> Kshitigarbha Sutra Chapter 2, Part 1: Uttarakuru Continent

> Monks, on the continent of Uttarakuru there are countless mountains. In those mountains there are many kinds of trees, lush and overgrown, emitting various fragrances that spread and fill the entire continent. Various kinds of grass grow there, all a deep blue-green color, curling to the right like peacock feathers. The grass has a fragrance like the Sumana flower, and is as soft to the touch as Kasi cloth. It grows exactly four fingers tall. When stepped on, it bends down; when the foot lifts, it springs back up. There are also many kinds of fruit trees of different colors, all with diverse stems, leaves, blossoms, and fruits, giving off various scents that spread far and wide. Many different birds each sing their own songs, the sounds gentle, elegant, and sublime. In those mountains, there are many rivers. Hundreds of streams flow and spread out, running smoothly downwards, quietly and steadily advancing, neither too fast nor too slow, without waves. The banks are not deep, the water is shallow and easy to cross. The water is clear and pure, covered with various flowers. The rivers are half a yojana wide, the currents flowing fully along their courses. On both sides of these rivers are various forests growing along the water, their branches and leaves giving shade and cover. There are many fragrant blossoms, diverse fruits, a carpet of green grass, and numerous birds singing in harmony. Furthermore, on the riverbanks there are many wonderful boats, adorned with various colors, exceptionally beautiful and delightful. They are all made of the seven precious substances: gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, red pearls, agate, and carnelian.

> Monks, the land of Uttarakuru is level and smooth, free of thorns, deep thickets, pits, latrines, filth, gravel, or rubble. The ground is pure gold and silver, with a climate neither cold nor hot, harmoniously tempered. The earth is always moist, covered by lush green grass. All kinds of forest trees have ever-fresh branches and leaves, bearing abundant flowers and fruit. Monks, in Uttarakuru there is also a forest called Anzhu (Peaceful Dwelling). The trees there are all six krosas high<note>One krosa is five li (approx. 2.5 km)</note>, with dense, layered leaves overlapping like a thatched roof, so that no raindrops leak through. The people live under these trees. There are fragrant trees, also six krosas—or five, four, three, two, or one krosa—with the smallest half a krosa high. All of them have various branches, leaves, flowers, and fruit, and from them, according to one’s wish, flow all kinds of fragrances. There are also kalpavriksha trees, likewise six krosas high, down to half a krosa. They, too, bear various branches, leaves, flowers, and fruit, and from the fruit naturally emerge all kinds of clothing, hanging among the branches. There are trees that bear garlands of jewelry, also six krosas high, down to half a krosa. From their fruit, according to one’s wish, come various ornamented garlands that hang down. There are trees that bear flower garlands (māla), also six krosas high, down to half a krosa. From their fruit come various garland shapes, hanging on the trees. There are trees that bear vessels, also six krosas high, down to half a krosa. From their fruit come various vessel shapes, hanging on the trees. There are trees that bear mixed fruits, also six krosas high, down to half a krosa. From their fruit come a variety of fruits, hanging on the trees. There are also musical instrument trees, also six krosas high, down to half a krosa. From their fruit come various musical instruments, hanging among the trees. The land also naturally produces rice, without any need for farming—pure, white, clean, and without husk or bran. When people wish to cook and eat it, there is a special fruit called Dunchi (dhūpa) that serves as a pot. They light it with a fire jewel; without needing firewood or charcoal, a flame naturally appears, allowing them to cook whatever food they desire as they wish. Once the food is cooked, the jewel’s flame goes out.

> Monks, the land of Uttarakuru is surrounded on four sides by four pools of water. Each pool is named Anavatapta, measuring fifty yojanas in length and breadth. The water in these pools is cool and refreshing, soft and light, sweet and fragrant, clear and pure. They are surrounded by seven layers of brick walls, seven layers of stone slabs, seven layers of railings, and seven layers of bell nets hanging all around. Seven rows of palm trees encircle them, appearing in various colors and pleasant to behold. They are made of the seven treasures: gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, red pearls, conch shells, and agate stones. On each of the four sides of the pools, there are stairways and paths, each also made of the seven treasures, interwoven with various colors. There are various flowers: utpala, padma, kumuda, and puṇḍarīka, in colors such as blue, yellow, red, white, and pale blue. Each flower is as large as a chariot wheel, emitting a delicate and supreme fragrance. There are also lotus roots as thick as chariot axles; when broken open, they ooze juice as white as milk, tasting as sweet as honey, delicious to eat.

