The Sutra of the Merits and Original Vows of the Seven Medicine Buddhas of Lapis Lazuli Radiance, Volume One
Translated by the Tang Dynasty Tripitaka Master Yijing at the Foguang Inner Temple
This is what I heard:
Once, the Bhagavān, while traveling and teaching in various lands, arrived at the city of Vaiśālī. He was seated beneath the Music Tree, accompanied by a great assembly of eight thousand bhikṣus, and thirty-six thousand great bodhisattvas. Their names were: Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, Maitreya Bodhisattva, Subhūti Bodhisattva, Mahāmati Bodhisattva, Prabhāmati Bodhisattva, Giriśikharadhara Bodhisattva, Vādaśikharadhara Bodhisattva, Merudhvajadhara Bodhisattva, Anuttaravyūha Bodhisattva, Gambhīrasvararāja Bodhisattva, Nityacintā Bodhisattva, Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva, and others like them, who served as the foremost leaders. Also present were kings, ministers, brahmins, householders, and the eight kinds of celestial beings, dragons, and spirits, along with humans, non-humans, and an immeasurable multitude. They all gathered respectfully around him to listen to the Dharma.
He taught them with words that were excellent in the beginning, excellent in the middle, and excellent in the end. The meaning was profound and skillful, utterly pure, complete, flawless, and radiant—the very mark of the holy life. He instructed, inspired, and gladdened them, enabling them all to perfect the subtle practices and vows, and to advance toward great enlightenment.
At that time, the Dharma Prince Bodhisattva Manjushri, empowered by the Buddha's majestic spiritual force, rose from his seat. He bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, and with palms joined respectfully, addressed the Buddha, saying:
"World-Honored One! Presently, an immeasurable assembly of heavenly beings and humans has gathered like clouds, all for the purpose of hearing the Dharma. Only you, Buddha, World-Honored One, from the initial arising of your resolve until now, throughout countless dust-grain kalpas and the lands of all Buddhas, have omniscient vision. We beseech you, out of compassion, to expound for us and for sentient beings in the future age of the semblance Dharma: the names of the Buddhas, their original vows and merits, the adornments of their pure lands, and the distinctions in their skillful means. May those who hear this have their karmic obstacles eradicated and attain non-retrogression, even up to the attainment of Enlightenment."
At that time, the World-Honored One praised the Bodhisattva Manjushri, saying: "Excellent, excellent, Manjushri! Out of great compassion, you have taken pity on sentient beings burdened by countless karmic obstacles—afflicted by various illnesses, sorrows, and sufferings—and, wishing them to attain peace and happiness, you have urged me to speak of the names, original vows, merits, and the majestic adornments of the buddhas’ pure lands. This question arises through the power of the Tathagata’s majestic spiritual force. Now listen attentively and reflect deeply, for I shall explain it to you."
Manjushri said: "Please, tell us. We are eager to listen."
The Buddha addressed Manjushri, saying, "To the east of here, beyond four Ganges rivers' worth of sand-grain Buddha-lands, there exists a world called 'Unsurpassed.' In that world dwells the Buddha named 'King of Auspicious Renown,' the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, endowed with wisdom and conduct, the Well-Gone One, the Knower of the World, the Unsurpassed Being, the Tamer of Men, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the World-Honored One. He is surrounded by an immeasurable multitude of billions of Bodhisattvas who do not regress, abiding upon a lion throne adorned with the seven precious substances, supreme and wondrous. He is presently teaching the Dharma.
Manjushri, that Buddha-land is pure and beautifully adorned. Its length and breadth are equal, spanning hundreds of thousands of yojanas. Its ground is made of Jambu River gold, level, smooth, and soft, with a fragrance like heavenly incense. There are no evil realms, nor even the name 'woman.' There is no rubble, sand, stones, or thorns. Precious trees stand in rows, their flowers and fruits abundant. There are many bathing pools, all inlaid and decorated with gold, silver, pearls, and various jewels.
Manjushri, the Bodhisattvas of that land are all born transformed upon lotuses of the seven precious substances. Therefore, all faithful and virtuous men and women should aspire to be reborn in that Buddha-land."
