### 起世經阿修羅品第六之一

> Chapter 6: Asuras (Part 1)

爾時，佛告諸比丘言：「比丘！須彌山王東面，去山過千由旬，大海之下，有鞞摩質多羅阿修羅王國土住處。其處縱廣八萬由旬，七重城壁周匝圍繞、七重欄楯，普遍莊嚴，乃至七重金銀鈴網，周圍挍飾。外有七重多羅行樹，雜色可觀，皆是七寶所共合成，謂金銀琉璃、頗梨赤珠、硨𤦲瑪瑙。一一城壁，高百由旬，厚五十由旬。城壁四面，各各相去五百由旬，則置一門，其門並高三十由旬、闊十二由旬。於一一門，悉有種種却敵樓櫓園苑陂池，諸園苑中各各皆有種種果樹。其樹各有種種葉、種種花、種種果，其果各有種種異香，其氣遠熏。復有種種雜類眾鳥，各各和鳴，出種種聲，其音哀雅。諸比丘！彼阿修羅大城之中，為鞞摩質多羅阿修羅王別立宮殿，其宮名曰設摩婆帝宮城，縱廣一萬由旬，七重城壁，並是七寶之所合成，高百由旬，厚五十由旬。於城四面各各相去五百由旬，便置一門，諸門並高三十由旬，闊十二由旬。其一一門，亦有樓櫓却敵臺閣、園苑陂池、諸花沼等。復有種種眾雜果樹，其樹各有種種葉、種種花、種種果、種種香，其香普熏。有種種鳥，各各和鳴，出種種聲，其音哀雅。

> At that time, the Buddha addressed the monks, saying: “Monks, on the eastern side of Mount Sumeru, over a thousand yojanas beyond the mountain, beneath the great ocean, lies the realm and dwelling of the asura king Vemachitrin. This realm extends eight thousand yojanas in width and length, encircled by seven layers of city walls, adorned with seven layers of railings, and bedecked with seven layers of golden and silver bells and nets. Outside these are seven rows of tala trees, colorful and pleasing to the eye, all made from the seven treasures—gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, red pearls, conch, and agate. Each city wall is one hundred yojanas high and fifty yojanas thick. On the four sides of the wall, every five hundred yojanas, a gate is placed. Each gate is thirty yojanas high and twelve yojanas wide. At each gate are various defensive towers, gardens, ponds, and pools. In each garden grow many kinds of fruit trees, with diverse leaves, blossoms, and fruits, each fruit emitting a distinct fragrance that wafts far and wide. There are also many species of birds, whose harmonious calls produce varied, sorrowfully beautiful sounds. Monks, within that great city of the asuras, a separate palace has been built for King Vemachitrin, named Shaimavati Palace. It is ten thousand yojanas wide and long, with seven layers of walls, all fashioned from the seven treasures. The walls are one hundred yojanas high and fifty yojanas thick. On the four sides, every five hundred yojanas, a gate is placed. Each gate is thirty yojanas high and twelve yojanas wide. At every gate, there are also towers, defensive structures, terraces, gardens, ponds, and lotus pools, along with many types of fruit trees. These trees have diverse leaves, blossoms, and fruits, each with a unique fragrance that permeates the surroundings. Various birds sing in harmony, producing sorrowfully beautiful sounds.

「諸比丘！設摩婆帝城內正處中央，為鞞摩質多羅阿修羅王，置集會處，名曰七頭。其處縱廣五百由旬，七重欄楯，周圍校飾，亦有七重金銀鈴網。其外七重多羅行樹，四方圍繞，雜色莊嚴，甚可愛樂，悉是金銀頗梨、珊瑚赤珠、硨𤦲瑪瑙七寶所成。其處四面各有諸門，一一諸門樓櫓却敵，亦是七寶之所合成，雜色間錯，令人樂觀。其地皆是紺青琉璃，柔軟細滑，觸之猶如迦旃隣提迦衣。

> "Monks, in the very center of the city of Shemotati, King Vemachitri the Asura established a council hall called 'Seven-Headed'. This hall was five hundred yojanas wide, surrounded by seven layers of railings adorned with gold, silver, and bells. Outside were seven rows of palm trees, all beautifully decorated. The entire structure was made from gold, silver, crystal, coral, red pearls, conch, and agate. Each side had gates, with towers and battlements also made from these seven precious materials. The varied colors brought great joy. The ground was dark blue beryl - soft, smooth, and touching it felt like the finest Kashika cloth.