> "Monks, from the four sides of Lake Anavatasta flow four great rivers, each a yojana wide. They are covered with an abundance of flowers, and their waters flow gently, straight without curves, neither too swift nor too slow, without waves or rapid currents. The banks are not high, but level and easy to approach. On both riverbanks grow various kinds of forests, with intertwining branches that shade the waters and emit wonderful fragrances. Various types of grass grow beside them, green in color and soft, curling to the right—to briefly describe it, reaching up to four finger-lengths in height. When stepped on, the grass lowers with the foot, and when lifted, it returns to its original form. There are also various birds producing a multitude of sounds. Along the riverbanks there are also many boats, colorful and delightful, made of the seven treasures including gold, silver, and agate. When touched, they feel as soft as Kācilindika cloth."

> Monks, in the northern continent of Uttarakuru, thick clouds often form around midnight, rising from the four pools of Lake Anavatapta. These clouds spread and fully cover the entire continent of Uttarakuru, along with its mountains and seas. Then, a rain of eight wonderful qualities falls, as brief as the time it takes to milk a cow, soaking the ground to a depth of four finger-widths. The water soaks directly into the earth without flowing away. Later that same midnight, the rain stops and the clouds clear, leaving the sky pure and bright. A wind arises from the sea, blowing across this sweet moisture. It is cool, gentle, smooth, and pleasant to the touch. This rain nourishes the continent of Uttarakuru, making it fertile, rich, and balanced. It’s like a skilled garland maker or his apprentice who, after completing a garland, sprinkles it with water to make it shine. That garland becomes glossy and vivid. Monks, the land of Uttarakuru is also always moist, radiant, and glossy, just as if it were constantly anointed with ghee. Furthermore, monks, in Uttarakuru there is a lake called Sudarshana. This lake is one hundred \*yojanas\* wide and long. It is cool, gentle, pure, and free from turbidity. It is lined with bricks made of seven precious substances, and its lotus roots taste sweet like honey. Monks, to the east of Lake Sudarshana there is a pleasure grove, also called Sudarshana. This grove is one hundred \*yojanas\* wide and long. It is surrounded by seven rows of railings, seven rows of bells and nets, and seven rows of palm trees. These are arranged in a circle, beautiful and delightful, and are entirely made of the seven treasures: gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, coral, ruby, and emerald. On each side, there are gates, and each gate has a watchtower. These are also beautifully colored and made of the same seven precious materials. Monks, that Sudarshana grove is level and majestic. It has no thorns, hills, pits, stones, gravel, or any impure things like latrines. It is filled with many different precious metals. The climate is balanced, neither cold nor hot. Springs and streams constantly flow throughout the area. Trees are lush with leaves, and flowers and fruits are abundant. A variety of fragrances drift with the wind. Many different kinds of birds sing beautiful, harmonious, and clear songs. There is a type of blue-green grass, curly and soft, sleek like peacock feathers, with a fragrance like \*Baliśa\* flowers. It feels as smooth as \*Kācindi\* cloth. When you step on it, the grass rises and falls with your step. There are also many trees with roots, trunks, leaves, flowers, and fruits, all emitting various fragrances that perfume the whole land. In the midst of the Sudarshana grove, there is a forest called \*Shātāna\*. The trees in this forest are as tall as six \*kroshas\*. Their leaves are so dense and layered that rain cannot get through, overlapping like a thatched roof. Under these trees, people can live and rest. There are also fragrant trees, \*kalpavṛkṣa\* (wish-fulfilling) trees, garland trees, trees for jewelry, clothing, bowls, and fruit trees. There is even naturally occurring cooked rice that is clean and delicious. Monks, that Sudarshana grove has no owner, no master, and no guardian. When the people of Uttarakuru wish to enter this grove to freely enjoy themselves, they can enter through any of the four gates. Once inside, they can play, bathe, and enjoy all pleasures to their heart's content. When they wish to leave, they go; when they wish to stay, they stay. They are completely free and at ease.

> "Monks, south of the Good Manifest Lake there is another park for the people of Uttarakuru, called Universal Virtue Park. This park extends one hundred yojanas in both directions and is encircled by seven layers of railings. Even the cooked rice there is pure, clean, and wonderfully delicious. Monks, this Universal Virtue Park is also unguarded. When the people of Uttarakuru wish to enter this park to bathe, play, or enjoy themselves, they may freely enter through any of its four gates. After entering, they can bathe, play, and find delight. When they have finished enjoying themselves, they may leave as they wish or stay as they wish."

> "Monks, to the west of Lake Good Appearance, there is another park for the people of Uttarakuru, called the Park of Good Flowers. It measures one hundred yojanas in length and breadth, surrounded by seven rows of railings. In short, it is no different from the Park of Good Appearance, and likewise, there are no guards watching over it. When the people of Uttarakuru wish to enter the Park of Good Flowers to bathe, play, and enjoy themselves, they may enter freely through any of its four gates. Once inside, they bathe, play, and take their pleasure. After enjoying themselves, they may leave whenever they wish or stay as long as they like."

