This is what I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in the city of Savatthi.

At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "For one who does not know, does not understand, and does not abandon desire and craving for form, whose mind is not liberated—such a one cannot cross beyond the fear of birth, aging, sickness, and death. So too for feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness: for one who does not know, does not understand, and does not abandon desire and craving for them, whose mind is not liberated—such a one cannot cross beyond the fear of birth, aging, sickness, and death."

Monks, regarding form: if you know it, understand it, and are freed in mind through letting go of desire and craving for it, then you can cross beyond the fear of birth, aging, sickness, and death.

The same is true for feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness: if you know them, understand them, and are freed in mind through letting go of desire and craving for them, then you can cross beyond the fear of birth, aging, sickness, and death.

The monks, having heard the Buddha's teaching, rejoiced and undertook to practice it.
