The *Lüyuan Shigui* (Monastic Regulations of the Vinaya Garden), compiled by the Yuan dynasty monk Xingwu and reviewed by Siliang, is an important Vinaya (disciplinary) text in Buddhism. Composed during the revival of the Vinaya school in the Yuan dynasty, it systematically organizes the ritual protocols and regulations governing daily monastic activities and the cultivation practices of the monastic community. It covers various ceremonies and detailed aspects of monastic life, such as the Uposatha (fortnightly assembly), the Rain Retreat (Vassa), and the Pavāraṇā (invitation ceremony at the end of the retreat). Inheriting the traditions of the Tang dynasty Vinaya school and adapted to the needs of its time, this compilation provided an authoritative foundation for the standardized operation of Chinese Buddhist monasteries during and after the Yuan period. It is an indispensable document for the study of Yuan dynasty Buddhist institutional history and Vinaya practice, holding a prominent place in the transmission of Buddhist monastic discipline.

The Vinaya texts and essential guidelines for monastic discipline are the foundational pillars and protective walls of the Chan school. The esteemed Master Wugong of Siming, a true Dharma teacher, was deeply committed during the late Ming dynasty. Under the earnest guidance of the great Chan Master Huyan, he devoted twenty years of painstaking effort to complete two major works, organizing them into ten volumes totaling over one hundred thousand words. Though there have been those who continued his vision and carried forward his legacy, the cost of woodblock printing is considerable. We must rely on noble and wise beings—both lay and monastic bodhisattvas—to joyfully open their offerings and support this worthy cause together.

In the Three Jewels of Buddhism, there are the Sangha and the Dharma, just as rites and music serve as the guiding principles of a virtuous heart. They serve as standards and rules, allowing walking, standing, sitting, and lying down to be none other than the Great Path. Yet vast as the garden of compassion is, its flowers cannot spread far and wide. Baizhang gathered the scattered fragments, while the Second Patriarch composed commentaries—though these texts could not always be put into practice. Now, I grasp the essentials and unite with the core purpose. Let the idle flowers and wild grasses each stir in their own spring breeze; let the rain-soaked, dull clouds no longer obscure the mountain's pure clarity. Over one hundred thousand words—the more, the clearer. Twelve hundred followers—orderly and well-disciplined. A master of expedients will only then nod in approval; one skilled in the art of refinement will dare to set down the brush. When the practice is comprehensive and complete, the blessings will never be in vain.
