> Chapter 6: Asuras (Continued)

> “Monastics, at the Seven-Headed Assembly Hall of the Asuras, there are two paths, designed for the king’s travel and recreation. Likewise, at the palace of King Vemacitrin of the Asuras, there are also two paths. The palaces of the lesser Asura kings also have two paths; the residences of the lesser Asuras also have two paths; the Sala forest grove also has two paths; the Shamali forest grove also has two paths; the Kovilara forest grove also has two paths; the Nandana forest grove also has two paths; beside the Nanda pond, there are also two paths; and beneath the great Sucitrala-potala tree, there are also two paths. All of these, just like the Seven-Headed Assembly Hall, are connected for passage to and from.”

> "Monks, when the Asura king Vemacitrin desires to go to the Sala, Samali, Kovitara, or Nandana gardens to bathe, play, and delight himself, at that moment he thinks of the lesser Asura kings and their followers. Then those lesser Asura kings and their followers also think, 'The Asura king Vemacitrin is thinking of us.' Knowing this, they adorn themselves with various jeweled garlands and ornaments, mount all kinds of vehicles, and come to the gate of Vemacitrin's palace. Having arrived, they dismount and stand before the Asura king Vemacitrin in his hall."

> At that time, King Vemacitrin of the Asuras, seeing all the lesser Asura kings and their followers assembled before his palace, adorned himself with various garlands and ornaments. Once adorned, he rose and mounted his vehicle. Then, all the lesser Asura kings and their followers served as his attendants, surrounding him on all sides, guiding him from front and back, and escorting him as they proceeded together to the Sala Grove, the Samali Grove, the Kovidara Grove, and the Nandana Grove. Upon arriving, they first halted and rested before the Nandana Grove.

> “Monks, inside the Nandana Grove, three kinds of wind current naturally arise to adorn the garden. What are these three? They are: opening, cleaning, and scattering. What is meant by ‘opening’? A wind current comes and opens all the gates—this is called opening. What is meant by ‘cleaning’? A wind current comes and sweeps the grove, making the ground clean—this is called cleaning. What is meant by ‘scattering’? A wind current comes and blows through the grove, causing the trees and various flowers to drift and scatter in all directions—this is called scattering. Monks, in the Nandana Grove, the wind scatters a variety of exquisite flowers, piling them up to knee height. They give off all kinds of fragrances, whose sweet scent permeates the entire garden. At that time, King Vemacitrin, along with the lesser Asura kings and a host of Asuras, gather and enter the Nandana Grove together to bathe freely, enjoy the sights, and amuse themselves. The Asuras stay in this garden for one month, two months, or three months, bathing and playing at will, lingering and wandering as they please, indulging in every pleasure.”

> Monks, there are five Asuras who constantly reside beside the Asura King Vemacitrin, tasked with guarding against all evil deeds. Who are these five? The first is named Joyful, the second Constant Presence, the third Ever-Intoxicated, the fourth Mucilinda, and the fifth Vihaḍāra. Monks, the Asura King Vemacitrin has these five Asuras always by his side, watching over and protecting him. Monks, above the palace of the Asura King Vemacitrin lies the great ocean, ten thousand leagues deep, resting atop it. Yet this vast body of water is naturally sustained by four kinds of wind wheels. What are these four? The first is called Steadiness, the second Stability, the third Non-Collapse, and the fourth Firmness. Supported by these winds, the water remains constant and unmoving.

> "Monks, on the southern side of Mount Sumeru, over a thousand yojanas beneath the great ocean, lies the palace and dwelling of the 'Unyielding Asura King.' This place is eighty thousand yojanas in breadth and length, with seven layers of walls—briefly, it is much like the dwelling of Vemacitra Asura King, and all other features here correspond precisely to that description. You should understand this. And above this royal palace, the great mass of water is upheld by four wind-wheels: the Winds of Sustaining, of Stabilizing, of Non-Falling, and of Firmness."

> "Monks, on the western side of Mount Sumeru, a thousand yojanas beneath the ocean waters, lies the palace of the Asura King Sarbala. This dwelling measures eighty thousand yojanas in length and width, with seven walls all around. In every detail, it is exactly like the palace of the Asura King Vemachitrin—everything there is the same as described previously. You should know this. Moreover, the water mass above this king's palace is sustained by four types of wind wheels, which hold it up, keep it steady, prevent it from falling, and keep it firm."

