Chapter 2: Cunda

At that time, in the assembly, there was a lay disciple, a skilled craftsman’s son from the city of Kuśinagara, named Cunda. Together with fifteen companions of the same kind, he rose from his seat, setting aside his usual demeanor, for the sake of bringing wholesome fruits to the world. He bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, joined his palms toward the Buddha, and with tears of sorrow streaming down, bowed at the Buddha’s feet and addressed him, saying:

"O World-Honored One, together with the community of monks, we humbly beseech you to accept our final offering, for the sake of liberating immeasurable beings. World-Honored One, from this day forth we shall be without a master, without kin, without refuge, without protection, without shelter, without direction—poor, hungry, and destitute. We seek from the Tathāgata the food of the future. We earnestly pray that you will compassionately accept our humble offering before entering parinirvāṇa.

World-Honored One, it is like when a kṣatriya, a brahmin, a vaiśya, or a śūdra, due to poverty, travels far to another land to labor in farming. He obtains a well-trained ox and a fertile, level field, free from sand, salt, weeds, and thorns—all he awaits is the rain from heaven. The well-trained ox represents the seven practices of body and speech; the fertile, level field represents wisdom; removing the sand, salt, weeds, and thorns represents eliminating afflictions.

World-Honored One, I now possess the trained ox, the fertile field, and have cleared away the weeds—all I await is the Tathāgata’s nectar-like rain of Dharma. I am like the poor man of the four castes, impoverished in the treasure of the supreme Dharma. I pray for your compassion to relieve our poverty and hardship, and to deliver immeasurable suffering beings. Though my offering today is meager, I hope it may suffice for the great assembly of the Tathāgata. I am now without master, without kin, without refuge—I pray for your pity, as you would have for Rāhula."

At that time, the World-Honored One—the All-Knowing One, the Unsurpassed Guide—said to Cunda: "Excellent, excellent! I will now remove poverty from you. The supreme rain of the Dharma will fall upon the field of your being, causing the sprout of the Dharma to grow. If you now wish from me long life, beauty, strength, ease, and unimpeded eloquence, I shall bestow upon you enduring life, beauty, strength, ease, and unimpeded eloquence. Why is this? Cunda, there are two kinds of offering of food, yet their fruit is not different. What are the two? The first: having received it, one attains Supreme Perfect Enlightenment. The second: having received it, one enters Nirvana. I now accept your final offering, enabling you to perfect the Perfection of Giving."

At that time, Pure Faith spoke to the Buddha, saying: "If, as the Buddha says, the merit from these two offerings is equal, this cannot be so. Why? The one who received the offering earlier had not yet exhausted his afflictions, had not attained omniscience, and could not enable beings to perfect the perfection of giving. The one who receives the offering later has already exhausted his afflictions, has attained omniscience, and can enable all beings to perfectly fulfill the perfection of giving. The earlier recipient was still an ordinary being; the later recipient is the supreme one among gods and humans. The earlier recipient had a body sustained by food, a body bound by afflictions, a final body, an impermanent body. The later recipient has a body free from afflictions, a diamond-like body, a Dharma-body, an eternal body, a boundless body. How can you say the merit from these two offerings is equal? The earlier recipient had not yet perfected the perfection of giving, nor the perfection of wisdom; he possessed only the physical eye, not the Buddha-eye nor the eye of wisdom. The later recipient has already perfected the perfection of giving and the perfection of wisdom, and possesses the Buddha-eye and the eye of wisdom. How can you say the merit from these two offerings is equal? World-Honored One, the earlier recipient, after receiving the offering, consumed it, it was digested in his stomach, and he gained life, complexion, strength, comfort, and unimpeded eloquence. The later recipient does not eat, does not digest, and gains none of these five benefits. How can you say the merit from these two offerings is equal?"

The Buddha said: "Good man! For countless, boundless, immeasurable eons, the Tathagata has had no body sustained by food, no body of afflictions, no body with an end. He has an eternal body, a Dharma body, a diamond-like body. Good man! Those who have not yet seen the Buddha-nature are said to have a body of afflictions, a mixed-nourishment body, a body with an end. At that time, after receiving food and drink, the bodhisattva enters the diamond-like samadhi. Once this food is digested, he immediately sees the Buddha-nature and attains supreme, perfect enlightenment. Therefore, I say the fruits of these two offerings are equal, without difference. At that time, the bodhisattva destroys the four maras; now, upon entering nirvana, he also destroys the four maras. Therefore, I say the fruits of these two offerings are equal, without difference. At that time, although the bodhisattva did not extensively expound the twelve divisions of the scriptures, he had already fully penetrated them; now, upon entering nirvana, he extensively expounds and explains them for the sake of all beings. Therefore, I say the fruits of these two offerings are equal, without difference."

