Chapter 4: Praise
At that time, the Buddha spoke to the Earth Deity, Firm Ground: "Good goddess! In the past, there was a king named Golden Dragon Lord, who always praised the Buddhas of the past, future, and present with verses of homage:
諸佛清淨, 微妙寂滅, 色中上色, 金光照耀;
於諸聲中, 佛聲最上, 猶如大梵, 深遠雷音;
其髮紺黑, 光螺焰起, 蜂翠孔雀, 色不得喻;
其齒鮮白, 猶如珂雪, 顯發金顏, 分齊分明;
其目脩廣, 清淨無垢, 如青蓮華, 映水開敷;
舌相廣長, 形色紅輝, 光明照耀, 如華初生;
眉間毫相, 白如珂月, 右旋潤澤, 如淨琉璃;
眉細脩揚, 形如月初, 其色黑耀, 過於蜂王;
鼻高圓直, 如鑄金鋌, 微妙柔軟, 當于面門;
如來勝相, 次第最上, 得味真正, 無與等者;
悉滅一切, 無量惡趣。 身色微妙, 如融金聚;
面貌清淨, 如月盛滿; 佛身明耀, 如日初出;
聚集功德, 莊嚴佛身, 臂𦟛纖圓, 如象王鼻;
我功德海, 願悉成就; 智慧大海, 清淨具足;
如昔諸佛, 行菩提者。 三世諸佛, 淨妙國土;
"Now I pay homage with deep respect, offering praise and adoration to all Buddhas of the past, present, and future throughout the ten directions. The Buddhas are pure, wondrously serene, and still. Among all forms, theirs are the most radiant, shining with golden light. Among all sounds, the Buddha's voice is supreme, like the deep, resonant thunder of the great Brahma. Their hair is dark blue-black, with glowing curls that rise like flames—no color of bees, peacocks, or emeralds can compare. Their teeth are pure white, like snow-white conch shells, beautifully framing their golden faces with perfect alignment. Their eyes are long and wide, clear and flawless, like blue lotuses blooming and reflecting on water. Their tongues are broad and long, glowing red and radiant, like newly opened flowers. The white hair between their brows shines like a moon-white conch, curling to the right with a luster like pure crystal. Their eyebrows are fine and elongated, shaped like the crescent moon, their dark luster surpassing even the king of bees. Their noses are high, round, and straight, like cast gold bars—subtle, soft, and perfectly placed upon their faces. The Tathāgata's supreme features, each one most excellent in turn, embody true flavor beyond all comparison. Every single pore grows a single curling hair, soft, fine, and dark blue, like the neck of a peacock.
From the moment of birth, their bodies emit great light, illuminating countless lands throughout the ten directions. They extinguish all suffering in the three realms, bringing joy to all beings. Beings in hells, among animals, hungry ghosts, humans, and gods all find peace and freedom from harm, as all countless unfortunate destinies are entirely eliminated. Their bodily form is subtle and wondrous, like molten gold gathered together. Their faces are clear and pure, like the full moon at its peak. The Buddha's body shines brilliantly, like the sun just rising. Their movements and bearing are majestic like a lion. Their long arms hang down past their knees, swaying like branches of the sala tree in the wind. A halo of light one fathom wide shines boundlessly, like a gathering of hundreds and thousands of suns and moons. The Buddha's body is pure and wondrous, free of all defilement, its radiance illuminating all Buddha-lands. The Buddha's light is towering and majestic, its blazing brilliance eclipsing countless suns and moons. The Buddha-sun, the lamp and torch, illuminates countless realms, enabling all beings to see the Buddha by following this light.
Through countless good deeds practiced over time, accumulated merit adorns the Buddha's body. Their arms are round and full, like the trunk of a great elephant king. Their hands and feet are pure and soft, inspiring love and respect without end. Buddhas of the past and future are as numerous as specks of dust, and so are the Buddhas of the present. To all such Tathāgatas, I now bow in full reverence. With body, speech, and mind purified—my actions, words, and thoughts all the same—I offer fragrant flowers in devotion. Even praising their merits with hundreds of virtuous verses and songs, using a hundred tongues for a thousand eons, I could never exhaust their praises. The Tathāgata's present-world virtues are profound, firm, and supremely subtle—truly the highest. Even with a thousand tongues, one could not fully praise a single Buddha's merits, not even a fraction. How much less could one praise the merits of all Buddhas? If the earth and sky were turned into a great ocean, filled with water up to the highest heavens, one could know the number of its drops with a single hair, but no one can fathom even one virtue of the Buddha.
Now, through my bows and praises of all Buddhas, my deeds of body, speech, and mind are all purified. All the boundless good karma I have cultivated, I dedicate together with all beings to the realization of the supreme path."
After praising the Buddha in this way, this king of men made further boundless vows, saying:
"In my future lives, throughout countless, measureless eons, may I always see in dreams the wondrous golden drum and hear the profound sound of repentance. The pure and radiant face I now praise—may I attain the same in lives to come. The Buddhas' merits are inconceivable, and meeting them is extremely rare across hundreds of thousands of eons. May I, in countless future lives, dream of this at night and teach it truthfully by day. I shall fully cultivate the six perfections, rescuing beings and carrying them across the sea of suffering, and then my body shall attain the supreme path. May my world be without equal. Through the offering of the golden drum and the causes of praising the Buddha, by this karmic reward, may I in future lives encounter Shakyamuni Buddha and receive his prophecy of enlightenment. May my two sons, Golden Dragon and Golden Light, always be reborn in my family and receive the prophecy together with me. For all beings with no one to protect them, tormented by suffering and without refuge, may I in the future be their great protector and place of refuge, extinguishing all their suffering completely and granting them all goodness and happiness. In my future lives, walking the bodhisattva path across countless eons, until the very end of all existence, through this cause of repentance with the golden light, may my sea of evil deeds, my sea of karmic obstacles, and my vast sea of afflictions all dry up completely. May my sea of merit be fully accomplished. May my great sea of wisdom be pure and complete. May countless virtues support the path of enlightenment, like a great ocean filled with treasures. Through the power of this repentance with the golden light, may the virtues of enlightenment shine with unobstructed brilliance, may the light of wisdom be free of defilement, penetrating with perfect clarity. In future lives, may my body's light shine universally, with majestic power and blazing radiance, supreme and extraordinary throughout the three realms. May my store of virtuous power never diminish, and may I ferry beings across the sea of suffering, settling them within the great ocean of merit. Through many eons to come, may I walk the bodhisattva path, just as the Buddhas of the past have walked it. The pure and wondrous Buddha-lands of the three times, the supreme Buddhas with their immeasurable merits—may I in future lives attain such extraordinary pure lands of merit, just like the World-Honored Buddhas."
Know this, Xianxiang: the king at that time, the venerable Golden Dragon, was you yourself. The two sons at that time, Golden Dragon and Golden Light, are now your two sons, Yinchang and the others."