> "Monks, on the northern side of Mount Sumeru, stretching a thousand yojanas below the surface of the great sea, lies the palace of King Rahu, the Asura lord. This palace spans eighty thousand yojanas in length and width. It is surrounded by seven layers of city walls, with gates, towers, lookout posts, and defensive structures. There are gardens, lakes filled with blooming flowers—with all manner of trees, leaves, blossoms, fruits, and fragrant scents—along with countless birds singing in harmony, just as described before."

> "Monks, within that city there is a city where the Asura king Rahu dwells. Its name is Mavati. Its breadth and splendor are as described before. It has seven walls, seven rows of railings, seven rows of palm trees outside, and seven networks of bells surrounding it—all colorful and pleasing to the eye, made from the seven treasures like conch, coral, and agate. These walls, their height and breadth, are also as before. On all four sides of the walls there are gates. Each gate's height and breadth are likewise as before. Every gate has watchtowers, defense turrets, pavilions, gardens, ponds, and lotus pools. There are also various trees, with different leaves, different flowers, different fruits, and different fragrances. And there are many kinds of birds, each singing in harmony."

> Monks, in the city of Mavati, where the king resides, there is also a meeting place for Rahu, King of the Asuras. Each of the Asura kings there has seven heads. The place is as wide and long as described above. It is surrounded by seven tiers of railings, various bells and nets, and rows of palm trees on all sides, presenting a colorful and beautiful sight. It is also adorned with the seven treasures, such as conch shells and agate. On all four sides, there are gates, each gate having watchtowers, colorful and splendid, made of the seven treasures. The ground is covered with celestial conch shells, soft and smooth to the touch, like the Kācalindika cloth. In the center of this place stands a jeweled pillar, as tall and wide as described before. > "Monks, when King Rahu of the Asuras wanted to go to the Sala Grove and the Nandana Forest to bathe, play, and tour around, he would think of King Vemachitrin of the Asuras. And King Vemachitrin would think: 'King Rahu is thinking of me; he wants to go out and have fun together.' After thinking this, King Vemachitrin would then think of all the lesser Asura kings and all the lesser Asura beings. At that moment, those lesser Asura kings and beings would all think: 'King Vemachitrin is thinking of us; we must go to him.' Then, adorning themselves with various precious ornaments, they would mount their vehicles and proceed together to King Vemachitrin's palace. Upon arrival, they would stand in ranks outside the palace gate. Then King Vemachitrin, seeing that all the lesser Asura kings and beings had assembled, would adorn himself with ornaments and jewels. Mounting his own vehicle, accompanied by the lesser kings and Asura beings who surrounded him as an escort, he would go forth. They would proceed to King Rahu's residence and stop there. At that time, King Rahu would also think of the two Asura kings, Uddhadra and Supla. And those two kings would think: 'King Rahu is thinking of us now.' Knowing this, they would each think of their own lesser Asura kings and beings. Thinking thus, those lesser ones, too, would adorn themselves, gather together, and come to attend the two great kings, Uddhadra and Supla. After arriving, they too would adorn themselves with ornaments and jewels, mount their vehicles, and with their retinue surrounding them, they would proceed to King Rahu's residence. There, each would take his place at one side."

> At that time, the Asura King Rahula saw that King Vemacitrin and the other Asura kings had already gathered like clouds. He then called to mind his own lesser Asura kings and their followers. Knowing his intention, they each adorned themselves, mounted their vehicles, and came to stand respectfully before King Rahula. When King Rahula saw that everyone had assembled, he adorned his own body with various precious jeweled necklaces, mounted his vehicle, and surrounded by his retinue, he proceeded together with King Vemacitrin, King Uddhata, King Svarabhanu, along with all the lesser kings and Asura multitudes. As one great gathering, they journeyed to the Sala forest, the Samali forest, the Kovilara forest, and the Nandana forest. Having arrived, they lingered briefly before stopping and standing there.

> "Monks, in the Nanda Grove, three kinds of wind-wheels naturally arise. What are these three? They are: the Opening, the Cleansing, and the Scattering. Among these, 'Opening' refers to a wind-wheel that comes to open all the gates of the grove—this is called Opening. 'Cleansing' refers to a wind-wheel that comes to sweep the ground, making it completely clean—this is called Cleansing. 'Scattering' refers to a wind-wheel that comes to blow through the flowering trees, causing the blossoms to scatter—this is called Scattering. Monks, in the Nanda Grove, the finest and most beautiful flowers are scattered all over the ground, piling up to knee height. The fragrance of these flowers perfumes the entire garden, which is fully adorned and delightful in every way."

