> Chapter 28: Explaining the Samadhi of the Principal Deity

> Then the Vajra-wielding Lord of Secrets said to the Buddha: “World-Honored One, please explain the forms and visible signs of the honored ones, so that Bodhisattvas practicing the mantra path, by contemplating the original forms of their chosen deities, may take those deities’ bodies as their own, attain enlightenment without doubt, and gain mastery.” Having spoken thus, the Buddha said to the Vajra-wielding Lord of Secrets: “Excellent, excellent, Lord of Secrets! You ask me about this meaning. Excellent! Listen well, and pay close attention. I will now explain.” The Vajra-wielding Lord replied: “Yes, World-Honored One, I gladly wish to hear.” The Buddha said: “Lord of Secrets! The honored ones have three kinds of bodies: syllables, seals, and images. Syllables have two aspects: sound and the awakened mind. Seals have two aspects: form and formlessness. The bodies of the honored ones also have two aspects: pure and impure. The pure body, realized through awakening, is free from all characteristics. The impure body, which still contains imagination, manifests shape, color, and various appearances. These two kinds of honored bodies accomplish two kinds of endeavors: With imagination, one achieves realization with form; without imagination, one naturally attains realization without form.” Then he spoke this verse:

> The Buddha teaches: Because thoughts arise, Desires take shape and cling to forms. By dwelling free from thoughts, One attains the formless supreme attainment. Therefore, in all respects, Abide in that which is beyond thought.
