如是我聞：
Thus have I heard:
一時，佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。爾時，長老難陀著鮮淨衣，執持好鉢，意氣憍慢，陵蔑餘人，自貢高言：「我是佛弟姨母之子。」爾時眾多比丘往至佛所，頂禮佛足，在一面坐。白佛言：「世尊！難陀比丘著鮮潔衣，手持淨鉢，稱是佛弟，云是姨子，內自憍慢，陵蔑餘人。」佛聞語已，遣一比丘往召難陀。時，一比丘受佛勅已，往至其所，語難陀言：「世尊喚汝。」難陀聞已，即詣佛所，頂禮佛足，在一面立。
At one time, the Buddha was staying at Jetavana, Anathapindika's Grove, in the kingdom of Shravasti. At that time, the Elder Nanda wore bright, clean robes and carried a fine alms bowl. He was proud and arrogant in bearing, looked down on everyone else, and honored himself, saying, "I am the Buddha's younger brother, the son of his aunt." Then many monks went to where the Buddha was, bowed at the Buddha's feet, and sat to one side. They said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, the monk Nanda wears bright, clean robes and holds a clean alms bowl. He declares that he is the Buddha's younger brother and says he is the son of his aunt. Inwardly he is arrogant and looks down on everyone else." When the Buddha heard these words, he sent one monk to summon Nanda. Then that monk, having received the Buddha's command, went to where Nanda was and said to him, "The World-Honored One is calling you." When Nanda heard this, he went at once to where the Buddha was, bowed at the Buddha's feet, and stood to one side.
佛告難陀：「汝實著鮮潔衣，手持好鉢，稱是佛弟姨母之子，憍慢於人，有是事不？」難陀答言：「實爾，世尊。」
The World-Honored One asked Nanda, "Is it true that you wear fine, clean clothes, carry a fine alms bowl, and declare that you are the Buddha's brother, the son of his aunt, acting arrogant toward others—did this happen?"
Nanda replied, "It is true, World-Honored One."
佛告難陀：「汝今不應作如是事，汝今應當樂阿練若，處塚間樹下，納衣乞食。若是我弟姨母所生，應當修行如是等事。」
The Buddha said to Nanda: "You should not do such things now. You should now take delight in the ascetic practices of the forest—dwelling among the charnel grounds and beneath trees, wearing rag robes, and eating only what is received through alms. If you are my younger brother, born of my aunt, you should practice these things."
爾時，世尊即說偈言：
「我當云何見？ 難陀樂苦行，
如彼阿練若， 塚間坐乞食，
山林閑靜處， 捨欲而入定。」
佛說是偈已，諸比丘聞佛所說，歡喜奉行。
