Chapter 5: Eight Radiances
The World-Honored One further stated to Bodhisattva Zonghao Wang: "Bodhisattvas possess eight kinds of radiance. With these radiances, they transcend all inconceivable darkness and cultivate pure conduct. What are these eight? First, the radiance of mindfulness; second, the radiance of resolve; third, the radiance of moving freely; fourth, the radiance of the Dharma; fifth, the radiance of wisdom; sixth, the radiance of sincerity; seventh, the radiance of spiritual powers; eighth, the radiance of putting teachings into practice. These are the eight great radiances of a Bodhisattva."
Regarding the "Light of Mindfulness": What is the Light of Mindfulness? There are eight aspects to it. What are these eight?
1. Not forgetting the roots of goodness cultivated in the past. 2. Accumulating merit daily by building on goodness yet to be established. 3. Never forgetting the teachings you have heard, grasping their meaning and understanding where they lead. 4. Without depending on the six elements, you complete the gate of mindfulness. 5. Cutting off unwholesome actions while fully developing virtuous qualities. 6. Seeing the power of determination, which is established by the Buddhas and World-Honored Ones. 7. Protecting the Dharma realm with a mind grounded in its source. 8. Attaining the light of wisdom in all things.
These are the eight aspects of the Bodhisattva's Light of Mindfulness.
What is sought is clarity, and there are eight aspects to it. What are the eight? - Seek understanding of meaning, not adornment; - Seek wisdom, not clinging to perceptions; - Seek the truth, not worldly desires; - Seek diligence, not conflict; - Seek the Buddha's path, not the ways of voice-hearers or solitary realizers; - Seek what is sublime, not the lesser vehicle; - Seek Buddhahood, not worldly temptations; - Seek great compassion and great empathy, never harboring harm toward any living being.
These are the eight aspects of clarity in what is sought.
"Traveling in Light also includes eight aspects. What are these eight? Wherever you travel, you constantly proclaim the teachings; you travel knowing the intentions and thoughts of all beings; wherever you travel, you discern wisdom clearly; wherever you travel, you always understand the profound twelve links of dependent origination; wherever you travel, what you express extends without obstruction; wherever you travel, you comprehend purity and the gains and losses of past and future; wherever you travel, you are fully equipped with all the teachings of the Buddhas. These are the eight."
"The Dharma's radiant light has eight aspects. What are these eight? Its light illuminates the world, explaining how to enter into wholesome roots; it also teaches sentient beings the way to transcend the world, revealing noble wisdom; it instructs them to remove the causes of wrongdoing; the light of the unconditioned teachings skillfully proclaims the path; it does not abide in ignorance or in the various defilements, seeing the destinations of good and evil in birth and death; having observed this, the light of desirelessness does not fall into cessation and attain realization prematurely; its radiant light skillfully examines the origins of defilements and adventitious dust; the light of unconditioned peace sees the mind as originally pure, naturally pristine, with all phenomena forever still. These are the eight aspects."
The radiant light of wisdom has eight aspects. What are these eight? First, the light of the eightfold path; second, the light of insight along the path; third, the light that shines on those who come and go; fourth, the light that illuminates those who never return; fifth, the light that radiates without attachment; sixth, the brilliance of solitary awakeners; seventh, the wisdom light of bodhisattvas; eighth, the light of the Thus-Come One, the True One, the Fully Awakened One. These are the eight.
"Utter sincerity brings forth radiant illumination through eight aspects. What are these eight? One who falls into cessation yet shines upon it through sincere practice; one whose sincere and truthful conduct attains the first stage of the path, illuminating it with wisdom; one whose sincere and truthful conduct reaches the second fruition, shining upon it; one whose sincere and truthful conduct achieves the third fruition, also illuminating it; one whose sincere and truthful conduct attains the fourth fruition, likewise shining upon it; one whose sincere and truthful conduct reaches the fruit of the Solitary Realizer, illuminating it; one whose sincere and truthful conduct attains the patience of a Bodhisattva, shining upon it; one whose sincere and truthful conduct accomplishes Buddhahood and supreme enlightenment, also illuminating it. These are the eight."
"Spiritual powers and radiant light also have eight aspects. What are these eight? They are: light that shines everywhere without obstruction; the heavenly eye that perceives all forms; the complete silence of all sounds, yet the heavenly ear hears all voices; the light of mindfulness that recalls countless eons of past deeds; the fundamentally pure light that sees into the minds of all beings as clearly as open space; the unobstructed light of spiritual feet that travels freely through countless Buddha lands; the light of wisdom that accomplishes the holy state free of defilements; and the light of accumulated merit that guides beings toward wholesome actions; and the light of wisdom's deeds that resolves all doubts and confusions of beings. These are the eight aspects."
