### 與王念西太史

> With Imperial Scholar Wang Nianxi

般若種子。在五蘊中。如玉在璞。珠在淵。任其埋藏深厚。光明自然發輝。昔與座下晤語祇園。真不減荊山合浦也。別來幻化如斯。在智眼觀之。了罔陳迹。然性海波瀾。惟遊泳者。識其深廣耳。山野年來。坐此無多增進。但於今事門頭。目前無異法耳。古人謂淨穢隨心。苦樂在己。心外無法。真不吾欺。所入楞伽境界。殆非尋常恃佛法知見。可能凑泊。即山野生平行脚。到水窮山盡處。方見佛祖鼻孔。只在眾生穿衣吃飯中也。寄入慧目。略見此番行脚。不敢辜　聖恩。負知己也。法華擊節。亦自偶爾。狹路相逢處拈來。蓋發前人所未發。雖出一己之見。實可諸佛之心。願座下試並披剝。儻有一得。幸廣法施。令一切見聞。頓入自心現量。徹諸法實相。則眉閒白毫相光。突出於座下一毛端頭也。此中生涯。具見於此。無餘蘊矣。勺原同處經年亦深用錐劄。雖識痛癢。猶未徹心酸鼻。大段佛性義。自有時節因緣耳。惟法界海慧。自他不隔。即此覿面無容贅談。第願以法資神。無忘度生事業。是所至禱。

> The seed of wisdom. Within the five aggregates, it is like jade hidden in uncut stone, or a pearl lying deep in the abyss. No matter how deeply it is buried, its radiance will naturally shine forth. When we met and conversed in the Jeta Grove, it was truly no less than discovering jade in Mount Jing or pearls in Hepu. Since parting, the world has transformed in such a way, yet to the eye of wisdom, all traces of change are but illusions. However, the waves of the nature-ocean—only those who swim in it can fathom its depth and breadth. In recent years, my practice has not progressed much, yet in the affairs of the present moment, there is nothing different from what lies before me. The ancients said: purity and impurity follow the mind; suffering and joy reside within oneself. There is no dharma outside the mind—truly, they did not deceive us. The state of the Lankavatara Sutra I have entered is far beyond what ordinary reliance on Buddhist knowledge and views can grasp. Even in my lifelong journey as a monk, it was only when I reached the point where the water ends and the mountains cease that I realized the nostrils of the Buddhas and patriarchs are found in the very acts of sentient beings eating, drinking, and dressing. I send this to your wise eyes, hoping you may glimpse this journey of mine. I dare not betray the grace of the sages or disappoint those who understand me. The striking of the Dharma Flower is also a chance occurrence—encountered on a narrow path and picked up to reveal what predecessors have not yet expressed. Though it arises from my own insight, it truly resonates with the heart of all Buddhas. I hope you will examine it thoroughly. If there is even a single gain, may you widely bestow the Dharma, enabling all who see and hear to instantly enter the self-aware measure of their own minds and penetrate the true nature of all phenomena. Then, the white curl of light between the eyebrows will suddenly emerge from the tip of a single hair on your body. The essence of this life is fully revealed here—nothing remains hidden. Over the years, sharing the same space with Shao Yuan, I have also deeply applied the prodding of an awl. Though he recognizes pain and itch, he has yet to fully experience the ache in the heart and the sting in the nose. The great matter of Buddha-nature has its own time and conditions. Only the ocean-like wisdom of the Dharma realm knows no separation between self and other. In this face-to-face encounter, there is no need for excessive words. I only pray that you nurture your spirit with the Dharma and never forget the work of liberating sentient beings. This is my deepest hope.