"Good man, the body of the Tathagata has not taken food or drink for countless, immeasurable kalpas. Yet for the sake of the disciples, I speak of having first accepted the milk porridge offered by the two cowherd girls, Nanda and Nandabala, and only then attaining Supreme Perfect Enlightenment. In truth, I do not eat. Now, for the sake of this entire great assembly, I accept your final offering—yet in reality, I do not consume it."

At that time, the great assembly, hearing that the Buddha, the World-Honored One, out of compassion for the entire gathering, had accepted Cunda's final offering, was filled with joy and leapt with delight. Together they exclaimed: "Excellent, excellent! Rare indeed, Cunda! The name you bear is not in vain. 'Cunda' means 'one who understands profound meaning.' You have now established such great significance; therefore, your name is fittingly derived from its meaning, and so you are called Cunda. In this present life, you have attained great renown and benefit, fulfilling your virtuous aspirations. How marvelous, Cunda! Born among humans, you have also obtained the rare and supreme benefit. Excellent, Cunda! Just as the udumbara flower is rare in the world, so too is the appearance of a Buddha in the world exceedingly rare; to encounter the Buddha, to give rise to faith, and to hear the Dharma is also rare; and to be able to make the final offering to the Buddha on the verge of Nirvana is even rarer than that. Homage to Cunda! Homage to Cunda! You have now perfected the perfection of giving. Like the autumn moon on the fifteenth night, pure and perfectly full, free from all clouds and haze, gazed upon by all beings—so too are you, gazed upon by us all. The Buddha has accepted your final offering, enabling you to fully accomplish the perfection of giving. Homage to Cunda! Therefore, it is said that you are like the moon at its fullest, beheld by all beings. Homage to Cunda! Though you bear a human form, your mind is like the Buddha's mind. You, Cunda, are truly a child of the Buddha, no different from Rahula."

At that moment, the assembly then spoke in verse:

"You, though born in human form, have already surpassed the sixth heaven. I and all beings now bow our heads to request of you.

Most honored one among humans, now about to enter Nirvana, please have compassion for us. We earnestly hope you will swiftly entreat the Buddha to remain long in this world, bringing benefit to countless beings, expounding the supreme nectar of Dharma, praised by the wise.

If you do not entreat the Buddha, my life will not be preserved. Therefore, for this reason, we bow and beseech the Tamer of Men."

At that moment, Cunda was filled with joy and leaped with excitement, just like someone whose parents had passed away suddenly coming back to life—so too was Cunda’s joy. He rose again, bowed to the Buddha, and spoke these verses:

佛如優曇花, 值遇生信難;
我今於此處, 不求天人身;
如須彌寶山, 安處于大海;
猶如虛空中, 雲起得清涼;

How wonderful! I have gained my own benefit, Having obtained this precious human form, Cleansed of greed, anger, and the rest, Forever free from the three wretched realms.

How wonderful! I have gained my own benefit, Encountering a treasure of gold, Meeting the Tamer of Beings, With no fear of falling into animal rebirth.

The Buddha is like the Udumbara flower, Rare indeed to encounter and have faith; Having met him, I planted wholesome roots, Forever ending the suffering of hungry ghosts, And also diminishing the kind Of Asura beings.

A mustard seed landing on a needle's point Is easier than the Buddha's appearance. Through my perfect generosity, I cross beyond the births and deaths of gods and humans.

The Buddha is unstained by worldly ways, Like a lotus in water, Skillfully severing the seeds of existence's peak, Forever crossing the stream of birth and death.

To be born human in the world is difficult, To encounter a Buddha's time is also rare, Like a blind turtle in the vast ocean Meeting a floating log with a hole.

The offering I now present, I wish to gain the supreme reward: All the knots of afflictions, Shattered without resistance.

Here and now, I do not seek A heavenly or human body; Even if I obtained one, My heart would not find joy in it.

The Tathāgata accepts my offering, My joy is beyond measure, Like the foul-smelling Erā flower Yielding sandalwood fragrance.

My being is like the Erā flower, The Tathāgata accepts my offering, And from it arises sandalwood scent, Therefore I rejoice.

I now receive visible reward, The most sublime and wonderful state: Śakra, Brahmā, and all the gods Come to make offerings to me.