Manjushri! That Buddha, the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, from the very moment he first resolved to follow the Bodhisattva path, made eight great vows. What are these eight?
**The First Great Vow:** When I attain supreme enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings whose bodies are afflicted and tormented by all manner of sickness and suffering—such as fevers, malaria, poisonings, evil spells, or attacks by corpse-rising ghosts—and if they can single-mindedly call upon my name, then by this power, all their sickness and suffering will be entirely eradicated, and they will ultimately attain supreme enlightenment.
"Second Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, may any being who is blind, deaf, mute, afflicted with leprosy, madness, or tormented by various illnesses—if they sincerely call upon my name—through this power, be made whole in all their faculties, their illnesses eradicated, all the way to Enlightenment."
"Third Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings entangled and driven by greed, hatred, and ignorance, committing heinous crimes and all manner of evil deeds, slandering the true Dharma, and failing to cultivate virtuous acts—they are destined to fall into hell and suffer all manner of agonies. Yet, if they can sincerely call upon my name, through this power, their heinous crimes and all karmic obstacles will be completely eradicated. No being will fall into the evil realms; they will constantly enjoy the supreme peace and happiness of humans and gods, all the way to Enlightenment."
"The Fourth Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings who lack clothing, food, adornments, bedding, wealth, treasures, fragrant flowers, or music, and if they can sincerely recite my name, through this power, all their material needs will be fully met, even until they attain Enlightenment."
"Fifth Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings who are bound by chains, shackled, or whipped, suffering all manner of torment—if they can wholeheartedly call upon my name, then by the power of this vow, all their suffering shall be released, leading them all the way to Enlightenment."
The Sixth Great Vow: May I, upon attaining Enlightenment in a future life, bring liberation to all beings who find themselves in perilous places, tormented by fierce beasts—bears, lions, tigers, leopards, wolves, vipers, and scorpions—seeking to take their lives. When they cry out in terror, suffering immense pain, if they can wholeheartedly call upon my name, then by the power of this vow, all their fear will be dispelled. These vicious creatures will awaken to compassion, and those in distress will find lasting peace and safety, all the way to the attainment of Enlightenment.
"Seventh Great Vow: May I, upon attaining Enlightenment in a future life, enable all beings who suffer from disputes, arguments, and the resulting distress—if they wholeheartedly call upon my name—to be freed from contention and discord through this power, so they may face each other with compassion, all the way to Enlightenment."
"The Eighth Great Vow: May I, upon attaining Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings who venture upon rivers and seas, encounter fierce gales that batter their ships, with no islands or shores to take refuge in, and are filled with extreme anxiety and terror—if they can wholeheartedly call upon my name, then through the power of this vow, may they all reach a place of safety according to their wishes, experience all manner of joy and ease, and continue thus until they attain Enlightenment."
"Manjushri! These are the eight subtle and profound great vows that Buddha, the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, made while practicing the Bodhisattva path. Moreover, from the very beginning of his resolve, that World-Honored One has constantly used the power of meditation to help all beings, make offerings to all Buddhas, purify Buddha lands, and perfectly fulfill the assembly of Bodhisattva companions. The merit and virtue of this are inconceivable; even if all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas spent many eons trying to describe it, they could not exhaust it—only a Tathagata or a Bodhisattva who is one lifetime away from Buddhahood could do so.
Manjushri! If any man or woman with pure faith, whether a king, minister, elder, or householder, sincerely seeks merit and virtue, wishes to cut off all afflictions, recites that Buddha’s name, reads this sutra, and with utmost sincerity respects, reveres, and makes offerings to that Tathagata, then all their evil karma, obstacles, and sicknesses will be completely eradicated. All their wishes and aspirations will be fulfilled, they will attain non-retrogression, and ultimately reach enlightenment."
Furthermore, Manjushri, to the east of this world, beyond five Ganges rivers' worth of sand-grain buddha-lands, there exists a world called Wondrous Jewel. Its buddha is named Jewel Moon, Wisdom-Severe, Light-Sound, Sovereign King Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One. He is surrounded by immeasurable hundreds of millions of bodhisattvas and is presently teaching the Dharma, all expounding the profound and subtle meaning of the Great Vehicle.