Practicing the light also involves eight matters. They are: First, cultivating sacred wisdom. Second, aspiring to the clarity of wisdom. Third, practicing right views with clear insight. Fourth, upholding the light of contemplation. Fifth, illuminating the nature of all beings. Sixth, cultivating a liberated mind. Seventh, maintaining a mind free from anger. Eighth, pursuing this clarity until it reaches its ultimate end. These are the eight.

With past pure deeds, the mind does not forget them. Intentions are cultivated without attachment, and wholesome advice is given without laziness. What is heard is never forgotten; understanding of the teaching's meaning is quickly gained. In stillness and tranquility, the mind finds peace; with strong resolve, one abandons what is wrong. The mind clearly understands the gateway of mindfulness and discerns the karma being created. Those who are courageous see this and establish supreme self-mastery. They guard the city of the Dharma, treating all beings equally. The wise leave all darkness behind, benefiting the countless beings. They attain radiant light, and all doubt and hesitation vanish. With strong resolve and insightful wisdom, they swiftly reach Buddhahood. Their mind is fixed on meaning, not on outward adornment. The wise are free from clinging thoughts and do not rely on mere words. Those whose minds are set on the Dharma skillfully tame desire and are free from delusion. With resolve and pure skilful means, they abide in the path without dispute. Their mind constantly abides in the path, never thinking of Hearers or Solitary Buddhas. They always nurture the sublime karma, never thinking of the Lesser Vehicle. They contemplate the Buddha's path and do not follow the teachings of Mara. They always harbor great compassion and never harm sentient beings. Wherever they teach and travel, there is no hesitation. They adapt their teachings to guide beings, according to their needs and actions. Wherever they go, their wisdom discriminates without hindrance. They understand the law of interdependent causation and see that there is ultimately no self-existing arising. They comprehend the wisdom of skilful means, and their attainment is firmly established. They can fully enter all the teachings that the Buddhas have revealed. They are the light of the world, knowing thoroughly the karma of all beings. With the sacred wisdom of transcendence, they are the light of wisdom for the brave. No fault arises from their birth; their great wisdom cultivates original purity. They skilfully follow the path and always teach actions that are free from blame. They are neither with nor without mental outflows; Dharma-light shines brilliantly. They cut off all outflows, bringing benefit to all beings. Whether things are counted or uncounted, their wisdom always flows freely. They are without defilement and free from darkness; they enter the practice of cessation. No defilements or disputes can obstruct their wisdom. They clearly recognize worldly desires, but their mind is fundamentally pure. Their wisdom attains liberation, realizing the arising of non-arising, the stillness of extinction. Such is the infinite, great-vehicle work of radiant wisdom. They thoroughly understand the eight kinds of wisdom and realize the stages of the path. They understand the states of the Once-Returner and the Non-Returner. From the Arhats and Solitary Buddhas to the Bodhisattvas and the World’s Protector, the Lion’s Roar, their wisdom can fully comprehend all, and they travel through the understanding of the noble ones. Their truthfulness and radiance are immeasurable; with bravery they practise well. Attaining the fruits of the path, they are free from anger and their excellence is supreme. Those whose practice is truthful enter the first fruit of stillness; the second, third, and fourth fruits and the fruit of the Solitary Buddha. If one can diligently strive and attain the patience of the Dharma's equality, they will illuminate all these attainments, just like the Supreme Victor who has attained the path. With the divine eye, they see all the Buddhas of the ten directions. With the perfected divine ear, they hear all sounds of the ten directions. They recollect countless eons, their wisdom-light shining on past lives. They know the minds of others accordingly, their pure wisdom illuminating all. They travel billions of Buddha-lands, their psychic powers illuminating the ten directions. They move lightly like space, attaining the wisdom of the unconditioned. Their merit and light are boundless; their spiritual powers benefit beings. Their wisdom realm is without hindrance; they resolve the doubts of all beings. They practise what is meaningful, their resolve strong and their Dharma-light shining. Until they attain infinite radiance, this is the light of transcendental powers. Practising noble wisdom, their mind is vast and their eloquence unending. They see clearly with Right View, and in the end, there is no resentment. Their purity in these eight aspects makes this radiance's might immeasurable. Even before they have become Buddhas, they constantly perform the deeds of a Buddha.