> Monks, for the people of Uttarakuru, there is another park to the north of the Shining Lake, called the Joyful Park. It extends a hundred leagues in width and length, and it is also without any guards. When the people of Uttarakuru wish to enter the Joyful Park to bathe, play, and enjoy happiness, they may enter freely from any of its four gates. Once inside, they bathe, play, and enjoy themselves. After they have taken their pleasure, they may leave if they wish to leave, or stay if they wish to stay, just as was described earlier for the Shining Park and such.

> "Monks, for the people of Uttarakuru, between the Lake of Good Manifestation to the east and the Garden of Good Manifestation, there is a river named the Easy-Path. It flows gently downstream, without waves, neither slow nor fast, and is completely covered with various flowers. It is two and a half yojanas wide. Monks, along both banks of the Easy-Path River grow many kinds of trees. Their branches and leaves provide abundant shade, emitting various fragrances that perfume the entire area. Many kinds of grasses grow there—simply put, touching them feels as soft as Kācalindika fabric. They are about four fingers high, and when stepped on, they yield and rise with each step. There are also many multicolored fruit trees, complete with leaves, flowers, and fruits. Their fragrance pervades the air. Various rare birds sing in harmony. Along the riverbanks are many fine boats, delightfully colored, made of the seven treasures: gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, red pearls, conch, and agate, all beautifully adorned."

> Monks, to the south of the Lake of Excellent Manifestation, for the sake of the people of Uttarakuru, there is a great river called Excellent Body. It flows gradually downstream, much like the Easy Entry River. The various forests there are no different from that, and even the boats, made of many colors, are as soft as Kācalindika cloth. Monks, to the west of the Lake of Excellent Manifestation, for the sake of the people of Uttarakuru, there is a great river called Equal Chariot, which also flows gradually downstream. Monks, to the north of the Lake of Excellent Manifestation, for the sake of the people of Uttarakuru, there is a great river called Mighty Lord, which also flows gradually downstream. To describe it briefly, on both banks there are boats adorned with the seven treasures, as soft as Kācalindika cloth. Here is a verse summary:

> "Excellent Manifestation, Universal Virtue, and so forth, Wondrous Flower, Delight, Easy Entry, Fine Essence, Equal Chariot, Awesome Lord, and River."

> Monks, when the people of Uttarakuru wish to enter the rivers—the Easy-Entry River, the Good-Embodiment River, the Equal-Chariot River, or the Mighty-Lord River—to bathe, play, and enjoy themselves, they simply go to the banks of those rivers. There, they take off their clothes, leave them on the shore, get into boats, and row out into the water. They bathe their bodies, play, and enjoy themselves. After bathing, whoever gets out first simply takes any robe that is there, puts it on, and leaves. They do not search for the clothes they previously wore. Why is that? Because the people of Uttarakuru have no sense of "mine" or "self," and nothing is kept under guard. Next, these people go to the Fragrant Trees. Upon arriving, the trees naturally lower their branches, offering all kinds of exquisite fragrances within easy reach. The people take these various fragrances and apply them to their bodies. Then, they proceed to the Cloth Trees, where the branches likewise lower, offering different kinds of clothing for them to take. From these trees, they take fine garments, put them on, and continue on. They then go to the Jeweled Ornament Trees. These, too, bow down their branches, letting out fine jewelry and adornments for them to take. The people string these ornaments on themselves and move on to the Garland Trees. The Garland Trees also bend their branches down, offering beautiful flower garlands. The people take them, place them on their heads, and proceed to the Vessel Trees. There, the branches bow down, offering various containers at hand. Taking whatever vessel they need, they go to the Fruit Trees. At the Fruit Trees, the branches once again bend low, providing sweet, ripe fruits for them to pick. They take the ripe fruits and eat them to their satisfaction. Some squeeze the fruits and drink the juice from their vessels. After eating and drinking, they go to the Musical Instrument Grove. There, the branches lower, providing all kinds of musical instruments. The people pick the instruments they desire, each beautifully shaped and melodious. They take them, embrace them, and go about playing. They dance, they sing, do whatever they please. When their enjoyment is done, each person stays or leaves according to their own preference.

> This sutra is known in the Song Canon as the "Scripture on the Origins of the World," translated by Jnanagupta. It was treated as a later text and placed in the "Qu" section. In the Dan Canon, it is simply titled the "Scripture on the Arising of the World," which placed it earlier in the collection. Upon consulting the \*Kaiyuan Catalog\*, it was confirmed that the Dan Canon's version is correct. Therefore, the two characters "Origins of" have been removed from the title, and this text has now been moved forward into the "Cheng" section.