Manjushri, when that Buddha Tathagata first set his mind on Enlightenment and began practicing the Bodhisattva Path, he made eight great vows. What are these eight?
**First Great Vow:** When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings whose minds are disturbed by the work of farming or commerce, who abandon the practice of the supreme good Dharma of Enlightenment and cannot escape the cycle of birth and death, each one enduring boundless suffering—if they can single-mindedly recite my name, then by this power, their clothing, food, necessities of life, gold, silver, and precious jewels will be amply provided as they wish. All their roots of goodness will increase, they will not forsake the mind set on Enlightenment, the sufferings of all evil destinies will be relieved for them, all the way to attaining Enlightenment.
"The Second Great Vow: May I, when I attain Enlightenment in a future life, for all beings throughout the ten directions—if they are tormented by cold or heat, hunger or thirst, suffering immense agony—if they can wholeheartedly call upon my name, then through this power, their past misdeeds and karmic obstacles will all be eradicated. They will be freed from all sufferings and torments, and enjoy the bliss of humans and heavenly beings, all the way until they achieve Enlightenment."
"My third great vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, throughout the worlds in the ten directions, if there are women whose minds are constantly clouded by lustful desires and attachments, who endure the continuous burden of pregnancy—a state deeply distressing and wearisome—and who, at the time of childbirth, undergo immense suffering and anguish; if my name merely passes through their ears, or if they recite it, then by this power, all their sufferings shall be dispelled. After leaving this body, they shall always be reborn as men, until they attain Enlightenment."
"Fourth Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings who, along with their parents, siblings, spouse, family, or close friends, travel through dangerous places and are attacked by bandits, suffering all kinds of torment—if they merely hear my name or call upon it, through this power, may they be freed from all perils, all the way to Enlightenment."
The Fifth Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings who, while walking in the dark of night, go about their tasks and are harassed and tormented by evil spirits, falling into deep distress and suffering—should they but briefly hear my name, or even recite it, through this power they will pass from darkness into light. The evil spirits will give rise to a mind of compassion, and this will continue until they too reach Enlightenment.
"Sixth Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings who engage in base and evil deeds, do not believe in the Three Jewels, have little wisdom, and do not cultivate wholesome practices—neglecting the faculties, powers, factors of enlightenment, the path, mindfulness, concentration, and retention—if they can wholeheartedly invoke my name, then through this power, their wisdom will gradually increase. They will fully cultivate the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, deeply believe in the Three Jewels, and continue until they attain Enlightenment."
"Seventh Great Vow: May I, when I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings whose minds delight in inferior paths, who practice and abide in the ways of the two vehicles, turning away from the supreme and wonderful Enlightenment—if they can wholeheartedly invoke my name, may they abandon the views of the two vehicles and attain irreversible progress toward supreme Enlightenment, all the way to full Awakening."
The Eighth Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings who, seeing the kalpa about to end and the fires about to arise, are filled with great dread and terror, suffering and weeping in anguish—and who, due to the power of evil karma from their past lives, endure all these sufferings with no refuge to turn to—if they can wholeheartedly recite my name, then all their dread and suffering will vanish. They will experience a bliss of cool tranquility, and when their lives end, they will be reborn by lotus transformation in my Buddha-land. There they will constantly cultivate wholesome dharmas until they attain Enlightenment.
Manjushri, these are the eight subtle and profound great vows made by that Buddha, the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, when he was practicing the Bodhisattva path. Moreover, the Buddha-land where that Tathagata dwells is vast, majestic, and pure, with ground as level as the palm of a hand. Celestial fragrant trees stand in orderly rows, divine flowers cover the earth everywhere, heavenly music constantly plays, exquisite celestial bells and chimes hang all around, and lion thrones are adorned with celestial jewels. There are wondrous bathing pools decorated with celestial gemstones. The ground is soft, without any tiles or gravel. There are no women there, nor any afflictions. All are irreversible Bodhisattvas, born from lotus flowers. When a thought arises, food, drink, clothing, and all necessities appear according to their wish. Therefore, it is called the World of Wondrous Jewels.