> At that time, Rāhula the Asura King, along with the Asura Kings Vemacitra, Udyāna, and Śaśvatpāla, as well as their various lesser kings, multitudes of followers, minor asuras, and attendants, all entered the Nandana Grove together. Once inside, they bathed, enjoyed themselves in sport and pleasure, and observed various sights—sometimes walking, sometimes standing, sometimes lying down, sometimes sitting—wandering freely as they pleased. Monks! Rāhula the Asura King also has five asuras who constantly attend and guard him against all harmful events, just as described before. The palace above the sea, in its length, width, and depth, is held up by four types of winds so that it does not fall, just as already explained.

> Chapter 7: The Four Heavenly Kings

> Monks, on the eastern midslope of Mount Sumeru, there is a mountain called Yugandhara. Its peak stands 42,000 yojanas above the ground. On its summit lies the city home of King Dhritarashtra, called Xianshang. This city is 600 yojanas square. It is surrounded by seven layers of walls, seven layers of railings, and seven layers of ringing nets. There are also seven rows of palm trees encircling it, all adorned with a colorful array of the seven treasures—gold, silver, crystal, beryl, red pearls, conch, and agate. On each of its four sides are gates. Every gate has watchtowers, fortifications, terraces, gardens, and ponds. There are groves of flowers and many kinds of exotic trees, each bearing various leaves, blooms, fruits, and fragrances. Their scents spread everywhere. Many kinds of birds sing together in harmony—sweet, elegant, and delightful to hear.

> "Monks, halfway down the southern side of Mount Sumeru, forty-two thousand yojanas from the base of the earth, above the peak of Mount Yugandhara, lies the city and dwelling place of King Virūḍhaka. This city is called 'Beautiful Appearance.' Its breadth, adornments, and splendor are exactly as described for the dwelling place of King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, down to the various birds whose harmonious calls are both poignant and delightful, bringing great joy to all who hear them."

> "Monks, on the western side of Mount Sumeru, halfway up its slopes, four thousand two hundred yojanas down from the summit, lies Mount Yugandhara. At its peak lies the city of King Virūpākṣa, named 'Good View.' Its size and splendor are entirely similar to the description of King Dhṛtarāṣṭra's dwelling. As before, various birds sing harmoniously, their voices both poignant and elegant, bringing great joy to all who hear them."

> "Monks, on the northern side of Mount Sumeru, halfway down from its summit, and 42,000 yojanas above the earth's surface, lies the summit of Mount Gandha. There, above the summit, is the abode of Vaisravana, a celestial king. He has three great fortified cities. What are these three? The first is called Vaisala, the second is called Gambhavati, and the third is called Atanata. Each city is six hundred yojanas in length and width, surrounded by seven walls, seven railings, and so on—in short, adorned with various birds who sing in harmony.

> "Monks, aside from the palaces of the Moon Deva and the seven great palaces of the Sun Deva, and the palaces of the other celestial officials and the Four Heavenly Kings—some of which span forty yojanas in diameter, others thirty, twenty, or even twelve yojanas, with the smallest still six yojanas across—each residence also features seven layers of walls and seven layers of railings. As described earlier, these are adorned with various birds singing in harmonious chorus."

> “Monks, between the palaces of Vaisravana and Gavampati, there lies a lake called Najini, which was born for King Vaisravana. It is forty yojanas in both length and width. Its water is harmonious, cool, light, and soft, with a sweet taste, pure fragrance, and no turbidity. The lake’s shores are lined with seven layers of brickwork and seven layers of precious boards, clearly arranged. There are seven tiers of railings, seven tiers of bell nets, and seven rows of palm trees surrounding it—a colorful and pleasing sight, all made from the seven treasures, including conch shell and agate. On each of the four sides, there are stairways, also adorned with the seven treasures. Within the lake, many utpala flowers, padma flowers, kumuda flowers, and pundarika flowers grow naturally. These flowers exhibit shapes, colors, and radiance of fire, as well as shapes, colors, and radiance of water. The size of each flower is as large as a cartwheel. Their light shines half a yojana, and their fragrance permeates a full yojana. There are also lotus roots, as thick as chariot axles. When cut, they flow with milk-white juice. When eaten, they taste as sweet as fine honey.

