Now, I wish to explain the *Abhidharma-hṛdaya* for the benefit of disciples.
Question: There is no need for explanation. Why? Because the ancient masters have already explained the *Abhidharma-hṛdaya* for the benefit of disciples, so no further explanation is required.
Answer: That is not so—an explanation is indeed necessary. Why? Although the ancient masters explained the *Abhidharma-hṛdaya*, their explanations were either too extensive or too brief. Those who have not yet studied it become confused and weary, unable to grasp its meaning. Now, I will avoid both extremes of length and brevity, and simply illuminate the true nature of the sutras. Therefore, an explanation is needed.
Question: Why explain the *Abhidharma-hṛdaya* for the benefit of disciples?
Answer: It presents the correct characteristics of phenomena without distortion. Explaining these correct characteristics helps disciples awaken to the truth, thereby freeing them from faults, cultivating virtues, and attaining the supreme benefit of courage in the ultimate truth.
Question: If that is the case, then explain as you see fit.
Answer: I shall explain. However, masters composing treatises often begin with auspicious words. Among all auspicious things, the Three Jewels are the most supreme. Therefore, to reveal even a small portion of the virtues of the Three Jewels, our original teacher placed this verse at the beginning of the treatise.
