> Zen Master Zhi Shao of Shian, Gushan, Fuzhou

> A monk asked, "The state of sitting through clouds and mountains is already clear, but the drifting clouds and waters remain vast and boundless. Today, Shimen has opened a single thread, so one returns home adorned in fine clothes. How should the song of returning home be sung?" The Master said, "It is rare to meet someone who knows the tune." The monk said, "But what about the rope on the nose still being in another's hands?" The Master said, "Tell me, who is that other?" The monk said, "Even he doesn't recognize himself." The Master said, "Vaguely like Yue, seemingly like Yangzhou." The monk said, "What about a single phrase before stepping into Shimen?" The Master said, "A hundred scattered fragments." The monk said, "What about a single phrase after stepping into Shimen?" The Master said, "Still the same, an undivided whole." The monk said, "Then the Great Summit Peak nods in agreement, and Gushan's steep cliffs tremble." The Master said, "That is not beyond expectation." The monk said, "At this moment, State Preceptor Yan claps his hands and laughs heartily, saying, 'How fortunate to have met the Master here!'" The Master said, "It is no accident that adversaries gather." The monk bowed. The Master said, "I'll spare you thirty strikes." The Master ascended the hall and thanked Layman Li Shenqing and Layman Chen Zhongling. "In the past, by the Eastern Stream, when flowers bloomed and leaves fell, I often thought of casting a golden statue of Zhong Ziqi." The Master said, "The ancients spoke thus, much like a burnt zither hanging on the wall, rarely meeting one who knows its tune. Today, Baiyun is fortunate to have these two laymen arrive, just as the six directions are clear and all sounds are still. I cannot help but tune the strings once more and play a single tune." He struck his staff horizontally and said, "Do you all hear it? Hearing it is not impossible, but tell me, what tune is this?" He struck the staff and said, "The ancient sound, vast beyond words—after the one who knows it hears it, who else could know?" The Master ascended the hall and said, "Words are slander. Silence is also wrong. Neither speaking nor silence only adds more illusion." He gave a shout and said, "The spring breeze blows down peach and plum blossoms; light mist and sparse rain veil the blue peaks." In commenting on Zen Master Zhaozhou's "Zhenzhou turnip" story, he said: "A little livelihood at the edge of the lips— Touch it, and it's swift as wind, swift as lightning. Do not speak of the Zhenzhou turnip's size— He never truly saw Old Nanquan in person."
