I live next to Kaiyuan Temple, where the ordination platform is so solemn and strict that no one passes by without a sense of awe. Whenever an ordination ceremony occurs, I make a point to observe it. I see the candidates sitting cross-legged on straw mats, their minds filled with reverence and caution, reciting scriptures of protection without ceasing. The celestial spirits seem to manifest their presence, causing some candidates to collapse on the platform, unable to complete the ceremony. Because of this, even the most determined and resilient individuals dare not be negligent. Ah, if people could always hold onto this state of mind, what so-called hell could there be? The monks "Understanding the Mind-Source" the Vinaya Master have established the ritual procedures for ascending the platform and demarcating the sacred boundary. They wish to widely share this teaching so that everyone may experience, just as when first receiving full ordination, that pure ocean of Dharma, no different from what the Great Teacher himself taught the assembly. Otherwise, the karmic consequences of breaking precepts and committing transgressions—who could fully describe them?