Manjushri! If there are men and women of pure faith—kings, princes, ministers, high officials, palace ladies, or attendants—who, during the six periods of day and night, earnestly and sincerely revere and make offerings to that Buddha, the World-Honored One, and recite his name, and who also create images of him, offering fragrant flowers, music, incense, powdered incense, and anointing incense as a pure and solemn tribute; who, for seven days, uphold the eight precepts of abstinence and cultivate a mind of compassion toward all beings, aspiring to be reborn in that land—then that Buddha, the World-Honored One, and all the bodhisattvas will protect and remember such people. All their karmic offenses will be completely eradicated, and they will attain irreversible progress toward supreme enlightenment. Their greed, anger, and delusion will gradually diminish; they will be free from illness and suffering, their lifespan will increase, and whatever they seek will be fulfilled. Those who quarrel or bear enmity will instead give rise to joy. After leaving this body, they will be reborn in that pure land, emerging from lotus flowers. At the moment of birth, mindfulness, concentration, and retention of the teachings will all be fully clear to them. Manjushri! You should understand this: the name of that Buddha possesses immeasurable merit and virtue. Those who hear it will have all their wishes fulfilled.
Furthermore, Manjushri, to the east of here, beyond six Ganges rivers of sand-like Buddha lands, there exists a world called Perfect Fragrance Accumulation. There resides the Buddha named Golden-Colored Treasure Light, Wondrous Practice Accomplished Tathagata, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly Enlightened One. He is surrounded by countless hundreds of millions of Bodhisattvas and is presently teaching the Dharma.
Manjushri! When that Buddha Tathagata first resolved to practice the Bodhisattva Path, he made four great vows. What are these four?
"First Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings who commit various acts of slaughter and harm, taking the lives of others, and because of these evil deeds suffer the torments of hell, or are reborn as humans with short lives and many illnesses, or meet death by water, fire, blade, or poison—if they hear my name and sincerely recite it, then through this power, all their evil deeds will be completely eradicated. They will be free from illness, enjoy long life, avoid untimely death, and ultimately attain Enlightenment."
"Second Great Vow: May I, upon attaining Enlightenment in a future life, be such that if there are beings who commit various evil deeds, steal the wealth and possessions of others, and are thus destined to fall into the miserable realms, or even if they are reborn as humans, they are born into impoverished families, lacking clothing and food, constantly enduring all kinds of suffering—if they hear my name and sincerely recite it, then through the power of this vow, all their evil karma will be completely eradicated. They will lack nothing in clothing and food, and they will ultimately attain Enlightenment."
The Third Great Vow: May I, upon attaining Enlightenment in a future life, enable all beings who harbor mutual contempt and enmity toward one another—should they hear my name and sincerely recite it—to be empowered thereby to cultivate compassion for each other, as tender as that of parents for their children, all the way to the attainment of Enlightenment.
Fourth Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings entangled by greed, hatred, and delusion—whether among the sevenfold assembly of monks, nuns, or lay followers—who violate the precepts established by the Tathāgata, commit evil deeds, and are thus destined to fall into hell and suffer its torments; if they hear my name, sincerely recite it, then through this power, all their evil deeds will be completely eradicated, their afflictions severed. They will reverently uphold the precepts, skillfully guarding their body, speech, and mind, never regressing, all the way to Enlightenment.
"Manjushri! These are the four subtle and profound great vows that Buddha, the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, made when he was practicing the Bodhisattva path.
Manjushri! Moreover, the Buddha-land where that Tathagata resides is vast, magnificent, and pure. The ground is as level as the palm of a hand, all made of precious substances. A constant fragrance, like fine sandalwood, fills the air, and fragrant trees stand in rows. Celestial jewels, pearl necklaces, mani gems, and other treasures hang everywhere. There are many bathing pools, adorned with heavenly treasures, filled with fragrant water, complete with all virtues, and exquisite silken banners are hung all around. The streets and avenues are beautifully adorned in every direction. All beings there are free from afflictions, sorrows, and suffering. There are no women; most are Bodhisattvas abiding on the stages of realization. Sublime music plays spontaneously without being struck, proclaiming the subtle and profound Dharma of the Great Vehicle. Any being who hears this sound will attain irreversible, unsurpassed enlightenment."