All beings in the world Are filled with great distress, Knowing the World-Honored One Now wishes to enter Nirvāṇa.

They cry out loudly, saying: "The world has lost its Tamer." Do not abandon sentient beings, But regard them as your only child.

The Tathāgata among the Sangha Expounds the supreme Dharma, Like Mount Sumeru, jewel of mountains, Set firm within the great sea.

The Buddha's wisdom skillfully severs Our darkness of ignorance, Like clouds in the empty sky Bringing cooling shade.

The Tathāgata skillfully removes All afflictions, Like the sun at dawn Dispelling clouds, its light shining everywhere.

All these beings, With longing and increasing sorrow, Are all adrift in the bitter waters Of birth and death.

Therefore, O World-Honored One! Increase the faith of beings, To cut off the suffering of birth and death, And dwell long in the world.

The Buddha said to Chunda, "Indeed, it is just as you say: 'It is rare for a Buddha to appear in the world, as rare as the udumbara flower; to encounter the Buddha and give rise to faith is also exceedingly rare; and to make the final offering to the Buddha on the verge of his Nirvana, fulfilling the perfection of generosity, is rarer still.' Now, Chunda, do not grieve deeply. Instead, you should rejoice and feel profoundly fortunate to have made this final offering to the Tathagata, thus perfecting the paramita of generosity. You should not ask the Buddha to remain long in the world. Now, you should contemplate that all states of the Buddhas are impermanent; the nature and characteristics of all conditioned things are likewise so."

Then he spoke this verse to Chunda:

扼縛、癰瘡等, 根本無義利;

All beings in this world, Those who are born must face death. Though a lifespan may seem endless, It must inevitably come to an end.

What flourishes must decline, What gathers must part. Youth does not last long, Vitality is assailed by sickness. Life is swallowed by death, There is nothing that endures forever.

Even kings who wield great power, With influence unmatched by any, All must pass away; So too does life.

The wheel of suffering knows no bounds, Turning endlessly without rest. The three realms are all impermanent, All states of existence bring no lasting joy. By their very nature, All things are empty and without substance.

The cycle of decay continues, Always accompanied by sorrow and worry, By fear, by all kinds of faults— Old age, sickness, death, and decline. These are boundless, Easily destroyed, assailed by adversaries, Wrapped in the bonds of afflictions, Like a silkworm trapped in its cocoon.

How could one who possesses wisdom Find delight in such a place?

This body is a gathering of suffering, All of it impure, A yoke, a festering sore— At its root, it holds no true benefit. Even the bodies of the gods above Are no different.

All desires are impermanent, Therefore I do not cling to them. Turning away from desire, contemplating wisely, I realize the true nature of reality.

Having completely severed all states of existence, Today I shall attain Nirvana. I have crossed to the far shore, Transcended all suffering. Therefore, from this day forth, I shall experience only the highest bliss.

At that time, Pure Faith said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, it is so, it is so, truly as the sacred teaching says. The wisdom I possess now is shallow and slight, like that of a tiny mosquito—how could I fathom the profound meaning of the Tathāgata's Nirvana? World-Honored One, I am now among the great bodhisattvas—those dragon-like beings who have severed all fetters and outflows—such as Mañjuśrī, the Dharma Prince. World-Honored One, it is like a young novice who has just left home: though he has not yet fully received the precepts, he is already counted among the Sangha. So too am I—by the power of the Buddha and the bodhisattvas' spiritual abilities, I find myself numbered among such great bodhisattvas. Therefore, I now wish that the Tathāgata would long abide in the world and not enter Nirvana. Just as a starving person would never vomit up food, so too do I pray that the World-Honored One would likewise dwell forever in the world and not enter Nirvana."

At that time, the Dharma Prince Manjushri said to Chunda, "Chunda, you should not speak in this way, saying, 'I wish the Tathagata would remain in the world forever and not enter final nirvana, just as a starving person never vomits up food.' You should now contemplate the nature and characteristics of all conditioned phenomena. By contemplating in this way, you will attain the samadhi of emptiness. If you seek the true Dharma, you should learn in this manner."

