Path of Practice Sutra (道地經)

Chapter 4 on the Path to Cessation: Distinguishing the Five Aggregates and the Manifestation of Calming

That one who holds the nectar-seed and pours it on the five aggregates of clinging—for the five aggregates are the fuel, and from the light of wisdom the evil fire is destroyed. From the three realms, the one worthy of homage, I do homage: the one who holds the nectar and extinguishes the three poisons, born from the drilling of the five aggregates, whatever arises accordingly—holding the intent of wisdom, extinguishing the intent of evil fire, the honored one within the three realms, I too honor with joined palms.

From the power of wisdom, the wise one naturally attains; as one knows for oneself, so the Buddha teaches disciples to speak and practice accordingly. Having heard, from this the mind is settled, and the five aggregates are discerned and seen—one who is guarded by the power of wisdom knows purity from the Buddha himself; from what is known in the mind, things manifest accordingly. This is what the Buddha taught: one should practice and see the conduct, and it can be known. Having heard, from this concentration one discerns the five aggregates.

One who practices the path should know how to discern the five aggregates. How does the practitioner discern and know the five aggregates? Suppose in the middle of a crossroads a string of genuine pearls is dropped. A person sees it—having seen it, delight and craving arise in the mind, wanting to obtain the pearls. The person's mind is fixed on the pearls: this is the seed of the form aggregate. The delight and pleasant feeling: this is the seed of the feeling aggregate. If on top of that it is thus named "string of pearls": this is the seed of the perception aggregate. If the mind gives rise to the desire to take the string of pearls: this is the seed of the formations aggregate. From this knowing: this is the seed of the consciousness aggregate.

Thus these five kinds of mind-activities operate together upon the single string of pearls, and various actions are performed, each also performing its own. Just so, upon the single string of pearls, they operate together at one time—thus the five aggregates likewise.

What the eye sees as form, together with the five aggregates that operate alongside it—and further, what the ear hears as sound, the nose smells as scent, the mouth tastes as flavor, and the body contacts as coarse or fine—among these, the four aggregates within the body arise without a form-seed. Thus the seeds of the five aggregates are each to be distinguished and known individually.

Later, those who teach the Path to Cessation (Mārga), having distinguished and explained it in this way, receive the teaching of this sutra. Those who have not yet attained the Path take it to heart, and their minds proceed in accordance with this teaching. I too now set forth this same teaching.