"Manjushri! That Buddha, the Tathagata, through the power of his past vows and skillful means, perfected his Buddha-land, complete and adorned. Seated upon the Bodhi-throne, he thought thus: 'In future ages, if there are beings entangled by greed, anger, and delusion, oppressed by many illnesses, harmed by enemies, or meeting untimely death; or if, due to evil karma, they fall into hell and endure intense suffering—'
That Buddha, seeing these afflicted beings, spoke this divine mantra to remove their karmic obstacles, so that by receiving and upholding it, they may gain great benefit in this present life, be far removed from all sufferings, and abide in Bodhi." Then he spoke the mantra:
"Tadyatha: Siddhe Siddhe Susiddhe Modzani Motsani Mudite Vimudite Amale Vimale Mangale Hiranayagarbhe Haratana Garbhe Sarva-artha-sadhani Pramartha-sadhani Mantasi Maha-mantasi Abhute Abhisambhute Vidyavati Subhani Varahana Guhyaka Varahana Chudite Sarva-arthanubhute Apraptate Savatara Apraptati Chetu-sat Sapta-buddha-koti-bhavate Namah Sarva Tathagatanam Svaha."
At that time, after the World-Honored One had spoken this great and powerful mantra, all the great bodhisattvas, the Four Heavenly Kings, Indra, Brahma, and others present praised him, saying: "Excellent, excellent! O Compassionate World-Honored One! You have spoken this great and powerful divine mantra of the past Tathagatas, to bring benefit to countless beings, to dry up the ocean of afflictions, to lead them to the shore of Nirvana, to remove all illnesses, and to fulfill all their aspirations."
The Buddha addressed the assembly, saying: "If any man or woman of pure faith—be they a king, a prince, a minister, a high official, a palace attendant, or a court lady—aspires to merit and virtue, and with reverent faith turns to this divine mantra, whether they read it, recite it, or explain its meaning to others, and with great compassion toward all sentient beings, six times a day make offerings of incense, flowers, lamps, and candles with sincere devotion, bathe in purity, uphold the eight precepts, and recite with utmost sincerity, then all their heaviest and boundless karmic obstacles will be completely eradicated. In this very life, they will be free from all afflictions. When their life approaches its end, they will be protected and remembered by the Buddhas, and they will be reborn by lotus transformation in that Buddha's pure land."
Furthermore, Manjushri! To the east of here, beyond seven Ganges rivers' worth of sand-grain Buddha lands, there exists a world called 'Free from Sorrow.' In that world dwells the Buddha named 'Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened, Most Auspicious and Supreme Free from Sorrow,' who is presently teaching the Dharma to the assembly. The Buddha land where that Tathagata resides is vast, majestic, and pure. Its ground is level as the palm of a hand, entirely formed of precious substances, fine, smooth, and soft, constantly filled with fragrant scents. There are no sounds of sorrow or suffering, all afflictions are absent, and there are neither evil realms nor even the name 'woman.' Everywhere there are bathing pools lined with gold, brimming with fragrant waters. Precious trees stand in rows, their flowers and fruits lush and abundant. Sublime music resounds spontaneously, without being played—just like the meritorious adornments of the Land of Immeasurable Life in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Manjushri! When that Buddha, the World-Honored One, was practicing the Bodhisattva path, he made four great vows. What are these four?
First Great Vow: May I, upon attaining Enlightenment in a future life, bring relief to all beings constantly bound by sorrow and suffering. Should any hear my name and sincerely recite it, through this power, may all their grief, sorrow, and afflictions be dispelled, granting them long life, peace, and security, leading them all the way to Enlightenment.