Chunda asked, "Manjushri, the Tathagata is the most revered and supreme among all beings in the heavens and the human realm. How could such a Tathagata be subject to conditioned existence? If he were subject to conditioned existence, he would be subject to birth and death. Like a water bubble, quickly arising and quickly vanishing, coming and going like a turning wheel—all conditioned phenomena are like this. I have heard that the lifespans of heavenly beings are extremely long. Why then is the World-Honored One, the supreme among heavenly beings, so short-lived, not even reaching a hundred years? It is like a village chief who, having gained power and influence, can control others. But when his merit is exhausted, he falls into poverty and low status, despised by others and driven by their commands. Why? Because he has lost his power. The World-Honored One is likewise the same as all conditioned phenomena. If he is the same as all conditioned phenomena, he cannot be called the supreme among heavenly beings. Why? Because conditioned phenomena are the very nature of birth and death. Therefore, Manjushri, do not regard the Tathagata as being the same as conditioned phenomena."

Furthermore, Manjushri, how can one claim that the Tathagata is the same as all conditioned phenomena, whether speaking from knowledge or ignorance? If the Tathagata were the same as all conditioned phenomena, then it could not be said that he is the Lord of Gods in the three realms, the sovereign King of the Dharma.

For example, a king may have a mighty warrior whose strength is said to rival a thousand men, and no one can subdue him. Thus, this warrior is called "the equal of a thousand." The king favors him, bestows titles, rewards him generously, and grants him natural privileges. He is called "the equal of a thousand" not necessarily because he can physically overcome a thousand men, but because his various skills and abilities surpass those of a thousand. Hence, he is given that title.

Similarly, the Tathagata subdues the demons of afflictions, the aggregates, death, and celestial beings. Therefore, the Tathagata is revered as the Lord of the three realms. Like the warrior who is called "the equal of a thousand," the Tathagata, through such causes and conditions, attains and fully possesses immeasurable true virtues. Thus, he is called the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One.

Manjushri, you should not conceive or discriminate, thinking that the Dharma of the Tathagata is the same as all conditioned phenomena. For instance, when a wealthy elder has a son, a fortune-teller predicts that the child will have a short lifespan. Upon hearing this, the parents know he cannot inherit and sustain the family lineage, so they no longer cherish him and regard him as worthless. A short-lived person is not respected or remembered by monastics, brahmins, or people of any age or gender.

If the Tathagata were the same as all conditioned phenomena, he would likewise not be revered or honored by all beings in the world, whether human or divine. The unchanging, unwavering true Dharma spoken by the Tathagata would also have no one to receive it. Therefore, Manjushri, you should not say that the Tathagata is the same as all conditioned phenomena.

Furthermore, Manjushri, consider the case of a poor woman. She had no home or protector, and was afflicted by illness, hunger, and thirst. Wandering as a beggar, she took shelter in a guesthouse and gave birth to a child there. The owner of the guesthouse drove her out. Carrying her child, she set out for another country. Along the way, she encountered fierce wind and rain, bitter cold, and was bitten by swarms of mosquitoes, horseflies, bees, and poisonous insects. Coming to the Ganges River, she held her child and tried to cross. The current was swift, but she would not let go. In the end, both mother and child drowned. Because of the merit of this woman's loving thoughts, after her death she was reborn in the Brahma Heaven.

Manjushri, if a virtuous man wishes to uphold the true Dharma, he should not say, "The Tathagata is the same as all conditioned phenomena," or "The Tathagata is different from all conditioned phenomena." He should only reflect on himself: "I am foolish and lack the eye of wisdom. The true Dharma of the Tathagata is inconceivable." Therefore, one should not declare, "The Tathagata is definitely conditioned," or "The Tathagata is definitely unconditioned." If one has right view, one should say, "The Tathagata is definitely unconditioned." Why? Because he gives rise to wholesome dharmas in beings and gives rise to compassion. Just as that poor woman, out of love for her child, gave up her life in the Ganges River.

"Good man! A Bodhisattva who upholds the Dharma should act in the same way—even at the cost of life, never say: 'The Tathāgata is like conditioned phenomena.' Instead, declare: 'The Tathāgata is like the unconditioned.' By declaring that the Tathāgata is like the unconditioned, one attains Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, just as that woman was reborn in the Brahma Heaven. Why? Because of upholding the Dharma. What does it mean to uphold the Dharma? It means to declare: 'The Tathāgata is like the unconditioned.' Good man! Such a person, even without seeking liberation, will naturally attain liberation, just as that poor woman did not seek the Brahma Heaven, yet the Brahma Heaven came to her."

