> A man from the land of Huaxia. At first, he was a follower of non-Buddhist paths, with three thousand disciples, and was well-versed in various heterodox teachings. Later, he attained the Dharma under the Venerable Master Ashvaghosha. He led his disciples to Western India, where there was a crown prince named Cloud Sovereign, who revered the master's reputation and invited him to his palace for offerings. The Patriarch said, "The Tathagata has taught that monks should not associate closely with kings, ministers, or families of great power." The prince replied, "North of our capital city lies a great mountain with a stone cave. Would you be able to dwell there in meditation?" The Patriarch agreed and entered the mountain. After walking several miles, he encountered a huge python. The Patriarch advanced directly without any hesitation, and the serpent coiled around his body. The Patriarch then gave it the Three Refuges, and the python listened and departed. As the Patriarch approached the stone cave, an old man dressed in white came out, greeted him with palms together, and paid his respects. The Patriarch asked, "Where do you dwell?" The old man replied, "In the past, I was once a monk who delighted greatly in stillness and solitude. Young monks would often come to seek my guidance, but I grew weary of responding and harbored angry thoughts. When my life ended, I was reborn as a python dwelling in this cave. Now a thousand years have passed. I happened to meet you, Venerable One, and had the opportunity to hear the precepts, so I have come to thank you." The Patriarch asked, "Who else dwells in this mountain?" The old man said, "Ten li from here, there is a great tree that shades five hundred great dragons. Its king, the tree dragon, is named Nagarjuna. He often expounds the Dharma to the dragon assembly, and I too have listened and learned." The Patriarch then led his disciples there. Nagarjuna came out to welcome him and said, "In this deep mountain, solitary and remote, dragons and pythons dwell. Among the lofty and venerable ones, why have you, O noble one, deigned to grace us with your presence?" The Patriarch said, "I am not a noble one, but am here to visit a wise one." Nagarjuna silently thought, "Has this master attained certainty and clarity of vision? Is he a great sage who truly upholds the lineage?" The Patriarch said, "Although you speak in mind, I already know your thoughts. If you but resolve to leave the household life, why worry that I am not a sage?" Hearing this, Nagarjuna felt remorse and apologized. The Patriarch then conferred liberation upon him, and together with the five hundred dragon assembly, they all received full precepts. He further told him, "Now I entrust to you the great Dharma-eye treasury of the Tathagata. Listen carefully to this verse: Neither hidden nor revealed is the Dharma, Spoken as the true reality. Awaken to this Dharma of hidden and revealed, It is neither folly nor wisdom." After transmitting the Dharma, he manifested miraculous powers, transformed his body in fire, and passed away. Nagarjuna collected the five-colored relics and built a stupa. This was in the forty-first year of King Nan's reign, in the year of the Water Dragon.

圭峯云。造無我論一百偈。此論至處。無不摧魔。

> Guifeng said, "Composed a treatise of one hundred verses on the doctrine of no-self. Wherever this treatise reaches, it vanquishes all demons."