「諸比丘！彼阿修羅七頭會處，當中自然有一寶柱，高二十由旬，於寶柱下，為鞞摩質多羅阿修羅王，安立寶座。高一由旬，方半由旬，硨𤦲瑪瑙七寶所成，雜色間錯，甚可愛樂，柔軟細滑，觸之猶如迦旃隣提迦衣。其座兩邊，各有十六小阿修羅所坐之處，亦以七寶之所成就，所謂金銀乃至瑪瑙，雜色可觀，柔軟細滑，觸之猶如迦旃隣提迦衣。

> “Monks, in the great assembly hall of the Asuras where the seven-headed leaders gather, there naturally appears a jeweled pillar, twenty yojanas tall. At the foot of this pillar, a jeweled throne is established for the Asura king Vemacitrin. The throne is one yojana high and half a yojana wide, made of the seven treasures—coral, agate, and others—inlaid with a beautiful array of colors. It is extremely delightful, soft, and smooth to the touch, like the finest Kācalindika cloth. On each side of this throne are sixteen seats for the lesser Asuras, likewise formed from the seven treasures—gold, silver, even agate—with a lovely interplay of colors. They are soft and smooth to the touch, just like the Kācalindika cloth.”

「諸比丘！彼阿修羅七頭會處，東面有鞞摩質多羅阿修羅王宮，其處縱廣一千由旬，七重垣牆、七重欄楯、七重鈴網。外有七重多羅行樹，四面周匝，莊嚴圍繞，雜色間錯，甚可愛樂，亦是七寶之所成就，所謂金銀琉璃、頗梨赤珠、硨𤦲瑪瑙。於四方面，各有諸門，一一諸門，皆有樓櫓却敵臺閣、園苑陂池、諸花沼等。復有諸樹，其樹各有種種葉，種種花、種種果、種種香，其香普熏。有種種鳥，各各和鳴，出種種聲，其音哀雅。

> "Monks, the Asura King Vemacitrin's palace is located at the east side of the seven-headed asura assembly hall. This palace is a thousand yojanas in length and width. (A yojana is a vast ancient unit of distance.) It is enclosed by seven walls, seven railings, and seven rows of bells and nets. Outside these, there are seven rows of palm trees circling around on all four sides, creating a beautiful and decorated border with a dazzling array of colors. The palace is made of the seven precious materials: gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, red pearls, conch, and agate. On each of its four sides, there are multiple gates, and every gate is equipped with towers, battlements, terraces, gardens, ponds, and various flower lakes. Additionally, there are trees, each bearing a variety of leaves, flowers, fruits, and fragrances whose scents spread everywhere. Various kinds of birds live there, singing together in harmonious and elegant melodies."

「諸比丘！彼阿修羅七頭會處，南西北方，各有宮殿，皆是諸小阿修羅王所住之處，其處縱廣或九百由旬，或八百、七百、六百、五百、四百、三百、二百由旬，其最小者，猶尚縱廣一百由旬，七重垣牆，略說乃至種種眾鳥，各各和鳴。

> "Monks, in the hall of the Seven-headed Meeting Place of the Asuras, there are palaces to the south, west, and north. Each is the dwelling of the lesser Asura kings. These palaces span either nine hundred yojanas, or eight hundred, seven hundred, six hundred, five hundred, four hundred, three hundred, or two hundred yojanas. Even the smallest of them still spans one hundred yojanas. They have seven layers of walls, and to put it briefly, are adorned with various birds, each singing in harmony."

「復次，諸比丘！彼阿修羅七頭會處四面，復有一切最小阿修羅等所住宮殿，其處縱廣或九十由旬，或八十七十、六十五十、四十三十、二十由旬，最極小者，猶尚縱廣十二由旬，七重垣牆，略說乃至有種種鳥，各各和鳴。

> "Furthermore, monks, on the four sides of the assembly hall of the Seven-Headed Asuras, there are also palaces where all the smallest Asuras reside. These palaces range in size, some being ninety yojanas wide, others eighty, seventy, sixty, fifty, forty, thirty, or even twenty yojanas. The smallest among them is at least twelve yojanas wide. Each palace is surrounded by seven layers of walls, and, in brief, there are various kinds of birds singing harmoniously together."

「諸比丘！彼阿修羅七頭會處東面，有鞞摩質多羅阿修羅王苑，名娑羅林。其林縱廣一千由旬，七重垣牆、七重欄楯、七重鈴網，皆瑪瑙等七寶所成。於四方面，各有諸門，一一諸門，樓櫓却敵，雜色可觀，亦是七寶之所成就，所謂金銀乃至瑪瑙。

> Monks, to the east of the Seventh Asura Assembly Hall lies the park of the Asura king Vemacitra, called the Sala Grove. This grove is a thousand yojanas in length and breadth. It is surrounded by seven layers of walls, seven layers of railings, and seven layers of decorative nets, all made of the seven treasures—such as agate. On each of its four sides there are various gates, each gate flanked by towers and battlements. These are colorful and pleasing to behold, likewise made of the seven treasures, namely gold, silver, pearl, and so on up to agate.