"The Second Great Vow: May I, in a future life when I attain Enlightenment, if there are beings who commit all kinds of evil deeds, are born in the pitch-black places of the Uninterrupted Hell, and suffer various torments in the great hells—because in their previous lives they heard my name, at that time, I will emit light from my body, illuminating those who suffer. By this power, when they see the light, all their karmic obstacles will be completely eradicated. They will be liberated from all sufferings, reborn among humans or gods, and enjoy happiness as they wish, all the way until they attain Enlightenment."
"Third Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings who commit all kinds of evil deeds—killing, stealing, sexual misconduct—and in their present existence suffer the pain of blades and clubs, who are destined to fall into evil realms, or who, even if they gain a human body, are short-lived and sickly, born into poor and lowly families, lacking clothes and food, constantly enduring the sufferings of cold and heat, hunger and thirst, their bodies without radiance or beauty, and whose families and companions are all unworthy and unkind—if they hear my name and sincerely recite it, through the power of this vow, all that they seek—food, clothing—will be fully provided, like the gods, their bodies radiant and lovely, they will gain good families and companions, all the way to Enlightenment."
Fourth Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings constantly tormented by yakshas and other malevolent spirits, who steal their vital energy and cause them to suffer all kinds of misery—should they hear my name and sincerely recite it, then by the power of this vow, all those yakshas and others will completely withdraw. They will each give rise to a compassionate heart, freeing beings from their suffering, all the way until they attain Enlightenment.
Manjushri! These are the four subtle and profound great vows made by that Buddha, the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One. If there are beings who hear that Buddha's name, and for the six periods of day and night recite his name, pay homage with reverence, and make offerings with sincere hearts, and who give rise to a mind of compassion toward all beings, then their karmic obstacles will be extinguished, they will be freed from sorrow and suffering, they will enjoy freedom from illness and long life, they will attain the wisdom of past lives, and in the Buddha-lands they will be born from lotus flowers, always guarded and protected by the heavenly beings. Manjushri! Reciting that Buddha's name can give rise to such immeasurable blessings and merits, and the adornments of that Buddha-land, its sublime virtues and supreme merits, are beyond the comprehension of Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas—only the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One can fully know them.
"Furthermore, Manjushri! To the east from here, beyond eight Ganges rivers' worth of sand-grain Buddha lands, there is a world called the Banner of Dharma. The Buddha there is named the Tathagata Dharma-Ocean Thunder-Voice, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is presently teaching the Dharma. Manjushri! In that Buddha World-Honored One's land, it is pure and without defilement. The ground is level and even, made of crystal, constantly radiant, with fragrant aromas wafting pleasantly. The city walls are formed of lapis lazuli, with eight main avenues paved with gold and silver. The towers, pavilions, halls, and palaces—their soaring eaves, windows, and doors, along with the balustrades and ornamental railings—are all fashioned from various precious jewels. Celestial fragrant treasure trees stand in rows everywhere, and from their branches hang heavenly silks, with precious bells dangling all around. When a gentle breeze stirs, they emit wondrous sounds that eloquently proclaim impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. Beings who hear these sounds abandon their entanglements of desire, gradually eliminate their habitual tendencies, and realize profound meditative concentration. Exquisite celestial flowers drift down in profusion. On all four sides, there are eight bathing pools, their bottoms strewn with golden sand, filled to overflowing with fragrant water. Manjushri! In that Buddha land, there are no evil destinies, nor are there women. Beings are born transformed from lotus flowers, free from afflictions."
When that Buddha was practicing the Bodhisattva path, he made four great vows. What were these four?
First Great Vow: In the life when I attain Enlightenment, if there are beings born into families holding wrong views, who lack pure faith in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha, and who have turned away from the supreme aspiration for Enlightenment—should they hear my name and sincerely recite it, then through this power, their ignorance and distorted wisdom will day and night diminish and vanish. They will give rise to deep, correct faith in the Three Jewels, and this faith will never regress or falter, all the way until they attain Enlightenment.
Second Great Vow: May I, upon attaining Enlightenment in a future life, bring liberation to all beings born in remote lands, who keep company with harmful influences, commit many misdeeds, neglect virtuous practices, and have never even heard the names of the Three Jewels. When their lives end, they fall into the three lower realms. Yet if these beings hear my name even briefly, through this power, their karmic obstacles will be dispelled. They will meet wise and virtuous friends, avoid falling into the lower realms, and progress all the way to Enlightenment.
