Five Thousand Five Hundred Buddhas' Names and Divine Mantras Sutra for Removing Obstacles and Eliminating Sins, Volume 1
Translated by the Tripitaka Master Jñānagupta of Northern India during the Great Sui Dynasty
This is what I heard:
At that time, the Bhagavan was dwelling on Vulture Peak in the great city of Rājagṛha, together with a great assembly of twelve hundred and fifty bhikkhus. There was also a great assembly of twelve thousand bodhisattva mahāsattvas, with Bodhisattva Maitreya at their head.
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the Bodhisattva Maitreya, saying: "Maitreya! To the east of this Buddha-land, beyond ten inexpressible numbers of Buddha-lands, as many as the grains of dust in hundreds of thousands of millions of worlds, past all these Buddha-lands, there is a Buddha-land named the World of the Lord of Liberation. Within that world, there is a Buddha named:
Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, Adorned with the Virtues of the Pure and Subtle as Space, with Eyes Like Fine Dust, Upright and Auspicious in Form, Radiant as a Red Lotus, with a Body of Lapis Lazuli Light, the Supreme Fragrance Offering Completed, Crowned with Infinite, Boundless Ornaments of Sun and Moon Light, Adorned by the Power of Vows, Adorned by Transformations, Born from the Dharma Realm, the Unobstructed King.
He presently abides, teaching the Dharma freely wherever his mind wishes to dwell.
If a virtuous man or virtuous woman has committed the four parajika offenses, and this person's transgression is so heavy that even if the entire Jambudvipa continent were ground into dust, with each speck of dust representing one kalpa, and this person had that many kalpas of sin—by merely reciting this Buddha's name once or making one bow of reverence, all that sin would be utterly eradicated. How much more so for one who upholds, recites, and remembers it without forgetting, day and night! The merit of such a person is inconceivable.
In that world, there is a Bodhisattva named the Unobstructed King, Without Equal. That Tathagata has bestowed a prediction upon this Bodhisattva, that he will attain Buddhahood, and be named:
Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, Well-Gone One, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Tamer of Men, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, World-Honored One, the King of Marks, with the Hair-Tuft Mark Radiant as Sun and Moon Flame, with a Jeweled Lotus Body Firm as a Vajra, the Unobstructed Eye of Vairocana, Perfectly Illuminating the Ten Directions, Universally Shining Upon All Buddha-Lands.
