The *Brahmajāla Sutra* is an important Buddhist scripture translated during the Later Qin dynasty by the renowned translation master Kumārajīva, belonging to the Vinaya texts of Mahāyāna Buddhism. This sutra centers on the Buddha’s teachings on precepts for bodhisattvas, systematically expounding the forms and spirit of the Mahāyāna bodhisattva precepts, with particular emphasis on the guidelines for upholding the ten major precepts and the forty-eight minor precepts. As one of the fundamental scriptures of the bodhisattva precepts in Chinese Buddhism, the *Brahmajāla Sutra* established the theoretical foundation for the bodhisattva precepts in Chinese Buddhism and exerted a profound influence on the vinaya practices of later schools such as Chan and Tiantai. Its emphasized concept of the "dharma gate of the mind-ground" reflects the core spirit of Mahāyāna Buddhism, which takes the mind as the essence of precepts, holding an irreplaceable and significant position in the history of Chinese Buddhism.

梵網經序

Brahma's Net Sutra Preface

The essence of the Dharma is profound and unchanging, its truth beyond alteration. Thus, it reaches the depths of the mysterious source, and all practices arise from the dwelling of deep faith. For this reason, the Indian master Kumārajīva held this chapter as foremost in his heart. This scripture originally consisted of 112 volumes and 61 chapters.

Kumārajīva was well-versed in the great teachings from a young age, harmonizing diverse studies in Kapiśa. In the third year of the Hongshi era, the pure wind of Dharma spread eastward. The ruler of Qin, Yao Xing, whose virtue aligned with ancient kings and whose mind embraced the great Dharma, gathered three thousand scholars in the Thatched Hall to examine and establish over fifty texts of both the Greater and Lesser Vehicles with Kumārajīva. Only the *Brahmajāla Sūtra* was recited last.

At that time, Dao Rong, Hui Ying, and three hundred others simultaneously received the ten bodhisattva precepts. This brought benefit not only for that age but became a ferry across countless kalpas! Therefore, in a separate text with Dao Rong, this chapter on the mind-ground was presented. Over three hundred people then recited this chapter. Thus, eighty-one copies of this chapter were written to be transmitted and upheld by later generations.

This is entrusted to future students and noble seekers of the Way: may we together witness the assembly under the Dragon-flower Tree across ages to come, never ceasing.
