Sutra on the Great Vehicle Bodhisattva Treasury of the Right Dharma, Volume 5
At that time, among the noble sages of Rajagriha city, there was a great yaksha named Abhaya. He had this thought: "To encounter the World-Honored One is extremely rare. Now I should offer supreme fine food to the World-Honored One." So the yaksha Abhaya offered to the World-Honored One a pure and excellent meal, complete with excellent appearance, aroma, taste, and texture.
At that time, the World-Honored One, out of compassion for the fearless night spirit, accepted the food offered. Once the Buddha finished eating, sixty-eight thousand night spirits immediately appeared in the sky, praising him: "Excellent! Excellent!" The sound of their rejoicing and praise spread throughout the celestial realm.
Then the fearless yaksha told the gathering of yakshas: "I have already offered the Tathagata pure and exquisite food. All of you should also offer pure food to the community of monks, for this will bring you benefit and happiness throughout the long night."
Then all the yakshas offered the finest food and drink to the monks. Out of compassion, the monks accepted their offerings. After the World-Honored One and the monks had eaten, they gradually proceeded toward the great city of Rajagriha. At that time, countless thousands of gods, countless thousands of dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans—as well as countless hundreds of thousands of millions of beings—all gathered around and followed the World-Honored One.
At that time, before the World-Honored One had yet entered the great city of Rajagriha, He first arrived at a vast open area. Once there, He arranged a sublime seat and took His place upon it. Then the fearless yaksha scattered heavenly mandarava flowers, utpala flowers, padma flowers, kumuda flowers, punnaga flowers, and divine sandalwood powder over the Buddha as an offering. He scattered them widely, thoroughly, and extensively. After making this offering, he stood before the Buddha with palms joined.
At that time, the World-Honored One, knowing that the yaksa named Fearless and all the other yaksas had purified their hearts, immediately emitted a magnificent and wondrous light. According to the natural way of things, when these Buddhas and World-Honored Ones emit light, it possesses countless colors and hues, streaming from the mouth: blue, yellow, red, white, crimson, purple, and emerald green. This light shines universally upon endless worlds, outshining the sun and moon so that their brilliance is no longer visible. Its radiance reaches down to the hells and up to the Brahma heavens. The light then turns back and circles the Buddha seven times to the right. After that, it either enters through the Buddha's crown, or his shoulder, or his knee.
By the natural order of things, if a Buddha or World-Honored One bestows a prophecy upon beings in the hells, the light enters through the soles of the feet. For animals, it enters through the back. For hungry ghosts, it enters through the front. For human beings, it enters through the left side. For heavenly beings, it enters through the right side. For disciples, it enters through the knees. For solitary realizers, it enters through the shoulders. When Buddhas and World-Honored Ones bestow the prophecy of supreme enlightenment on Bodhisattvas, the light enters through the crown of the head.
Then the Venerable Ananda, having witnessed the vast, pure light emitted by the World-Honored One, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and with palms pressed together, addressed the Buddha in verse:
World-Honored One, what is the cause today For this great light that shines everywhere, Illuminating all beings far and wide? What purpose lies behind this radiant display?
Who today will plant the seed of sainthood, Hearing of the Buddha's vast and enlightened path? Who will receive a prophecy right now? Who will abide in the fruit of liberation?
The greatly wise One’s light appears not without reason; It manifests to guide and tame those in need. This brilliant light brings clarity and awakening— O noble Sage, why does it shine forth now?
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke this verse:

At that time, the Great Mountain Yaksha thought to himself, "The World-Honored One is now going to Vulture Peak in the great city of Rajagriha. I should now plant some roots of goodness in the presence of the World-Honored One." He immediately spoke to the assembly of yakshas in his retinue, saying, "Venerable ones! You should know that the World-Honored One is about to go to Vulture Peak in Rajagriha. You should rouse your diligent and courageous minds, and each according to their ability, make offerings to the Buddha, the World-Honored One."
