Zhao Lun Brief Commentary (肇論略注)

The Essential Meaning of the Teaching

The "Fundamental Principles" section explains the foundational tenets upon which the arguments are based. These four treatises were not composed at the same time; after each was completed, they were unified under the meaning of these fundamental principles. Essentially, what is taken as fundamental is the One Mind, through which the origins of all phenomena—delusion and awakening, ordinary beings and sages—are fully explored. Just as the *Awakening of Faith* takes the One Mind as its core, encompassing both the Dharma and its meaning, it is thus called the "Fundamental Principles."

Original Nature, True Reality, Dharma Nature, Inherent Emptiness, and Dependent Arising—these are all expressions of the same essential truth.

This principle selects the essential teachings, forming the foundation of the Four Treatises.

**Original Non-Being** directly points to the tranquil, extinguished single mind, in which not a single dharma truly exists. It is apart from all appearances, utterly transcending the sacred and the ordinary. Thus it is called "Original Non-Being"—it is not something we reason into non-existence. All dharmas are merely manifestations produced by the single mind according to conditions. The mind is originally unproduced; it only arises when conditions meet. Thus it is called "Conditional Arising."

Since all dharmas produced by conditions lack inherent substance, they are empty by nature because they are conditionally produced. Thus it is called "Nature-Empty." Since they are entirely transformations of True Suchness, it is called "Dharma-Nature." The dharmas formed by True Suchness and Dharma-Nature—True Suchness being without characteristics—means the fundamental substance of all dharmas is tranquil and extinguished. Thus it is called "True Mark."

Therefore, **Original Non-Being** is the substance of the single mind. **Conditional Arising** is the function of the single mind. **True Mark, Dharma-Nature, and Nature-Empty** are all meanings describing the myriad dharmas formed by the single mind; thus they are said to be a single meaning. Based on the dharma of the single mind, these Four Treatises are established: "Non-Movement" corresponds to the conventional, "Not-True" corresponds to the true. The Two Truths are the object of contemplation, Prajñā (Wisdom) is the mind capable of contemplation. The Three Treatises are the cause, Nirvāṇa is the fruit. Therefore, this principle stands first as the fundamental doctrine.

Why is this so?(This question arises because each of the four theories has its own basis.) All phenomena arise from the convergence of conditions.

This section highlights the unchanging essence of the teaching. The one mind of still cessation originally has no phenomena. What originally did not exist now appears, so it is said to arise from the meeting of conditions.

Things arise when conditions come together. Before that arising, they did not exist. When conditions fall apart, they cease.

This reveals that the mind is fundamentally unborn; it is conditions that arise, not the mind. Since arising is fundamentally non-arising, cessation is likewise the cessation of conditions, not the cessation of the mind. Thus the meaning of the one mind that is neither arising nor ceasing is made clear.

If something truly exists, then it cannot cease to exist.

This shows that all phenomena arising from causes and conditions are not truly real. "Truly" means really. If phenomena were truly real, they would not cease and disappear as conditions change. Since they do cease as conditions change, phenomena are not truly real.
