Shurangama Sutra Comprehensive Commentary (楞嚴經通議)

Preface to the Reprint of the Comprehensive Commentary on the Surangama Sutra

What a great teaching this is! The Tathāgata's golden-mouthed words of truth, and the patriarchs' compassionate explanations—yet when seeking what is wondrous and can be entered, profound yet easy to awaken to, nothing compares to Great Master Hanshan's *Comprehensive Commentary on the Surangama Sutra*! Its essential purport shines clear, its words are incisive and concise; it does not depart from the text to reveal the wondrous, nor does it get stuck on phrases to discuss the arcane. It harmonizes the two schools of Nature and Characteristics, penetrates the single mind's Three Contemplations, accords with the definitive purport, and omits not the slightest detail; root and branches are perfectly interpenetrating, beginning and end run through as one—truly the compass of the teaching garden and the true eye of the Chan school!

(At leisure) When I first donned the black robes in the cloud mountains, I then obtained a dream-traveled incomplete copy and delighted in its handed-down instructions and Dharma teachings—none of it but thorough and awe-inspiring. When I later heard lectures on the Surangama and had occasion to read the various masters' commentaries, I then learned that the Great Master had also illuminated this sutra in a work titled *Comprehensive Commentary*. Thereupon I engraved it in my heart, yet had not seen it even once; from then on more than ten years passed, and never did my thoughts fail to dwell on this book! In the spring of the Jiamu year I wandered as a cloud to Mount Tai, and indeed fulfilled my former wish, dissolving feverish affliction in a single moment and melting the ice of my heart in an instant. Happening to cast my eyes upon it, my joy exceeded the ordinary; from this I could no longer bear to wait idly, and calling together the conditions, I had it carved and printed. Truly my heart was set on making it public to fellow seekers; I dare not claim to be spreading the Master's Dharma stream!
