### 交法師授辭

> Master Jiao's Instructions

吾祖智者垂言立行。談出情表。非暗證及尋名者之所追及也。吾忝嗣洪業。綿歷多稔。未甞少須有行說之懈。汝登吾之門亦有日矣。諮決微旨。厥功已積。今台之章安慧因古寺欽汝懿美。乃新搆于講院。令汝傳持。吾今授汝香爐如意。用為傳法之具。欲汝三學芳香先藹乎自己。四悉巧意次適乎物宜。汝其慎諸。勿妄揮秉。忽名利之如芥。視強軟之若寇能如是者。少合吾之意爾。亦不辜吾祖之言行。亦免致有情之生惱。擇交論師勿欺吾囑。天聖二年正月二日。四明座主華押辭。

> My ancestor, the Wise Master, left behind teachings and established a way of conduct that transcends mere words and appearances. Those who seek only secret insight or cling to verbal labels can never grasp his true meaning. I have been unworthy to carry on this great legacy for many years, yet have never dared to slacken in upholding and transmitting his words and practices. You have long been a student at my gate, accumulating merit by seeking clarification on subtle principles. Now, the ancient monastery of Zhang'an Huiyin on Mount Tiantai, recognizing your excellent virtue, has newly built a lecture hall and entrusted you to spread and uphold these teachings. I now present you with this incense burner and \*ruyi\* scepter as symbols of transmitting the Dharma. My hope is that you will cultivate the “Three Learnings” (morality, concentration, wisdom) so that their fragrance first suffuses your own being, and then skillfully employ the “Four Means of Guidance” to respond appropriately to all beings. Be careful in this—do not act rashly or arrogantly. Regard fame and fortune as meaningless as a blade of grass; view both the aggressive and the weak with the same caution you would an enemy. Only if you can do this will you somewhat meet my expectations, not tarnish the words and deeds of my ancestor, and avoid causing sentient beings trouble.
