Chapter on Kaundinya, Part Two
At that time, Subhadra heard the Buddha teach the profound and wonderful Dharma of the Great Parinirvana. He attained the Dharma-eye, saw the Dharma in its purity, cherished and protected the true Dharma, abandoned wrong views, and gained firm and steadfast faith in the Buddha's teaching. He then asked the Tathagata to let him go forth from home into homelessness. The Buddha said, "Excellent, excellent, Subhadra! Come, monk — you gladden the noble heart and enter well into the Buddha's path." Then Subhadra was overjoyed, leaping with delight and filled with boundless rejoicing. Instantly his hair and beard fell away on their own, and he became a monk. The water of wisdom of the Dharma-nature poured into the source of his mind. He was no longer bound or attached; his defilements were exhausted, his mind was liberated, and he attained the fruit of Arhatship.
Having realized the fruit of enlightenment, Subhadra approached the Buddha, gazed up at his revered face, bowed his head to the ground at the Buddha's feet, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and with palms joined in reverence, overcome with mingled sorrow and joy, deeply repented and blamed himself for his former transgressions. He said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! I grieve that this poisonous body of mine has for countless eons endlessly deceived and deluded me, causing me to drown long in ignorance and wrong views, to sink into the three realms and the teachings of outer paths. How painful! How bitter! The harm has been ever-growing. Now I rejoice greatly, for by the Tathagata's grace I have entered the true Dharma. World-Honored One, your wisdom is like a great ocean, your compassion boundless. I privately reflect that even if I were to crush this body for countless eons, I could not repay this brief moment's kindness." Having spoken these words, Subhadra wept and shed tears, unable to compose himself, and again said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! I am old and advanced in years, with little life remaining. I have not yet escaped the mass of sufferings, and the suffering of aging presses upon me. I only beg the World-Honored One to remain a while longer, to teach and admonish, to have compassion and come to our rescue. Do not enter Parinirvana." At that time the World-Honored One remained silent, giving no consent.
Subhadra's request was not granted. Overwhelmed with sorrow and anguish, he cried out loudly: "How terrible! How terrible! The world is empty, the world is empty. How is it that now great fear is suddenly upon us, and burning distress spreads everywhere? Alas! Alas! The blessings of sentient beings are exhausted, and the eye of true wisdom is being extinguished."
He wept again, wailing and choking with sobs. Blood appeared all over his body. Crying out loud, he threw himself to the ground before the Tathagata, his mind confused and agitated, and he fainted away. After a long while he revived, and with tears and choking sobs he said to the Buddha: "World Honored One, I cannot bear to watch the Tathagata enter Parinirvana. My heart is pierced with such pain that I cannot restrain it. How could I possibly go on living with this rotten vessel, this poisonous body? Let me rather extinguish myself first, and only afterward may the World Honored One enter Nirvana."
When Subhadra had spoken these words, choking with grief and longing, he entered Nirvana on the spot.
At that time, countless billions of great bodhisattvas, monks, and nuns beyond all reckoning—as numerous as the sands of the Ganges—together with all heavenly beings, humans, and asuras in the world, cried out with one voice:
"How terrible! How terrible! How could the Fully Awakened One abandon us in a single moment, leaving us with no protector, no refuge, no shelter, no path to follow?"
Grieving and longing for him, overwhelmed with sorrow, they wept and wailed. Grasping one another's hands and beating their chests, they fainted away, losing all sense of direction. Their mourning shook the entire three-thousand great thousandfold world.
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke in eight kinds of voices, announcing to the great assembly: "Do not wail and cry like infants. Each of you must restrain yourselves and not let your minds fall into confusion. You are here traversing the vast ocean of suffering and birth-and-death. Diligently cultivate a pure mind, do not lose mindfulness and wisdom, quickly seek right understanding, and swiftly escape all forms of existence. Within the three realms, receiving a body means the wheel of suffering has no end. The lord of ignorance and the demon king of craving and affection drive and enslave body and mind, making them servants, roaming everywhere through sense objects and creating karma of birth-and-death. Greed, anger, and deluded madness wound us moment by moment. For countless eons we have constantly endured suffering and affliction. How could anyone with wisdom not turn back to this source? You should know that for vast eons I have already entered great stillness, free of aggregates, elements, and sense fields, forever cutting off all forms of existence — the diamond treasure store of eternal bliss, true self, and purity. Now I display here inconceivable skillful means, entering great Nirvana, appearing to follow the ways of the world, wishing to let beings know that the body is like lightning, so that they give rise to a mind of longing and devotion. The rushing river of birth-and-death drifts and speeds swiftly; all formations turn like a wheel — this is simply the way things are. The Tathagata's Nirvana is profound! Profound! Inconceivable! It is the realm of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, not something that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas can know."
The Buddha again told the great assembly: "This Subhadra has already made offerings to Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges and has deeply planted roots of goodness in the presence of those Buddhas. Through the power of his original vow, he has always remained within the teachings of the Nirgrantha ascetics, going forth and practicing, using skillful wisdom to guide and draw in beings who hold wrong views and have lost the path, leading them into right understanding. By the power of his original vow, Subhadra has now met me, and at the time of my final nirvana, he has heard the true Dharma. Having heard the true Dharma, he attained the fruit of arhatship. Having attained that fruit, he then entered nirvana. From the time I attained the Way and first guided Ajñata Kaundinya, to this final nirvana when I guide Subhadra, my work is complete, and there is nothing more to do. Even if I were to remain longer, it would be no different from now."
At that time, after the World-Honored One had spoken these words, he breathed a long sigh and proclaimed: "Excellent, excellent! Subhadra has repaid the Buddha's kindness. You in the great assembly should make offerings to his remains and establish a stupa."