The Third Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings who lack the necessities of life—clothing, food, bedding, and medicine—and because of this condition, they fall into great distress and suffering, and in their search for these things, commit many evil deeds; if they hear my name and sincerely recite it, then through the power of this vow, whatever they lack will be provided according to their needs, all the way until they attain Enlightenment.
"The Fourth Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings who, due to past negative karma, engage in conflict and harm, using bows, arrows, knives, and clubs to injure one another—if they hear my name and sincerely recite it, through this power, they will each give rise to a mind of compassion, cease harming one another, and not even conceive of ill will, much less seek to take another's life. They will constantly practice generosity and joy, all the way to Enlightenment."
Manjushri! These are the four subtle and profound great vows that Buddha, the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, made while practicing the Bodhisattva path. If any man or woman with pure faith hears that Buddha's name, sincerely pays homage, diligently makes offerings, upholds and recites it, their karmic obstacles will be eliminated. They will attain the unwavering mind of Bodhi, gain the wisdom of past lives, and wherever they are reborn, they will always see the Buddha. They will be free from illness and enjoy long life. After death, they will be reborn in that Buddha's land, where clothing, food, and all necessities of life will appear as they wish, without any lack. Manjushri! That Buddha, the World-Honored One, possesses such immeasurable merits. Therefore, beings should always remember him and never forget.
"Furthermore, Manjushri, to the east of here, beyond nine Ganges rivers' worth of sand-grain Buddha lands, there exists a world called 'Well-Abiding Treasure Ocean.' In that world, there is a Buddha named 'Dharma Ocean Victorious Wisdom Playful Spiritual Prowess Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One,' who is presently teaching the Dharma."
Manjushri, when that Buddha was practicing the Bodhisattva path, he made four great vows. What are these four?
**The First Great Vow:** In a future age, when I attain Enlightenment, if there are beings who have committed many evil deeds—such as those who farm and cultivate the land, harming many lives; or those who engage in trade and cheat others; or those who take up arms in war, constantly killing—if they hear my name and recite it with utmost sincerity, then through the power of this vow, they shall obtain the necessities of life without having to strive for them, their wishes shall be fulfilled, and they shall constantly cultivate all manner of good deeds, all the way to Enlightenment.
Second Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings who commit the ten evil deeds—such as killing—and because of these actions are destined to fall into hell, but upon hearing my name, sincerely recite it with all their heart, they will achieve all ten virtuous paths. They will not fall into evil realms, all the way until they attain Enlightenment.
"Third Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if there are beings who are not free, bound to others, or imprisoned, shackled, chained, tortured with whips and clubs, even facing execution—if they hear my name and sincerely recite it, through this power, all their hardships and calamities will be liberated, even unto Enlightenment."
"Fourth Great Vow: May I, upon attaining Enlightenment in a future life, encounter beings who have committed numerous evil deeds, who do not believe in the Three Jewels, who follow false views, turn away from the true Dharma, delight in misguided companions, slander the Buddhist scriptures, claiming they are not the teachings of the sages, and instead reverently uphold and propagate the texts of heretical paths, leading themselves and others into confusion. Such beings are destined to fall into hell with no hope of escape, or if reborn as humans, they will be born into the eight difficult circumstances, far removed from the true path, blind and lacking the eye of wisdom. If these beings hear my name and sincerely recite it, by the power of this vow, at the moment of death, right mindfulness will arise before them, freeing them from all difficulties. They will always be reborn in a central land, experiencing sublime joy, and ultimately attain Enlightenment."
Manjushri! These are the four subtle and profound great vows made by that Buddha, the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, when he was practicing the Bodhisattva path. Manjushri! The merits and adornments of that Buddha's land are no different from those of the world of the Exquisite Jewel Tathagata.
Furthermore, Manjushri! To the east of here, beyond ten Ganges rivers' worth of Buddha lands, there exists a world called Pure Lapis Lazuli. In that world, there is a Buddha named Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Radiance Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One.
