Chapter 2
This is what I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in the country of Shravasti.
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "You should contemplate form with proper attention, seeing form as impermanent and knowing it as it truly is. Why is that? Monks, for one who contemplates form with proper attention, sees form as impermanent and knows it as it truly is—for such a person, desire and craving for form are cut off. When desire and craving are cut off, this is called the liberation of the mind."
So it is with feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. One should rightly contemplate them, seeing consciousness as impermanent, knowing this as it truly is. Why is that? For one who rightly contemplates consciousness, seeing it as impermanent, cuts off desire and craving for consciousness. When desire and craving are cut off, it is called the liberation of the mind.
When a mind is thus liberated, if one wishes to confirm it for oneself, one can directly realize: “For me, birth is ended, the spiritual life has been fulfilled, what had to be done has been done; I know for myself that there will be no further existence.”
In the same way, one should reflect wisely on impermanence, on suffering, on emptiness, and on not-self.
Then the monks, having heard the Buddha’s teaching, joyfully accepted it and put it into practice.
