No. 1024-A引
Introduction
Tiantai and Huayan, each teaching the Dharma as appropriate. Those who expound Tiantai or Huayan teachings do not realize this themselves. Later generations, once thoughts arise, immediately create a division, splitting them into two separate schools. To overly emphasize Tiantai is to lose Tiantai; to overly emphasize Huayan is to lose Huayan. Clinging to forms and rigidly adhering to names, drawing boundaries and raising banners—this is a grave flaw of the Dharma's decline. Those of broad understanding should not discriminate or favor one over the other.
The Huayan school lacked a comprehensive classification of the five teachings. Master Baoting compiled and supplemented it. Using poison to counteract poison, using a wedge to remove a wedge, he relied on ink and paper to apply impartiality. Do not impose judgments on what is right or wrong. He was not merely a benefactor to the Huayan school alone.
The "Tigers of Doctrine" in the southeast have glimpsed but a fraction of this. As for those who take sides between the two schools, it would be best for them not to even glance at this.