Manjushri, imagine a person on a long journey, who becomes utterly exhausted midway and takes shelter in another’s house. While asleep, the room suddenly bursts into flames. Startled awake, he immediately thinks to himself: “I am certain to die now.” Filled with shame, he wraps his robe tightly around himself and passes away, only to be reborn in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. From then on, he becomes a Great Brahma King for eighty lifetimes, and for a hundred thousand lifetimes he is born among humans as a Wheel-Turning Sage King. Such a person will never again fall into the three lower realms, but will continuously be reborn in places of peace and happiness. For this reason, Manjushri, if a virtuous man or woman possesses a sense of shame, they should not regard the Buddha as being the same as all conditioned phenomena.

Manjushri! Heretics and those with wrong views may claim that the Tathagata is the same as conditioned phenomena. Monks who uphold the precepts should not harbor such thoughts about the Tathagata—thinking of him as conditioned. To say that the Tathagata is conditioned is to speak falsely. Know that such a person, upon death, will fall into hell, just as one who dwells in their own house.

Manjushri! The Tathagata's true nature is unconditioned; it should not be spoken of as conditioned. From this day forth, in the midst of birth and death, you should abandon ignorance and seek true wisdom. Understand that the Tathagata is unconditioned. If you can contemplate the Tathagata in this way, you will fully attain the thirty-two marks and swiftly achieve unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment.

At that time, Manjushri, the Dharma Prince, praised Chunda, saying: "Excellent, excellent! Good man, you have now created the cause for long life, for you know that the Tathagata is the eternal Dharma, the unchanging Dharma, the unconditioned Dharma. You have thus skillfully concealed the conditioned aspects of the Tathagata. Just as a person who has been burned covers their body out of shame, with this wholesome thought they are reborn in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, then become a Brahma King or a Wheel-Turning Sage King, never falling into the evil realms, always enjoying peace and happiness. You are likewise: by skillfully concealing the conditioned aspects of the Tathagata, in the future you will certainly attain the thirty-two marks and eighty excellent characteristics, fully possess the eighteen unique qualities of a Buddha, enjoy immeasurable life, transcend birth and death, always experience peace and happiness, and before long achieve perfect, complete enlightenment."

Chunda, the Tathagata will later elaborate in detail. Both you and I shall also cover the conditioned aspects of the Tathagata. For now, set aside the conditioned and the unconditioned. You should swiftly offer the meal at this time—such giving is the foremost among all offerings. When monks, nuns, laymen, or laywomen are weary from a long journey, whatever they require should be provided purely and promptly. Such timely giving fulfills the fundamental seed of the perfection of generosity. Chunda, if there is a final offering to the Buddha and the Sangha—whether much or little, sufficient or insufficient—it should be given swiftly and at the right time. The Tathagata is about to enter parinirvana.

Chunda replied, "Manjushri, why are you so concerned about this food, asking whether it is much or little, sufficient or insufficient, urging me to offer it now? Manjushri, in the past, the Tathagata endured six years of ascetic practice and sustained himself. How much more so for this brief moment today? Manjushri, do you truly believe the Tathagata, the Perfectly Enlightened One, accepts this food? Yet I know for certain: the body of the Tathagata is the Dharma-body, not a body sustained by food."

At that time, the Buddha said to Manjushri: "It is so, it is so, just as Chunda has said. Excellent, Chunda! You have attained profound and subtle wisdom, and have deeply entered the profound teachings of the Great Vehicle."

Manjushri said to Chunda, "If you understand that the Tathagata is unconditioned, and that the Tathagata's body is indeed long-lived, then this understanding is pleasing to the Buddha."

Chunda replied, "The Tathagata's joy is not for me alone, but for all beings."

Manjushri said, "The Tathagata is pleased with you, and with all of us beings as well."

Chunda replied, "You should not say, 'The Tathagata is pleased.' To speak of being pleased is a deluded thought. Where there is deluded thought, there is birth and death. Where there is birth and death, there is conditioned existence. Therefore, Manjushri, do not say that the Tathagata is conditioned. If you say the Tathagata is conditioned, then both you and I are walking the path of delusion. Manjushri, the Tathagata has no thought of attachment. Attachment is like a cow’s affection for her calf—though hungry and thirsty, she goes out seeking water and grass, and whether she finds enough or not, she suddenly turns back. The Buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have no such thought. They regard all beings equally as Rahula. Such a thought is the realm of the Buddha’s wisdom. Manjushri, it is like a king who trains fine horses: if he tries to make a donkey keep pace with them, it is impossible. So it is with you and me—to fully comprehend the Tathagata’s profound and subtle depths is likewise impossible. Manjushri, it is like the garuda bird soaring through the sky for countless leagues, looking down upon the great ocean and seeing clearly all within the waters—fish, turtles, sea monsters, dragons, and the like—and seeing its own reflection as clearly as images in a bright mirror. Ordinary people, with their limited wisdom, cannot fathom what is seen in this way. So it is with you and me—we cannot fathom the wisdom of the Tathagata."

