Chapter 1
This is what I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in the city of Savatthi.
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "You should see form as impermanent. Seeing in this way is correct seeing. With correct seeing, one grows weary and detached; with weariness and detachment, delight and craving cease; with the cessation of delight and craving, the mind is said to be liberated."
In this way, observe feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness as impermanent. To observe in this way is to see correctly. Seeing correctly gives rise to disenchantment. With disenchantment, delight and craving cease. When delight and craving cease, the mind is said to be liberated.
Thus, O monks! One whose mind is liberated can, if they wish, personally realize: 'My births are ended, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done. I know for myself that there is no further becoming.'
Just as you observe impermanence, so too should you observe suffering, emptiness, and the absence of a permanent self.
Then, upon hearing the Buddha's words, the monks joyfully accepted and practiced them.
