> Reply to Commander Yang Yuanru

> The ancients said, "In the midst of a chaotic, feverish world, it is difficult to maintain a cool eye." The three realms offer no peace; they are like a house on fire. Anyone who enters or leaves is inevitably scorched by its flames. To find a patch of cool, clear ground amidst the raging fire is something only a person with a cool eye can achieve. If, in a single moment, one's thought can become cool and clear, then instantly the entire earth will appear as ice. One will no longer seek a refuge within the world of body and mind. Those great beings of the past, who could play freely in the arena of birth and death, transforming worldly toil into the work of a Buddha and turning afflictions into enlightenment—they relied solely on this one cool eye and a cool, composed heart. What other miraculous powers or wondrous functions did they need? These words are very easy to understand, yet very difficult to truly see. Take, for example, the Buddhas and patriarchs, who took the single phrase "all phenomena are like a dream" as the essential path to liberation from the world. Both the wise and the foolish in this world can generally say, "Life is like a dream." The words may sound similar, but the meaning is not. In truth, they have not genuinely and directly seen through the fact that life is like a dream. If one truly sees through it, then naturally one can turn and walk away from all confrontations involving honor and disgrace, profit and loss, right and wrong. Who would dare to stand in their way? In reality, there is nothing particularly mysterious about this. However, for the very first step, there is indeed a method. We, living in this world, must first take the affairs of a dream and try to bring them before our eyes, examining them carefully. We must see clearly, until we cannot help but burst out laughing. At that point, we will suddenly feel that the usual saying "like a dream" is completely different. Then, in the same way, with a single thought, we turn and place our present circumstances into the dream, examining them carefully. When we see them as murky, heavy, and topsy-turvy, suddenly we awaken with a start. Looking back then on our entire life, all the various states we have experienced—if we search for them earnestly, they are utterly unobtainable. Within this "utterly unobtainable" lies the first gateway through which all Buddhas and patriarchs emerge from birth and death.
