This is what I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park, in the city of Śrāvastī.

At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "If one does not know, does not clearly understand, does not cut off, and does not let go of desire for form, and if one's mind is not liberated, then one cannot go beyond the fear of birth, aging, sickness, and death. It is the same with feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. If one does not know, does not clearly understand, does not cut off, and does not let go of desire and craving for them, and if one's mind is not liberated, then one cannot go beyond the fear of birth, aging, sickness, and death."

Monks, if you truly know, clearly see, abandon, and free yourselves from desire for form, you will cross beyond the fear of birth, aging, sickness, and death. Monks, if you truly know, clearly see, and free your minds from desire and greed, you will cross beyond the fear of birth, aging, sickness, and death. The same is true for feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness: if you truly know, clearly see, abandon, and free your minds from desire and greed, you will cross beyond the fear of birth, aging, sickness, and death.

The monks, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully accepted it and put it into practice.