「諸比丘！彼阿修羅七頭會處南面，復有鞞摩質多羅阿修羅王苑，名奢摩梨林。其林縱廣亦千由旬，七重垣牆、七重欄楯、七重鈴網，並瑪瑙等七寶所成。於四方面，各有諸門，一一諸門，皆有樓櫓，雜色可觀，亦為七寶之所成就，所謂金銀乃至瑪瑙。

> "Monks, to the south of the Asuras' Assembly place of Seven Heads lies the park of Vemachitrin, the Asura king, called the Shamali Grove. This grove stretches a thousand yojanas in both length and width, surrounded by seven layers of walls, seven layers of railings, and seven layers of bell nets, all made of the seven treasures, including carnelian. On each of the four sides, there are gates, each with watchtowers of varied and pleasing colors, also formed from the seven treasures: gold, silver, and up to carnelian."

「諸比丘！彼阿修羅七頭會處北面，亦有鞞摩質多羅阿修羅王苑，名難陀那林。其林縱廣亦千由旬，七重垣牆、七重欄楯、七重鈴網，皆瑪瑙等七寶所成。於四方面，各有諸門，一一諸門，並皆具有樓櫓却敵，雜色可觀，乃至悉是硨𤦲瑪瑙，諸珍寶物之所成就。然此諸門，唯無臺閣，自餘莊嚴，與前同等。

> Monks, to the north of the Asura Council of the Seven Heads lies the garden of the Asura King Vemacitrin, named Nandana Grove. This grove spans a thousand leagues in both length and width, surrounded by seven walls, seven rows of railings, and seven nets of bells, all made from the seven treasures like agate. On each of its four sides are gates, each flanked by watchtowers and defensive bastions, adorned in vibrant hues, all crafted from gems and treasures like conch and agate. These gates lack pavilions, but otherwise their embellishments match those of the other gardens.

「諸比丘！其娑羅林、奢摩梨林，二林之間，鞞摩質多羅阿修羅王，有一大池，名曰難陀。其池縱廣五百由旬，水甚涼冷，澄潔輕美，常不渾濁。七種寶塼，廁填間錯，七重板砌、七重欄楯、七重鈴網，周匝懸垂。其外七重多羅行樹，四面圍繞，雜色可觀，皆瑪瑙等七寶所成。於四方面，各有階道，雜色間錯，令人樂觀，亦為七寶之所成就。復有諸花，遍生池中，所謂優鉢羅花、鉢頭摩花、究牟陀花、奔茶利花。形如火者，火色火光；形如金者，金色金光；其形青者，青色青光；其形赤者，赤色赤光；其形白者，白色白光；其形綠者，綠色綠光。團如車輪，其花光明，照一由旬。香氣所熏，亦一由旬。池中又出無量藕根，大如車軸，割之汁出，色白如乳，其味甘美，猶如上蜜。

> Monks, between the Sala forest and the Shamali forest lies a great lake belonging to the Asura king Vemacitrin, called Nanda. This lake is five hundred leagues wide. Its water is cool, clear, light, and delicious, never becoming muddy. The lake is lined with seven kinds of precious bricks set in an intricate pattern. It has seven layers of paving, seven layers of railings, and seven layers of bell nets hanging all around. Outside these are seven rows of palm trees, encircling it on all four sides. They are colorful and pleasing to the eye, all made from the seven treasures, including agate. On each of the four sides, there are stairways, colorful and intricate, delightful to behold, also made from the seven treasures. Many kinds of lotus flowers grow throughout the lake: the blue lotus, the pink lotus, the yellow lotus, and the white lotus. Those with the color of fire are fiery-hued and radiant; those golden are golden-colored and golden-gleaming; the blue are blue-hued with blue light; the red are red with a red glow; the white are white with white radiance; the green are green with green luster. They are as large as chariot wheels. The light from these flowers shines for one league, and their fragrance likewise carries for one league. Countless lotus roots also grow in the lake, as large as chariot axles. When cut, they produce a juice as white as milk, tasting sweet like fine honey.

「諸比丘！其俱毘陀羅及難陀那，二林中間，鞞摩質多羅阿修羅王，有一大樹，名蘇質怛邏波吒羅。其本周圍滿七由旬，根下入地二十一由旬，其身上出高百由旬，枝葉蔭覆五十由旬，其院周迴五百由旬，其外亦有七重垣牆，略說乃至周匝圍繞，雜色可觀，及硨𤦲瑪瑙等七寶所成。於四方面亦有諸門，並皆七寶之所成就，一一諸門亦有樓櫓却敵，略說乃至種種眾鳥，各各和鳴。

> "Monks, in the forest between Mount Kumbhira and the Nandana Grove, the Asura king Vemacitrin has a great tree called Sucitrā Patāra. Its trunk circumference measures seven yojanas, its roots extend twenty-one yojanas into the earth, its trunk rises one hundred yojanas high, its branches and leaves provide shade for fifty yojanas, and its grounds extend five hundred yojanas in circumference. Outside this area, there are seven layers of walls encircling it—in brief, they are colorful and pleasing to behold, made of seven precious materials like conch-shell and coral. On the four sides, there are also gates, all fashioned from these seven treasures. Each gate has towers and battlements—and in brief, various birds sing in harmonious chorus."
