Master Xiuyan Shirui of Ayuwang Monastery in Siming
The Master ascended the hall and cited Reverend Daowu's saying: "Height is not on the peak's summit. Wealth is not at Fuyan. Joy is not in paradise. Suffering is not in hell. Acquaintances fill the world—how many truly know your heart?"
Dahui和尚 said: "Height is on the peak's summit. Wealth is at Fuyan. Joy is in paradise. Suffering is in hell. Who would know that under the straw hat is none other than the same old person?"
The Master said: "Great assembly, these two venerable masters each responded to circumstances without fault. Yet for those in the Zen school, they haven't even dreamed of it. Tell me—what is it really like within the Zen school?"
After a long pause, he said: "If one is not a true friend, it's futile to speak of the cold winter years."
The Master ascended the hall and cited the story of Guanxi visiting Linji. Linji grabbed hold of Guanxi, and Guanxi said, "I understand, I understand." Linji then pushed him away. The Master composed a verse:
"After the rain scatters and clouds withdraw, Dozens of towering peaks remain. Leaning on the railing, I gaze about— Turning back, who walks the same path?"
