Chapter 3
This is what I have heard:
Once, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park, in the city of Śrāvastī.
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "If one does not understand, does not see clearly, does not abandon, and does not let go of desire for form, then one cannot end suffering. It is the same with feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness: if one does not understand, does not see clearly, does not abandon, and does not let go of desire for them, then one cannot end suffering."
Monks, if you truly know form, see it clearly, let it go, and free yourself from desire for it, you can cut off suffering. The same is true for feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness: if you truly know them, see them clearly, let them go, and free yourself from desire for them, you are capable of cutting off suffering.
Then, the monks, hearing the Buddha's teaching, joyfully undertook to practice it.
