The Commentary on the Vajrasamadhi Sutra was authored by the eminent Ming Dynasty monk Yuancheng. Yuancheng was a key figure in the Caodong lineage during the late Ming period. His commentary integrates his personal insights from meditation with doctrinal explanations. This annotation provides a systematic interpretation of the Vajrasamadhi Sutra, a text often regarded as controversial or of disputed authenticity. It delves deeply into core principles such as the original source of the One Mind and the samadhi of Suchness, while also incorporating Chan (Zen) teachings on mind and nature. This commentary not only serves as a crucial document for studying this contentious scripture but also reflects the trend of integrating Chan practice and doctrinal study in late Ming Buddhism. It holds a unique place within the traditions of Buddhist doctrinal studies and Chan commentaries, making it an important reference for understanding later Chinese Buddhist thought.