Manjushri said to Shunda, "Exactly so, exactly so. It is as you have said. I am not unaware of this matter; I simply wished to test your understanding of the bodhisattva path."

At that moment, the World-Honored One emitted various rays of light from his face, illuminating the body of Manjushri. When Manjushri encountered this light, he immediately understood what it meant. He promptly said to Chunda, "The Tathagata is now showing this auspicious sign. He will soon enter Nirvana. The final offering you have prepared should be presented to the Buddha and the assembly without delay. Chunda, you should know that the Tathagata's emission of these various rays of light is not without cause." Upon hearing this, Chunda was overcome with sorrow and fell silent.

The Buddha said to Cunda, "The offering you present to the Buddha and the assembly is perfectly timed. The Tathagata is about to enter Nirvana." He repeated this a second and a third time.

At that moment, Chunda, upon hearing the Buddha's words, cried out in a loud voice, weeping bitterly and saying with a choked sob: "How tragic, how tragic! The world is now empty." Then he addressed the assembly: "Let all of us now prostrate ourselves with our five limbs touching the ground, and with one voice, plead with the Buddha not to enter Nirvana."

At that time, the World-Honored One further said to Chunda: "Do not weep so bitterly or let your mind be disturbed. You should contemplate this body as being like a banana tree, a shimmering heat haze, a water bubble, an illusion, a mirage city, a broken vessel, a flash of lightning. It is also like a drawing on water, a prisoner facing execution, a ripe fruit, a piece of meat, like the end of a woven thread, like a pestle rising and falling. You should observe all conditioned phenomena as if they were poisoned food—all that is formed and conditioned is fraught with many faults and afflictions."

Then Chunda spoke to the Buddha once more: "Since the Tathagata does not wish to remain long in this world, how can I not weep? Alas, alas! The world is empty. I beseech you, World-Honored One, out of compassion for us and all beings, to remain long in this world and not enter Nirvana."

The Buddha said to Cunda, "You should not speak like this, saying, 'Out of compassion for me, please remain in this world for a long time.' It is precisely out of compassion for you and all beings that I now wish to enter Nirvana. Why is this? Because such is the nature of all Buddhas—and indeed, of all conditioned things. For this reason, the Buddhas have spoken this verse:"

"All conditioned things are impermanent by nature. Once arisen, they do not abide; to find peace in their cessation is true happiness."

Chunda, you should now observe that all conditioned things are impure, that all phenomena are without self, impermanent, and unstable. This body is filled with countless faults and afflictions, just like a water bubble. Therefore, you should not weep.

At that time, Cunda again spoke to the Buddha, saying: "Indeed, indeed, truly as you have taught. Although I know that the Tathagata skillfully manifests entry into Nirvana, I cannot help but feel sorrow and distress. Yet, upon further reflection, I also give rise to joy and delight."

The Buddha praised Cunda, saying: "Excellent, excellent. You are able to understand that the Tathagata, appearing in the same manner as all beings, skillfully manifests Nirvana. Cunda, listen now: Just as the Sharasa birds gather at Lake Anavatapta in the springtime, so too do all Buddhas come to this place. Cunda, you should not dwell on whether Buddhas live long or short lives. All phenomena are like illusions, and within them, the Tathagata, through skillful means, remains unstained. Why is this? Because such is the nature of all Buddhas. Cunda, I now accept your offering to enable you to cross beyond the cycle of birth and death and all defilements. If any human or heavenly being makes this final offering to me, they will all attain the unwavering fruit and experience lasting peace and joy. Why? Because I am a field of merit for all beings. If you wish to further become a field of merit for all beings, quickly prepare your offering and do not delay."

Then, for the sake of all beings attaining liberation, Chunda, lowering his head and holding back tears, addressed the Buddha: "Excellent, World-Honored One! If I were worthy to be a field of merit, then I would be able to understand the Tathagata's Nirvana and what is not Nirvana. But now, we disciples and solitary realizers—our wisdom is like that of a mosquito or a gnat; truly, we cannot fathom the Tathagata's Nirvana or what is not Nirvana."

At that time, Chunda and his followers, sorrowful and weeping, surrounded the Tathagata, offering incense and scattering flowers, serving with utmost devotion. Then, together with Manjushri, they rose from their seats and departed to prepare the meal offering.