Manjushri! That Buddha, the World-Honored One, from the very beginning of his aspiration, when he first set out on the Bodhisattva path, made twelve great vows. What are these twelve?
First Great Vow: In the future, when I attain Enlightenment, may my own radiant light illuminate boundless realms. Adorned with the thirty-two marks and eighty excellent characteristics, may I perfect my form, enabling all beings to become just like me.
Second Great Vow: May I, upon attaining Enlightenment in a future life, have a body like pure crystal—luminous and clear within and without, radiant and vast, illuminating all directions. May its brilliance, more splendid than the sun and moon, form a majestic web of light. Even in the darkest realms between iron mountains, in places of deep obscurity, may all beings see one another clearly. Should any wander in the darkness of this world, may they behold my light and be awakened by it, gaining clarity to carry out all their tasks with ease.
Third Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, may I, through boundless and limitless wisdom and skillful means, enable all sentient beings to enjoy inexhaustible resources.
Fourth Great Vow: May I, upon attaining Enlightenment in a future life, enable all beings who walk upon wrong paths to tread the true path of Enlightenment. May those who follow the ways of the Hearers or the Solitary Realizers also be established in the Great Vehicle.
"Fifth Great Vow: May I, upon attaining Enlightenment in a future life, ensure that all beings who cultivate pure conduct within my Dharma shall receive the precepts in full, guarding well the three karmic actions, without any violation or fall into the lower realms. Should any violate them, upon hearing my name, if they single-mindedly uphold it, sincerely confess their faults, they shall regain purity, all the way to Enlightenment."
"Sixth Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in future lives, if any sentient beings suffer from physical defects, ugliness, dullness, deafness, blindness, muteness, lameness, hunchback, leprosy, madness, or any other afflictions—if they hear my name and sincerely recite it, may they all become dignified and wholesome, with every illness cured."
"Seventh Great Vow: May I, upon attaining Enlightenment in a future life, bring relief to all beings who suffer from poverty, hardship, and homelessness, who are afflicted by many illnesses without medicine or care. May they, upon hearing my name even briefly, find their sicknesses dispelled, their families and support strengthened, their resources abundant, and their bodies and minds at ease—all the way to Enlightenment."
"The Eighth Great Vow: May I, upon attaining enlightenment in a future life, if there are women who are tormented by the sufferings of being female, who deeply loathe and wish to abandon their female form—should they hear my name, sincerely recite it, then in their present life they will transform into men, possessing the full characteristics of a male, all the way until enlightenment."
"Ninth Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, may I enable all beings to break free from the snares of Mara. May I gather and accept those who hold various erroneous views, leading them to develop right understanding, gradually guiding them to practice the ways of the bodhisattva, all the way to Enlightenment."
The Tenth Great Vow: May I, upon attaining Enlightenment in a future life, ensure that all beings who are bound by royal law, imprisoned in dungeons, shackled, whipped, or even sentenced to the most severe punishments, and who suffer numerous other agonies, oppressed by anxiety and distress without a moment of joy—if they hear my name, through the power of my merit and majestic spiritual might, may they be freed from all sorrow and suffering, all the way to Enlightenment.
"Eleventh Great Vow: When I attain Enlightenment in a future life, if any beings, tormented by the pangs of hunger, commit evil deeds in their desperate search for food; if they hear my name and sincerely recite it, I shall first provide them with exquisite food and drink, satisfying them to their heart's content, and afterward bestow upon them the taste of Dharma, enabling them to abide in supreme bliss, all the way until they attain Enlightenment."
"The Twelfth Great Vow: May I, when I attain Enlightenment in a future life, ensure that any being who lacks clothing and is tormented by mosquitoes, flies, cold, or heat—if they hear my name and sincerely recite it—will, according to their wishes, obtain all kinds of exquisite garments, precious ornaments, music, incense, and flowers, so that all their needs are met. May they be freed from all suffering and distress, all the way until they attain Enlightenment."
"Manjushri, these are the twelve sublime and supreme vows made by the Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Radiance Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, while he was practicing the Bodhisattva path."
