Samyukta Āgama (雜阿含經)

This is what I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in the city of Shravasti.

At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks:

"If you delight in form, you delight in suffering. One who delights in suffering cannot be freed from suffering; they do not understand it, nor do they let go of desire.

"It is the same with feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. If you delight in these, you delight in suffering. One who delights in suffering cannot be freed from suffering."

Monks, if you do not delight in form, you do not delight in suffering. If you do not delight in suffering, you are freed from suffering.

The same is true for feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. If you do not delight in them, you do not delight in suffering. If you do not delight in suffering, you are freed from suffering.

Monks, if you do not truly know and understand form, if you do not abandon desire and craving for it, and if your mind is not liberated from it, then you cannot put an end to suffering. The same is true for feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. If you do not truly know and understand them, if you do not abandon desire and craving for them, and if your mind is not liberated from them, then you cannot put an end to suffering.

If you truly know form, see it clearly, and free your heart from craving and attachment, you can end suffering. The same is true for feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness—if you truly know them, see them clearly, and free your heart from craving and attachment, you can end suffering.

Then the monks, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully undertook to practice it.
