is an iron stake.' That is why the Sixth Patriarch, upon hearing 'One should abide nowhere and let the mind arise,' became enlightened."
