> Conversation with Qu Taixu

> I, as a humble monk, carried a single alms bowl and traveled to King's City. I first visited the Elder Venerable. Touched by your wise and compassionate guidance, I suddenly entered the non-dual Dharma gate. We shared the same couch and conversed intimately, often talking through the entire night. This inspired many beginning Bodhisattvas to awaken the supreme Enlightened Mind. This entire Prajna connection of merit was all sustained by your long-cherished vows. Sadly, in this degenerate age of the Dharma, this path is rarely followed. Searching for ultimate truth, even among those dwelling in the realm of form and appearance, feels like meeting empty shells of people. I cannot help but slap my thighs in deep sorrow. As for lifting the fog of doubt from the nature of Reality, or seeking the mysterious pearl in the ocean of Wisdom—without your hand, O Elder, who can be like the one who grasped the elusive? At our farewell west of the city, snow filled the Jeta Grove. Your few parting words revealed your heart, piercing my very marrow. This caused heavenly flowers to shower down in abundance, Brahma gods to bow in reverence, the perfect brightness of Wisdom's sun to illuminate, and Mara's palaces to shatter and collapse. This karmic connection is no small thing. After parting, though we are separated by three thousand miles, not a single step has moved. Amidst millions of Dharma doors, my mind dwells on nothing. Traveling along the road, I arrived at Nanjing only on the Winter Solstice. All was well. The great Canon I carried entered the monastery, its radiant relics scattered through the sky, auspicious light appearing on the pagoda's banner. Each light pointed north, and they intertwined like a net of netting. Pebbles and jungles all turned to gold. Humans and gods gazed up in reverence, a sight beyond counting. The proof of this divine response reaches such a height. Is this not your final half-gatha, the prophecy you bestowed beforehand? I completed my work within a month, then returned to the sea. On the twenty-fifth, the year's end drew near, and the scriptures were enshrined in the cave. Together with fellow practitioners of the path, we chanted your immeasurable principles, each one awakening the mind of Supreme Buddhahood. But I wonder, in Vimalakirti's chamber, are those great Bodhisattvas weary or not in body and mind?