Then the great mountain yaksha spoke, and together with his own retinue, from the great city of Rajagriha to the Vulture Peak mountain, he cleared every path of stones, gravel, and sand, making them as pure and perfect as a polished mirror. He sprinkled pure fragrant water all around along the way, and spread fine cloth continuously along the path. Here and there he placed human-sized arrangements of exquisite flowers, and adorned the way with banners, canopies, jeweled umbrellas, and various other ornaments. He also set out precious jars filled with fragrant ointments and fine incense, and decorated everything with jeweled cords interwoven with flower garlands.
In the air, he sounded beautiful music. And along the entire length of an arrow's flight, he laid out blue lotuses, white lotuses, and red lotuses. Strange and wonderful birds sang in the pathways. Golden cords crisscrossed the area, and nets of seven treasures—along with nets of gold—were spread as a canopy overhead.
At that time, the great Yaksha spread a vast and splendid adornment along the path. He then transformed his own appearance, along with his entire assembly, and felt a joy and purity of body and mind. They gave rise to a joyful heart, an utterly kind heart, a gentle heart, a pure heart, an unobstructed heart, a blissful heart, a heart inclined toward the Buddha, a heart inclined toward the Dharma, a heart inclined toward the Sangha, a heart unshakeable in enlightenment, a fearless heart, an incomparable heart, a heart supreme over all three realms, a heart of compassion for all beings, a heart of loving-kindness, a heart of sympathetic joy, a heart of equanimity, a heart that becomes a vessel for all Buddha teachings, a truthful heart, a steadfast heart, an indestructible heart, a heart of ever-increasing excellence, a heart that abandons the realms of listeners and solitary awakeners, and a heart that accomplishes the Bodhisattva path. Having brought forth such pure minds, they came to the Buddha’s presence. Upon arrival, they bowed their heads at the Buddha’s feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, stood to one side, and with palms joined, spoke this verse to the Buddha:
"Now I make the finest offerings, The highest and most supreme, to the Buddha.
May I attain the sacred fruit of Buddhahood, And teach the highest, most subtle Dharma.
May I perfect the Ten Powers, And dwell joyfully in the Four Fearlessnesses, Bringing vast benefits to all beings, Just as the World-Honored One does.
May I possess the thirty-two excellent marks, And the eighty fine features as adornment, Shining as a great light in the world, Radiating like the World-Honored One.
May I turn the pure Dharma wheel, With its twelve forms, all supreme, Teaching the nectar of true Dharma, For the welfare of all beings.
May I manifest great spiritual powers and transformations, Just as the World-Honored One does, Bringing good to all beings everywhere, Even countless multitudes.
The World-Honored One appears with great light, Fearless like a great dragon king, Spreading the true path far and wide, Awakening beings to supreme enlightenment.
As a refuge and a shelter, A guide and a savior for all beings, May I become the same, Completing the work of benefiting all.
For all beings born in the five realms, May I become their master, Freeing them from all causes of suffering, Just as the World-Honored One has freed them.
I make offerings to the Honored One of Two Feet, Whose boundless majesty shines like light, Honored by gods, dragons, and asuras, Unequaled in all the world.
I perform the highest, most excellent deeds, May I become like the great Dharma Lord, With thirty-two perfect marks complete, Supreme in heaven and among humanity."
Then the World-Honored One spoke this verse to the Great Mountain Yaksha:
"As taught by the World-Honored One, the Buddha, Cultivate the cause of supreme, true Dharma. Sentient beings shall attain the excellent Dharma gate, And supreme enlightenment is not hard to reach.
The world's brightly shining great holy master, Having made offerings, received the Buddha's radiant light. Among all gods, dragons, spirits, and humans, He is worthy of all their offerings.
Having realized the supreme, great enlightenment, He sits beneath the tree of kings among the gathered assembly. He subdues the great evil armies of Mara, And widely proclaims the true Dharma for all beings."
