Path of Practice Sutra (道地經)

Chapter 2: Understanding the Five Aggregates with Wisdom

Know that this body is composed of five elements: the element of form, the element of feeling, the element of perception, the element of mental formations, and the element of consciousness. It is like how there are many households labeled as a district in the east, many households labeled as a district in the south, many households listed as a district in the west, and many households listed as a district in the north—yet no single house is by itself called a district. This analogy applies to form as well: no single form is the element of form; many forms together make up the element of form. The same is true for feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness.

Within the ten sense-bases, form exists in the sense of contact. Emotions also arise from mental objects. The hundred and eight feelings are the seeds of feeling. The hundred and eight perceptions are the seeds of perception. The hundred and eight impulses are the seeds of impulse. The hundred and eight discernments are the seeds of discernment. Thus, you should know that these five types of seeds manifest from what comes after.