> Monks! Between the two star mansions of Svati and... a park was established for Vaisravana, the Heavenly King. Its name is Kapinjala. It measures forty yojanas in length and breadth, perfectly square. It is surrounded by seven walls, seven railings, and seven rows of palm trees, all in harmonious layers. The park is a delight to behold with its varied colors—in brief, it is made of the seven precious treasures.

> Monks, the heavenly realm of King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, with its city walls and thoroughfares, has two main passageways. Similarly, the splendid realm of King Virūḍhaka, the beautiful realm of King Virūpākṣa, and the realm of King Vaiśravaṇa—including both his citadel of Aṭṭāṭaka, the gardens and palaces of Viśālā and Kapiñjala—all have two pathways leading in and out, as do the dwellings of all the lesser celestial beings in the four heavenly kingdoms, and even the Lake Nādinī and the Gardens of Kapota. In each case, there are two passageways for travel.

> Monks, when the great king Vaiśravaṇa wishes to go to the Garden of Kapiñjala to amuse himself and bathe, he then thinks of the great king Dhṛtarāṣṭra. At that moment, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra also thinks: 'Vaiśravaṇa is thinking of me.' Knowing this, he turns his mind to the lesser kings and celestial beings under his command. Then all the kings and celestial beings of the eastern quarter think: 'King Dhṛtarāṣṭra is thinking of us.' Realizing this, they each adorn themselves, put on their jeweled necklaces, mount their vehicles, and go to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra. Upon arriving, they stand before him in a line. At that time, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra also adorns himself, wears his jeweled ornaments, mounts his vehicle, and surrounded by the lesser kings and celestial attendants, they all go together to King Vaiśravaṇa. Having arrived, they stand before him in a line.

> At that time, Vaisravana, the Heavenly King, further thought of the two great Heavenly Kings, Virudhaka and Virupaksha. Those two kings also thought: 'Vaisravana is mindful of us.' Knowing this, they each thought of the lesser heavenly kings under their command and the heavenly hosts. Then those lesser kings and the heavenly hosts likewise thought: 'Our great king is mindful of us; we should go quickly.' Knowing this, each adorned themselves with garlands and splendid ornaments, and together they proceeded to the two great kings, Virudhaka and Virupaksha. Then those two heavenly kings, knowing that all the lesser kings and the other heavenly hosts had gathered, also adorned themselves in fine ornaments and garlands, mounted their chariots, and surrounded by the assembly, went together to the great heavenly king Vaisravana. Upon arrival, they stopped respectfully before him.

> At that time, the Great Heavenly King Vaisravana saw that the two other heavenly kings and their celestial assemblies had already gathered. He then thought of the minor kings and celestial beings under his own command. Then the minor heavenly kings of the north and their celestial assemblies thought: 'The Great Heavenly King Vaisravana is now thinking of us.' Realizing this, each adorned themselves with various jeweled necklaces and ornaments, and together they went before the Great Heavenly King Vaisravana, standing there in silence.

> At that time, the great heavenly king Vaishravana, adorning himself with various precious garlands and ornaments, mounted different kinds of vehicles. Together with the four great heavenly kings — Dhritarashtra, Virulhaka, and Virupaksha — each leading their own retinues of heavenly beings, they surrounded him front and back. All together, they proceeded to the Garden of Kapiñjada. Upon arriving, they stopped temporarily before the garden gate. Monks, within the Garden of Kapiñjada, three types of wind-wheels naturally arose: the opening wind, the purifying wind, and the scattering wind. The opening wind opened the garden gate; the purifying wind cleaned the garden grounds; and the scattering wind blew through the garden's trees, causing flowers to float and drift. Monks, the various flowers scattered throughout the Garden of Kapiñjada accumulated ankle-deep, and their countless fragrances filled and perfumed the entire area.

> At that time, the four great heavenly kings—Vaiśravaṇa, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Virūḍhaka, and Virūpākṣa—together with various lesser kings and their entourages, assembled and entered the Kapilāyana Park. There, they bathed, played, and enjoyed many pleasures. After bathing in the park, they continued to amuse themselves for one, two, or even three months, enjoying pleasures as they pleased, wandering freely as their hearts desired.

> Monks! King Vaisravana has five yakshas who constantly follow and attend him, guarding him on all sides for his protection. What are these five? First is called Five-Zhang, second is called Open Field, third is called Golden Mountain, fourth is called Long Body, and fifth is called Needle Hair. Monks! Whenever Vaisravana, the Heavenly King, goes about or moves from place to place, he is always guarded by these five yaksha spirits.