At that time, the World-Honored One was surrounded with reverence by countless hundreds of thousands of celestial beings—gods, dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, non-humans, and countless other hundreds of thousands of kotis of nayutas of sentient beings. The Buddha, the World-Honored One, possessed great majesty and power. With abundant divine strength, He manifested great transformations, engaged in vast wonders, and radiated immense shining brilliance. He made the realms tremble, showers of giant lotus blossoms fell from the sky, hundreds of thousands of kinds of exquisite music played, and wondrous lotuses as large as carriage wheels appeared beneath His footsteps as He walked. The World-Honored One, following the ingeniously arranged path created by the great mountain yaksha, proceeded to Vulture Peak Mountain. Upon arrival, He said to the venerable Ananda, "Ananda, please prepare a special seat for the Buddha—a seat of Dharma, a supreme seat, a seat unrivaled in the three realms, a magnificent jeweled throne. Once the Tathagata is seated there, He will embrace all beings, proclaim and expound the profound and true Dharma of the Bodhisattva Treasury, complete all sublime practices of the Bodhisattvas, remove all doubts and questions of sentient beings, and illuminate them with correct wisdom, cutting through all nets of confusion. The Tathagata teaches this profound scripture to compassionately benefit and bring peace and joy to heavenly beings, humans, and all sentient beings in the world."
Then the Venerable Ananda, having received the Buddha’s instruction, prepared a splendid seat for the Tathagata. At that time, sixty-eight koṭis of celestial beings each offered a jeweled seat for the Buddha. After the Buddha took his seat upon it, they all spoke in unison before him, reciting a verse:
"I now prepare for the Buddha's use a sacred throne of honor and fine robes. May the Buddha, compassionate toward all beings, ascend this throne as is fitting. If the Tathāgata takes His seat and preaches the true Dharma leading to liberation, the six kinds of tremors will shake the world, and all beings will rejoice greatly. The Buddha's light illuminates the assembly, brightening the Buddha-realms and the King of Mountains. All see the Great Holy Buddha, awakening their pure desire for the Dharma. All beings, devas, dragons, and humans; all the eightfold classes of beings, can see each other's forms without any hindrance among them. All the innumerable hundreds of thousands of devas and humans see the Great Holy Buddha, who preaches the rare and wonderful Dharma."
Then King Bimbisara, along with his ministers, attendants, and family, came instantly to the Buddha's assembly, drawing near the Holy One to hear the Dharma. The Buddha, seeing the assembly was settled, surveyed all directions with wisdom. All the beings and devas gathered there—for their benefit, He acted universally. The World Honored One proclaimed to the assembly: "Those with doubts should ask the Two-Footed Honored One. Whatever you ask, I will explain clearly; removing all your doubts completely."
At that time, all beings throughout the great trichiliocosm—including humans, gods, and all those gathered in the assembly—looked up to the World-Honored One with profound reverence. They purified their minds, set aside all external distractions, and concentrated fully on the profound and true Dharma that the Tathagata was about to teach.
Then the World-Honored One said to the Venerable Mahamaudgalyayana, "Do not take your seat. Instead, observe this assembly of monks. Those who are yet to come to this gathering, go now to the south side of Snow Mountain, summon the great Kashyapa, and bring him to join this meeting."
At that time, the Venerable Mahamaudgalyayana received the Buddha's instruction and, wielding his spiritual power, went to the foot of the Snow Mountain where the Venerable Mahakashyapa was. Upon arriving, he said, "Venerable Sir, you should know that the Thus-Come One, the World-Honored One, is presently on Vulture Peak Mountain, gathering with ascetics, Brahmins, humans, celestial beings, and a great assembly to teach the Dharma. The Buddha has sent me to call on you. I earnestly hope you will follow the Buddha's command and come to the Dharma gathering—do not let there be the fault of hiding the Dharma."
At that time, the Venerable Mahakashyapa said to the Venerable Mahamaudgalyayana, "You should go ahead first; I will follow and come to where the Buddha is."
At that time, the venerable Mahakashyapa used his miraculous powers right where he was seated. Surrounded by the four assemblies, he arrived in an instant at Vulture Peak, where the World-Honored One was. Upon arrival, he bowed his head and touched the Buddha’s feet in homage, then sat down not far from the Buddha, off to one side.
Then the Venerable Mahamaudgalyayana, using his miraculous powers, swiftly arrived at the Buddha's location. There he saw the Venerable Mahakashyapa already present, seated to one side at the assembly. Seeing this, he said: "Venerable Mahakashyapa, your miraculous powers are truly complete—how quickly you arrived at the Buddha's assembly!"
